Campgrounds near Pen Argyl
Pen Argyl sits in Northampton County's Slate Belt, at the foot of Blue Mountain in eastern Pennsylvania. The borough lies along the southern edge of the Pocono Mountains and just north of the Lehigh Valley, putting a mix of private RV parks, wooded family campgrounds, and Pennsylvania state park land within roughly an hour's drive. The Appalachian Trail crosses Blue Mountain minutes away at Wind Gap, and PA Route 33 provides a direct north-south connector to Interstate 80 and the Delaware Water Gap.
Private campgrounds closest to town include Camp Charles Campgrounds and Silver Valley Campsites in the immediate Slate Belt area, with Pocono Vacation Park, Hickory Lake Campground, and Evergreen Lake Campground extending into the surrounding Pocono foothills. These properties typically offer a mix of RV sites with hookups, tent sites, and seasonal amenities such as pools, camp stores, and family activities.
For day trips from any of these basecamps, Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center, Beltzville State Park, Hickory Run State Park, and Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area are all reachable on short drives.
Things to do near Pen Argyl
Hiking is the headline activity. The Appalachian Trail crosses Blue Mountain at Wind Gap, minutes from Pen Argyl, on a stretch locals nickname Rocksylvania for its rugged footing. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are recommended on this section of the AT. Nearby, Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center protects the only remaining old-growth forest in the Lehigh Valley, with roughly 18.5 miles of trails open to hiking, fishing, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and hunting.
Water-based options widen further north. Beltzville State Park has a 525-foot sand beach and a 949-acre lake popular with boaters and anglers, and Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area offers paddling on the Delaware River. Ski areas at Blue Mountain, Camelback, and Jack Frost Big Boulder are all reachable for winter travelers.
Families staying at Pocono Vacation Park, Hickory Lake Campground, or Evergreen Lake Campground can often combine on-site pools and stocked ponds with day trips to Bushkill Falls or Jim Thorpe.

The Pen Argyl area shares Allentown's humid continental climate, with July as the warmest month and January as the coldest. Summer is peak camping season. Days are warm and humid, thunderstorms are common, and family campgrounds run at full capacity from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekends around Independence Day and Labor Day book out earliest.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for cooler temperatures and thinner crowds. Spring brings mud, rain, and the wildflower bloom Jacobsburg is known for. Fall foliage peaks in mid to late October across the Pocono foothills, drawing weekend traffic to state parks and the AT ridge.
Winter is quiet. Many private campgrounds in the Slate Belt and Poconos close or run limited services from late October through April, while Pennsylvania state parks like Promised Land stay open year round with reduced facilities. Snow, ice, and freezing rain are all part of the winter mix, so RV travelers should confirm road access and hookup availability before booking.

Great weekend getaway!
Kami A. - Nov 2024
Great vehicle and friendly owners. This compact camper has a lot of creature comforts while allowing one to maneuver and park in regular parking lots. The van is really easy to drive and handles really nice. The beds were comfortable and IMO accommodate 2 adults (top bed) and 1 adult or 2 kids in the lower bed. We were able to use the bike rack, too, and that worked great for a road bike and mountain bike (I think 2 mountain bikes might not fit unless the handle bars were turned on 1 of them). We didn't use the, generator, heater, hot water, shower, sink, microwave or toilet so I can't comment on them but I wish we rented it longer so we could've taken advantage of all this van has to offer. We would absolutely rent again.

Great holiday weekend in Dalton's camper! He was an amazing host, and everything was as described. We had the camper delivered and picked up by Mike, who was also awesome! Thanks for a great weekend!
Stephanie H. - Sep 2026
Dalton's Jayco is the perfect option for a small family. There's plenty of sleeping options for the kids, and the tub is a great bonus for bath time. The camper is well maintained and everything was functional. Delivery and pick up to the site went smoothly. We're hoping it's available next year too!

How to book a site
Private campgrounds around Pen Argyl, including Camp Charles Campgrounds, Pocono Vacation Park, Hickory Lake Campground, Silver Valley Campsites, and Evergreen Lake Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and fall-foliage weekends fill first, so booking two to three months ahead is common for July, August, and October stays.
For Pennsylvania state parks in the region, reservations run through the state's ReserveAmerica-powered system. Pennsylvania opens campsite reservations 11 months in advance at noon Eastern Time, an unusual midday release. Campers may stay up to 14 consecutive nights from Memorial Day to Labor Day and up to 21 consecutive nights the rest of the year, with a 48-hour gap required between reservations. Bookings can also be made by phone at 888-PA-PARKS.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Pen Argyl is rolling, wooded, and rocky. The Slate Belt sits on shale and slate bedrock, so tent stakes bend and sites tend to be gravel or grass rather than soft soil. Blue Mountain and the surrounding ridges keep cell service spotty in some campground pockets, particularly on the north side of the ridge.
RV access is generally straightforward. PA Route 33 and US Route 22 handle large rigs, and most private campgrounds in the area accommodate travel trailers and Class A motorhomes, though back-in-only sites and low tree canopies are common at older properties. Confirm site length and hookup type when booking.
Bears, ticks, and mosquitoes are all present. Store food in a hard-sided vehicle or bear box, use repellent from spring through early fall, and check for ticks after any hike on the AT or in Jacobsburg's forested trails.

No special endorsement or commercial driver's license is required for motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, or fifth wheels on RVezy. Approved renters are generally 25 years or older, and you'll verify your ID through the RVezy platform during checkout in just a few minutes. Visiting from outside North America? Yes, every RVezy booking in Pen Argyl includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the trip rather than the what-ifs. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your rental, and you choose your coverage level during checkout based on how much peace of mind you want. If you nick a mirror on a tight Slate Belt back road or get a flat heading up Route 33, you've got real support behind you. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers before you book so you can match protection to the kind of motorhome rental in Pen Argyl you're planning, whether it's a compact campervan or a 30-foot Class C.

You're not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can change plans without penalty. After that, refunds depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels, you'll receive a refund or credit. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later for your Pen Argyl RV trip. You'll lock in the best rigs near the Slate Belt and still have flexibility under RVezy's cancellation terms.

Some hosts charge a small pet fee or cleaning add-on, which will be shown right on the listing. Once you arrive, your pup will love nearby Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center with its Bushkill Creek trails and the grassy paths at Minsi Lake. Pro tip: message the host directly through the listing before booking to confirm pet policies and to ask about their favorite local dog-friendly trails.

Many local hosts will drive the rig straight to your campsite at places like Driftstone on the Delaware, Mountain Vista Campground in East Stroudsburg, or KOA Delaware Water Gap, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location, and you'll see the exact cost on the listing. Pro tip: delivery is a smart move if you're flying into Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE), about 30 minutes away, and want to skip towing entirely.

weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Pen Argyl?
You'll do great, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Pen Argyl sits on quiet two-lane roads in the Slate Belt with easy access to wide-shouldered Route 33 and Interstate 80, so you can get comfortable before tackling anything narrow. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through propane, slide-outs, leveling, hookups, and the dump valve. You can also text or call them throughout your trip with questions. Pro tip: if confidence is the main concern, pick a smaller Class B campervan rental in Pen Argyl or a 24-foot Class C, and ask the host to demonstrate backing into a campsite during your walkthrough.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat if I break down during my Pen Argyl RV trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 611, a dead battery at Hickory Run, or a tow off the Pennsylvania Turnpike is one phone call away from being handled. You can also reach RVezy's support team before, during, and after the trip if anything else comes up. Your host is typically just a text away too, which is handy for quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: snap photos of all the gauges and the propane tank during your walkthrough so roadside techs can troubleshoot faster if you ever need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Pen Argyl RV rental into New York, New Jersey, or Canada?
Yes, multi-state RV trips are common from Pen Argyl since you're only minutes from the New Jersey border at the Delaware Water Gap and within easy reach of New York's Catskills and Finger Lakes. Most RVezy hosts allow interstate travel, and many also permit cross-border trips into Canada, though insurance and host approval need to be confirmed on the listing before you book. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: message the host to confirm your route, especially if you're planning a loop through Watkins Glen, the Adirondacks, or Niagara Falls. Popular runs from here include the Jersey Shore (90 miles) and the Catskills (75 miles).
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Pen Argyl RV trip?
Fuel is easy to plan for around here. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 mpg, Class A coaches 6 to 8 mpg, campervans 15 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg towing). Pennsylvania gas prices have recently averaged around $3.30 to $3.70 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. For a typical 4-night loop from Pen Argyl through the Delaware Water Gap and Jim Thorpe (about 250 miles), budget $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up before crossing into New Jersey, where gas is often pricier, and use the Wawa and Sheetz stations on Route 33 that have RV-friendly pump access.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Pen Argyl?
Booking ahead is the move, and it's easier than you think. Pennsylvania state parks like Hickory Run, Promised Land, and Tobyhanna take reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. For summer weekends and any October foliage date, lock sites in by March or April. Private parks like Driftstone, Mountain Vista, and KOA Delaware Water Gap usually open online bookings 12 months out. Midweek summer stays can often be grabbed just a week ahead. Pro tip: if state parks are full, look at Northampton County parks. They're a quick drive from your Pen Argyl RV rental and often have last-minute openings.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Pen Argyl?
Driving an RV around Pen Argyl is refreshingly straightforward. The town sits on rolling Slate Belt terrain with well-maintained state roads. Route 33 and Interstate 80 handle big rigs easily, and Route 512 gives you a scenic option toward Bangor and the Delaware. Watch for two things: low-hanging trees on older borough streets in town (stick to the main thoroughfares with a tall rig) and winter ice from November through March, when PennDOT plows but mountain shoulders can stay slick. Pro tip: avoid the narrow climb on Route 191 through Stroudsburg in a 30-plus-foot motorhome. Take Route 33 north to I-80 instead. It adds 10 minutes and saves your nerves.
511pa.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Pen Argyl offer?
You'll find full-service infrastructure at most parks in the area. Driftstone on the Delaware, Mountain Vista Campground, and KOA Delaware Water Gap all offer 30/50-amp electric, potable water hookups, sewer or on-site dump stations, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi (variable strength). Pennsylvania state parks like Hickory Run have electric sites plus a central dump station and water fill, though full hookups are rare. Propane refills are easy at the AmeriGas in Wind Gap and Tractor Supply in Bangor. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground, since dispersed sites in nearby state forests are gorgeous but dry. Knowing where to park an RV in Pen Argyl's surrounding parks makes the trip smoother.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Pen Argyl?
You'll be impressed at how turn-key most rigs are. A typical RV rental in Pen Argyl comes with a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, pots, pans, dishes), a private bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on layout, climate control with furnace and roof AC, dinette and lounge seating with seatbelts for travel, and often a TV. Many hosts also include a generator for boondocking, outdoor chairs, a propane grill, linens, and basic kitchen starter kits. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list for Wi-Fi hotspots and solar, which are clutch if you're heading into the Delaware State Forest where cell service drops fast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pen%20Argyl%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect with my RV rental?
You've got plenty of flexibility. Mileage policies vary: some offer 100 miles per night included with a per-mile rate after that, while others offer unlimited mileage, great for a longer Pen Argyl RV trip. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator package if you're boondocking at Delaware State Forest, then return the rig clean and full of fuel to avoid extra fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pen%20Argyl%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You'll pay for your Pen Argyl RV rental through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card. Never pay hosts directly, since all bookings need to go through RVezy to keep your protection plan and roadside assistance active. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup and released after the trip if everything checks out. Pro tip: do a full walkthrough video with the host at pickup and again at drop-off, focusing on tires, awning, slides, and the interior. It's the single best way to keep your deposit return smooth and dispute-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a Pen Argyl RV trip good for families?
It's one of the best family RV trip Pen Argyl options in the Northeast. Within an hour you can hit Crayola Experience in Easton, Dorney Park in Allentown, Lost River Caverns in Hellertown, the Lehigh Valley Zoo, and Bushkill Falls (the 'Niagara of Pennsylvania'). Closer to home, Weona Park has a vintage carousel that kids love, and Minsi Lake is great for fishing and paddleboarding. Family-sized Class C and bunkhouse travel trailers on RVezy sleep 6 to 8 comfortably, often with bunk beds the kids will fight over (in a good way). Pro tip: book a campground with a pool, like Mountain Vista or KOA Delaware Water Gap, so post-adventure afternoons stay easy.
