Campgrounds near Pen Mar
Pen Mar sits along the Mason-Dixon Line in southern Franklin County, Pennsylvania, on South Mountain and steps from the Appalachian Trail. Caledonia State Park is in Adams and Franklin counties, midway between Chambersburg and Gettysburg along the Lincoln Highway, US 30, and the park is nestled within South Mountain, the northern terminus of the well-known Blue Ridge Mountain. The location gives RV travelers access to two state park systems and one national park unit within a short drive.
Inside Pennsylvania, Chinquapin Hill at Caledonia State Park is the closest state-park option. Just south across the Maryland line, Cunningham Falls State Park sits in the Catoctin Mountains and is divided into two separate but unique areas: the William Houck Area off Route 77 with a 78-foot cascading waterfall, a 43 acre lake and camping, and the Manor Area off Route 15 with the Scales and Tales Aviary, the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace and a camping area.
Adjacent to Cunningham Falls, Owens Creek Campground operates inside Catoctin Mountain Park, a National Park Service unit. For RVers who want resort amenities and quick access to Gettysburg, Granite Hill Campground on Fairfield Road rounds out the options.
Things to do near Pen Mar
The Appalachian Trail crosses Pen Mar Park and threads south into Maryland. The Appalachian Trail crosses through Caledonia State Park, connecting to various hiking trails with different difficulty levels. Waterfalls are the other main draw: Cunningham Falls is where Hunting Creek cascades 78 feet down a face of bare rock, catching on several ledges before collecting in a shallow pool at its base, the tallest waterfall in Maryland.
Families can swim at Hunting Creek Lake in the Houck Area, tour the Catoctin Iron Furnace at the Manor Area, or drive to Gettysburg National Military Park. Caledonia positions visitors within 20 minutes of Gettysburg for Civil War history exploration. Catoctin Mountain Park boasts 25 miles of trails, and the Deerfield Nature Trail connects directly to the campground as a 1.5 mile loop with a connection to the park's western system of trails.

Camping seasons vary by park. Owens Creek Campground at Catoctin Mountain Park is typically open from late April until October 31st. The William Houck Area Campground opens at the beginning of April and closes at the end of October annually. Primitive camping at the Manor Area Campground is available Nov. 1 through March 31, when the bathhouse is closed for the winter but a portable toilet is available.
At Caledonia State Park, the Chinquapin Hill campground runs from mid-April through late October. Granite Hill also operates a spring-to-late-fall season. Late spring brings wildflowers and the wettest weather of the year; summer weekends draw heavy demand for the Houck lake beach and Gettysburg-area sites.
Fall foliage peaks in mid to late October across South Mountain and the Catoctins, making the shoulder season a strong pick for cooler nights and thinner crowds. Black bears live in the Catoctins, so keep food and garbage secure at camp and in day-use areas.

How to book campgrounds near Pen Mar
Each park uses its own system. Reservations are required to camp at Owens Creek Campground, walk-ups are no longer accepted, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777. Cunningham Falls State Park has campsites in both the William Houck Area and the Manor Area; make a reservation online or by calling 1-888-432-CAMP, and both campgrounds often fill weeks or months in advance.
Caledonia State Park bookings go through the Pennsylvania state park reservation system. Reservations can be made for today and up to 11 months in advance. Granite Hill Campground takes reservations directly through its own website or by phone.
Book peak summer weekends and any date near a Gettysburg event as early as the window opens. Camper cabins at Houck and full-hookup sites at Chinquapin Hill are the first to sell out.
What to expect
Expect wooded, mountainous sites with variable levelness. Gravel pads stay level across the Houck campground, though some upper loop sites overlook lower areas, ground cover between sites varies with less privacy during spring months when leaves have not emerged yet, and poison ivy grows throughout the area. Owens Creek has no hookups, and maximum trailer length is 22 feet with maximum RV length of 30 feet.
Hookups improve at the Pennsylvania and private sites. Chinquapin Hill has non-electric sites, electric sites, and 18 full-hookup sites, while Hosack Run has non-electric sites, electric sites, and 17 full-hookup sites. Pets are prohibited in Chinquapin Hill, and all sites in Hosack Run are pet friendly.
Mobile phone coverage is often lost once near or inside the park, so plan accordingly and download maps before arrival.

Once you arrive, leashed dogs are welcome at Pen Mar County Park, on the nearby Appalachian Trail sections, and in Caledonia State Park's day-use areas. Michaux State Forest is a tail-wagging paradise for off-the-grid hikes. Pro tip: pack a tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, summer humidity in south-central PA can hit your pup harder than you would expect.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/CaledoniaStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Pen Mar?
Yes, RV delivery Pen Mar is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you have never towed or driven a big rig. Use the Delivery filter when searching and enter your destination to see hosts who serve the area. Delivery fees are set by each host and shown upfront. Pro tip: for a stress-free first-time renting an RV experience, delivery plus setup is worth every dollar.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/CaledoniaStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Pen Mar in an RV?
Pen Mar shines from late April through October, with two especially magical windows: mid-May through mid-June when the mountain laurel blooms across South Mountain, and late September through mid-October when fall foliage peaks across the Blue Ridge. Summer highs typically sit in the low to mid 80s F with cooler nights at elevation, more comfortable than DC or Baltimore. Spring temps run roughly 55 to 70 F and fall hovers in the 60s F. Pro tip: time your trip with the free Sunday concert series at Pen Mar County Park (summer season), a beloved local tradition since the park reopened in the late 1970s.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before, can I really do this?
You absolutely can, and Pen Mar is a forgiving place to start. Most first-timers choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer because they drive much like a large truck. Your host will give you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling jacks to the propane system, and you can text or call them throughout your trip. If you're nervous about the winding roads up to Pen Mar County Park or High Rock Vista, choose a host who offers delivery and setup, you skip the driving entirely. Pro tip: practice backing into your campsite at Caledonia State Park's wide pull-through sites before tackling tighter spots. You've got this.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Pen Mar?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat tire on PA Route 16, run out of fuel between Waynesboro and Gettysburg, or have any mechanical hiccup, one call gets help rolling. Your host is also a message or phone call away for questions about quirks specific to their RV. The closest service hubs are Waynesboro (about 5 miles), Hagerstown, MD (about 15 miles), and Chambersburg (about 20 miles), all with full-service repair shops and big-box stores for supplies. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the nearest mile marker if you do need help, it makes dispatch faster on the winding mountain stretches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I cross state lines or take the RV into Canada from Pen Mar?
Yes, crossing state lines is easy and one of the best parts of an RV rental Pennsylvania travelers love. Pen Mar sits on the Mason-Dixon Line, so you can roll into Maryland in under a minute, West Virginia in about 30 minutes, and Virginia in about an hour, all with no extra paperwork. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed on some rentals, but you must confirm with the host before booking since insurance coverage varies by listing. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: popular multi-state loops from Pen Mar include the Civil War Trail through MD, WV, and VA, or a Skyline Drive run through Shenandoah National Park, both stunning in autumn.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on my Pen Mar RV trip?
Easy to budget: Pennsylvania gas prices generally run a bit higher than the national average, and diesel is similar. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class B campervans hit 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. For a weekend at Pen Mar with day trips to Gettysburg and Antietam (about 200 miles total), expect roughly $80 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Waynesboro or Greencastle before heading into the mountains, prices there are usually lower than the smaller stations along PA-16, and avoid topping off in Maryland just over the line where taxes can be higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Pen Mar?
Plan ahead and you will lock in the best spots. Pennsylvania state park campgrounds like Caledonia and Pine Grove Furnace accept reservations up to 12 months in advance through the official PA State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends (especially Independence Day and Labor Day) fill 4 to 6 months out. Maryland state parks like Greenbrier and Cunningham Falls book through their own system roughly a year ahead. Private parks like Drummer Boy and Hagerstown KOA usually have more last-minute availability, 2 to 4 weeks ahead works in shoulder season. Pro tip: for fall foliage weekends in October, book by July at the latest, leaf-peepers fill the Blue Ridge fast.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Pen Mar?
Pen Mar driving is scenic but manageable with a little awareness. PA Route 16 (the main approach from Waynesboro) is a well-maintained two-lane road with moderate grades as you climb to the 1,300-foot summit at Pen Mar County Park. The final climb on Pen Mar Road has tight turns, take it slow in anything over 25 feet. Avoid the steepest grades on Old Forge Road if you're driving a Class A. Winter brings occasional ice and snow from December through February, so most renters stick to April through November. Pro tip: traffic is light here compared to nearby DC and Baltimore, but watch for cyclists and Appalachian Trail hikers crossing PA-16 near the trailheads.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Pen Mar?
You are well-served. Caledonia State Park offers electric hookups, hot showers, a dump station, and potable water fill stations, but no sewer at individual sites. Drummer Boy Camping Resort and Hagerstown/Antietam KOA both have full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Most Pennsylvania state parks include a centralized dump station free for registered campers. For dump and water refills on the road, truck stops in Greencastle and Hagerstown are convenient nearby options. Pro tip: cell service is solid in most campgrounds here but can be spotty at Pen Mar Park's overlook, so download trail maps before you head up to High Rock Vista.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/CaledoniaStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs available to rent in Pen Mar?
You will be impressed by what comes standard. Most RVs on RVezy in the Pen Mar area include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 people, air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many also have a TV, outdoor speakers, awnings, and onboard generators for off-grid camping in Michaux State Forest. Class C and Class A units typically have queen beds; campervans are cozier but easier to drive on PA-16's twisty stretches. Pro tip: review the listing photos and amenity list carefully, and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP-compatible outlet or a particular bed configuration, they are happy to confirm.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pen%20Mar%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Pen Mar area offer genuinely useful extras. Common add-ons include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, and propane fire pits, all priced individually on each listing. Delivery is popular here, with many hosts setting up at Caledonia State Park or Drummer Boy Resort for a fee based on distance. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Waynesboro, Hagerstown, or Chambersburg, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary by host, some offer unlimited mileage, others include 100 to 150 free miles per day with a small per-mile fee over that. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit for the easiest first-time experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pen%20Mar%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy directly when you book, never cash to the host, using a credit or debit card. The total includes the nightly rate, any add-ons you select, the protection plan you choose, and applicable taxes. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (amount varies by RV) and released after your trip ends, assuming no damage. To avoid issues, do the walkthrough carefully at pickup, take photos of any existing scratches or dents, and return the RV with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: keep all communication and receipts inside the RVezy app, it makes any post-trip questions a quick conversation.
