Water recreation centers on the Susquehanna River and nearby lakes. Otter Creek features a boat launch and picnic area along the Susquehanna River, as well as miles of hiking trails, and Lake Redman and Lake Williams south of York offer paddling and shore fishing. Day trips are short. Gettysburg National Military Park is about 39 miles from Red Lion, Lancaster County and its Amish communities are roughly 33 miles away, and Hersheypark sits about 38 miles out, making all three doable as single-day excursions from a base site.

The camping season around Red Lion follows a clear Mid-Atlantic pattern. Most private and state park campgrounds run mid-April through late October or early November, with a few private parks staying open year-round. Otter Creek Campground operates from April 15 to November 1, and Codorus State Park is open for camping mid-April through November 1. Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest window. Sites fill quickly during summer weekends, particularly those with lake views at Codorus State Park and Gifford Pinchot State Park, and holiday weekends often carry minimum-stay requirements at private parks. Otter Creek requires a three-night minimum with full payment in advance for holiday weekends. Shoulder seasons are the value windows. Late April through May brings wildflowers and cooler nights, while September and October deliver York County fall foliage and thinner crowds. Winter camping is limited: many private parks close, and state park campgrounds shut down for the season, though a few year-round options and cabins remain.

Sites near Red Lion range from full-hookup private parks to primitive state park loops. Codorus State Park provides about 192 sites, including full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and electric, modern electric sites with 30 or 50-amp service, modern non-electric sites, and tent-only sites, which covers most rig types up to 50 feet. Expect wooded, rolling terrain rather than open desert-style pads. Private parks in the area offer hookup sites, though open field sites can offer little shade, leading to early morning heat in warmer months. Larger fifth wheels and Class A rigs should confirm site length before booking, since some smaller creekside parks favor compact units. Wildlife is common. Deer, waterfowl, and small mammals frequent the campgrounds along the Susquehanna, and campers should expect to encounter animals of many kinds. Standard food storage and leashed pets are the norm.
