Campgrounds and RV parks near Renningers, PA

Outdoor recreation drives most trips. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, the world's first refuge for birds of prey, sits along the Kittatinny/Blue Mountain ridge and offers an 8-mile trail system, scenic overlooks, a native plant garden, and a visitor center open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Several trails connect to the Appalachian Trail, which runs along the ridge nearby. At Locust Lake State Park, hiking and fishing are popular activities in the 1,772-acre park, with a small sand swimming beach, seasonal trout stocking, boat rentals, and non-powered or electric-motor boating on the 52-acre lake. The Schuylkill River Trail and Pottsville area also offer paddling, cycling, and small-town sightseeing within a short drive.

The core camping season runs from spring through mid-fall. At Locust Lake State Park, the campground opens in early April and closes in mid-October, and most private grounds in the area follow a similar April-through-October window. Spring brings cool nights, budding hardwoods, and stocked trout streams, but expect wet ground and variable temperatures through April. Summer is the busiest stretch. Warm, humid days and reliable weekends push private and state sites toward capacity, especially around holidays and Fourth of July weekend. Reservations for peak summer dates should be locked in months ahead. Fall is a highlight. Foliage typically peaks in mid to late October along the Kittatinny Ridge, coinciding with the tail end of the Hawk Mountain raptor migration, which runs roughly mid-August through mid-December and peaks with broad-winged hawks in mid-September. Late fall and winter are quiet: the state park stays open year-round for day use, but campground hookups close and most private campgrounds shut down until spring.

Sites in this area are typically wooded and set on rolling terrain along the Blue Mountain ridge. At Locust Lake State Park, the 282 campsites are divided into tent or trailer sides of the lake, with tenting on the north side and tent-plus-trailer sites on the south side. All sites sit in a wooded area and include a parking pad, picnic table, fire ring, and cleared area for equipment. Campground conveniences include restrooms with warm showers, playgrounds, an amphitheater, a sanitary dump station, and a camp store with basic supplies and boat rentals. Private parks in the area lean family-oriented, with pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities. Christmas Pines Campground offers 30- and 50-amp sites with sewer, water, and electric, plus hot showers, laundry, and a gift shop. Cell service can be spotty along the ridges and inside the state park, so download park maps before arrival.
