Camping near Rheems, Pennsylvania
Rheems is a small community in western Lancaster County, positioned between Elizabethtown, Hershey, and the Susquehanna River. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of Hersheypark, Lancaster's Amish Country, and the Harrisburg metro area, while keeping them on quieter rural roads well away from urban traffic. Most private campgrounds in the immediate area cater to families visiting the region's theme parks and cultural attractions.
Hershey Road Campground sits just outside Elizabethtown and offers full-hookup RV sites and cabin rentals on a rural property. Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday operates a wooded park positioned as a base for the Hershey and Lancaster corridors. Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground sits closer to the Susquehanna River near Bainbridge.
Hershey RV and Camping Resort and Pinch Pond Family Campground round out the nearby private options, both leaning toward family stays with on-site amenities. State-park camping in the immediate area is limited; most public campgrounds sit farther out in York and northern Lancaster counties.
Things to do near Rheems
Hersheypark is the dominant draw, with roller coasters, a water park, and ZooAmerica clustered about 20 minutes north. Hershey's Chocolate World sits adjacent to the park and adds free attractions and dining, while Hershey Road Campground and Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday both market their proximity to the Hershey attractions. Downtown Lancaster and Amish Country sit under 30 miles east, with buggy tours, farmers markets, and Dutch Wonderland aimed squarely at families.
Outdoor options include Gifford Pinchot State Park across the Susquehanna in York County, which offers the 340-acre Pinchot Lake for boating, fishing, and swimming, plus hiking and biking trails. Susquehannock State Park provides river overlooks, and Samuel S. Lewis State Park is known for kite flying and Susquehanna River views.

The Rheems area has a humid climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and July is typically the hottest month with average highs near 86°F. This is peak season for Hersheypark, and private campgrounds fill quickly on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead is prudent for Friday and Saturday arrivals.
Spring and fall offer the most comfortable RV conditions. September through mid-October typically brings warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity, and it coincides with America's Largest RV Show at the Giant Center in Hershey, which pushes local campground occupancy sharply higher for that week. Book well ahead if travel overlaps with the show.
Winters are cold, with January averaging a high near 37°F and lows in the mid 20s. Snow is regular but not extreme, averaging around 25 inches per year in the Harrisburg area. Many private parks reduce services in winter, though some sites at Hershey Road Campground are winterized for year-round use.

How to book near Rheems
Private campgrounds around Rheems, including Hershey Road Campground, Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday, Hershey RV and Camping Resort, Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground, and Pinch Pond Family Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or, for the KOA, through the KOA reservation system. Peak summer weekends, Hersheypark opening weekends, and the September RV show week are the tightest windows, so aim to book two to three months out for those dates.
For public land, Pennsylvania state parks use the ReserveAmerica-powered Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Most sites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, with the daily booking window opening at noon Eastern Time. Full-hookup sites at DCNR parks are limited, so private parks remain the more reliable choice for larger rigs.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Rheems is gently rolling farmland, and most private RV parks in the area sit on former agricultural land with mixed sun and shade. Sites vary in levelness, and pull-throughs at some nearby parks can be tightly spaced, so travelers with longer rigs should confirm site dimensions when booking. Full hookups are standard at most private parks; state-park sites in the wider region usually offer electric only, with shared water spigots.
Cell service is generally solid across the area given the proximity to Harrisburg and Lancaster. Roads leading to campgrounds are paved and rig-friendly, though some approach roads are narrow rural two-lanes. Grocery stores, propane, and RV service are easy to find in Elizabethtown, Hershey, and Mount Joy.

Good news: your standard Pennsylvania Class C driver's license (or its equivalent from any U.S. state or Canadian province) is all you need for nearly every RV on RVezy. PennDOT only requires an upgraded Class B non-commercial license when a single RV weighs more than 26,001 pounds, and almost every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer listed for rent in Rheems falls well under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older and upload your license through RVezy's secure verification flow when you book. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. That's it, you're ready to rent an RV in Rheems and roll into Amish Country.

Travel into Canada may be allowed with advance host approval and proper insurance documentation, just message the host before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: share your full route with the host upfront, it helps them confirm coverage and mileage.

Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so budget around $4.00 to $4.50 per gallon when planning. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop from Rheems to Hershey, Gettysburg, and back, expect roughly $100 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. For summer weekends and Hersheypark season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book your campground 6 to 12 weeks ahead, especially at popular spots like Elizabethtown/Hershey KOA, Old Mill Stream, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Quarryville. Fall foliage weekends in October are nearly as competitive. Midweek and shoulder-season trips are much more flexible, often just a week or two of lead time. Pro tip: if your dates are locked, book the campground first, then your RVezy rental, you can always adjust the rig but campsites near Hershey sell out.

Driving around Rheems is genuinely friendly for RV renters, the area sits on gentle rolling farmland with no mountain passes, and the main routes (Route 283, Route 230, and Route 30) are wide four-lane corridors. Watch for two local quirks: horse-drawn Amish buggies on rural roads east of Lancaster, where the speed limit drops and you should leave extra following distance, and occasional low covered bridges in the county that are off-limits to tall RVs (most Class A and Class C rigs need at least 12 to 13 feet of clearance). Winter can bring snow and ice from December through February. Pro tip: download the PA 511 app for real-time traffic, weather, and construction alerts before you head out.

Dump stations are standard and usually free for registered guests, with Red Run Resort even offering a paid honey-wagon pump-out at your site. Many have playgrounds, dog runs, and family activities. Pro tip: confirm your RV's amp service matches the site, ask your RVezy host whether your rig is 30 or 50 amp and bring an adapter just in case, it's a $20 part that prevents a frustrating arrival.

Campervan rental in Rheems gives you a smaller footprint with clever space-saving design, perfect for couples. Pro tip: review the listing's amenities list carefully and message the host about anything specific you need, like a CPAP-friendly outlet or extra bedding, hosts almost always accommodate.
visitpa.com/things-to-do/outdoor-activities/campingWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Rheems rental?
RVezy hosts in Rheems offer all kinds of add-ons to customize your motorhome rental in Rheems: linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), fully stocked kitchen kits, outdoor camp chairs and tables, propane fire pits, bike racks, generators, and even pre-stocked groceries. Delivery and setup is the big one, fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location, with many waiving the fee for nearby campgrounds. Pickup is usually flexible: meet at the host's home, a local lot, or have it delivered to Elizabethtown/Hershey KOA or wherever you're staying. Mileage policies vary by listing, with 100 to 150 free miles per day being typical and unlimited-mileage options available. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book, it's almost always cheaper than buying gear separately.
visitpa.com/region/dutch-country-roadsHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at booking, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit (typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, not charged outright, and released after your trip once the host confirms the rig came back clean, undamaged, and with the tanks handled per the agreement. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup and snap photos, return on time, refill propane and fuel as agreed, and dump the tanks (or pay the dump fee). Pro tip: keep all receipts and trip photos in the RVezy app, it makes deposit release fast and frictionless.
