Campgrounds and RV parks near Shamokin Dam, PA

The Susquehanna River is the main draw. Lake Augusta, the pool created by the inflatable Fabridam at Shamokin Dam, covers roughly 3,000 acres and is used for boating, kayaking, and fishing. Pontoon boats, jet skis, kayaks, and canoes can be rented on Packer Island, right next to Fantasy Island Campground. Paddlers looking for longer trips can pick up the Susquehanna River Water Trail, which has primitive canoe-in camping on state-managed islands. Families typically build a trip around Knoebels Amusement Resort, a free-admission park about 25 minutes east. Other nearby stops include Shikellamy State Park across the river, Clyde Peeling's Reptiland in Allenwood, and the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat in Williamsport. Day-trip range also reaches Hershey, Gettysburg, and Harrisburg, each about an hour away by car.

The main camping season in the Susquehanna Valley runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Fantasy Island Campground opens on April 15th and closes for the season on October 15th of each year, and most private parks in the area follow a similar April-to-October window. Splash Magic RV Resort and the Jellystone Park at Milton run their peak family programming from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with themed weekends stretching into shoulder months. Summer brings warm, humid days with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. July is the warmest month, with temperatures averaging a high of about 82°F and a low near 61°F, and it is also the wettest month, with rainfall totaling about 42 mm. Peak booking demand aligns with Knoebels events and holiday weekends, so plan several weeks ahead. Spring and fall are quieter and more comfortable, with mild days and cool nights. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October along the river ridges. Winters are cold and snowy: January averages a high near 32°F and a low near 20°F, and most private campgrounds are closed. Riverside sites can also see seasonal flooding when snowmelt or heavy rain raises the Susquehanna.

Most nearby parks are family-focused with pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities rather than remote or backcountry settings. Fantasy Island amenities include cement patios and pads, laundry facilities, hot showers, TV, free Wi-Fi, a pool, a miniature golf course, and themed events, with a large share of seasonal renters returning each summer. Jellystone Park at Milton adds a splashground, jump pad, and character appearances with Yogi Bear. Splash Magic RV Resort operates a family swimming pool with attached splash park, an adult-only pool, an in-ground hot tub, two water slides, miniature golf, bumper boats, paddle boats, a game room, and a store. Additional vehicles beyond the two included with an RV site must park in the overflow lot. Cell coverage on Packer Island is generally usable on major carriers. Bringing firewood into the park from other areas may spread pest insects and diseases, so campers should use local firewood.
