Camping near Shenandoah, Pennsylvania
Shenandoah sits in Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania's Coal Region, ringed by ridge-and-valley terrain, small lakes, and state game lands. The area is a practical base for RV travelers who want quiet, wooded camping within easy reach of Interstate 81 and day trips into the Poconos, Jim Thorpe, and Hawk Mountain.
The closest option is Locust Lake State Park Campground, which sits on the side of Locust Mountain around a 52-acre lake between two campgrounds surrounded by forest. Private options nearby include Red Ridge Lake Campgrounds, Lakewood Park Campground in Barnesville on a scenic lakeside property spanning more than 50 acres, Rosemount Camping Resort in Tamaqua, and Christmas Pines Campground, LLC in Auburn, set against the Blue Mountains in Schuylkill County.
Most sites lean toward wooded, family-oriented camping rather than resort-style layouts, and full-hookup RV sites are available at several of the private parks.
Things to do near Shenandoah
Water recreation anchors most trips. A small sand beach at Locust Lake permits swimming, the lake receives seasonal trout stocking, multiple hiking trails connect to neighboring Tuscarora State Park, and a paved lake loop serves both pedestrians and cyclists. Lakewood Park Campground has a 10-acre lake that supports fishing and paddling, with kayaks and paddle boats available to guests.
Off-property, the area gives quick access to bigger attractions. Rosemount Camping Resort is a short drive from the Appalachian Trail and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, and works as a base for day trips to Hershey Park, Knoebels Amusement Park, and the Poconos. Hawk Mountain is the world's first refuge for birds of prey, with ridge and valley trails and a fall raptor migration viewable from its lookouts.

The camping calendar here is driven by state park dates and the private parks that mirror them. At Locust Lake State Park Campground the campground opens in early April and closes in mid-October. Cabin rentals extend the season at some private parks: Lakewood Park Campground offers cabins available year-round.
Late spring through early summer brings the greenest conditions and the strongest trout fishing on stocked waters, but also higher humidity and frequent thunderstorms. Peak family demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when weekend and holiday sites fill early.
Early fall is the strongest window for RV travel: cooler nights, low bug pressure, and foliage color across the ridges. By late October most tent-side facilities and dump stations begin shutting down for winter, and only a handful of cabin operations remain accessible.

The park's 282 campsites, which include tent-only sites and electric hookup sites, are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation website, with reservations opening 11 months in advance and bookable up until noon on the day of arrival. Reservations can also be made by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.

What to expect on-site
Sites in this area are generally wooded and can be uneven. Locust Lake State Park Campground campsites sit in a wooded area with a parking pad, picnic table, fire ring, and cleared area for camping equipment; pets are permitted at designated sites for a fee. The campground has modern restrooms with warm showers, a sanitary dump station, playgrounds, an amphitheater, and a camp store.
RV hookups vary by park. Lakewood Park Campground RV sites are full hookups with water, electric, and sewer, and WiFi and cable TV are available. Rosemount Camping Resort offers full hookup options. After that window, refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel and whether extenuating circumstances apply. Full policy details are available in the RVezy Help Center and through customer support before you commit. Pro tip: book your RV early to lock in the rig you want, then finalize your Schuylkill County campground reservations, you will still have time to adjust if plans change.

Tuscarora State Park nearby is also dog-friendly. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and ask about nearby dog-friendly hikes, many Shenandoah-area owners are dog lovers themselves and happy to share local favorites.

penndot.pa.gov/travelinpa/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Shenandoah, PA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Shenandoah. Locust Lake State Park (8 miles south in Barnesville) is the local favorite, with 282 wooded sites, a 52-acre swimming lake, and electric hookups on many sites. Tuscarora State Park, just minutes away, offers reservable sites and a quieter vibe. Hidden Cove Campground and Mountain Springs Camping Resort in Schuylkill County both have full-hookup RV sites with pools and family amenities. For something different, Knoebels Amusement Resort campground in Elysburg (about 35 miles west) lets you park steps from a classic, free-admission amusement park. Pro tip: reserve through the Pennsylvania State Parks system up to 11 months in advance for the best lakeside spots.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time to rent an RV in Shenandoah, PA?
Late April through late October is prime time for RV camping Shenandoah, and each stretch has its own appeal. May and June bring lush green mountains and average highs in the 70s, perfect for hiking around Locust Lake without summer crowds. July and August are the warmest months with highs near 81°F, great for swimming and lake days. But locals will tell you the real magic is late September through mid-October, when Schuylkill County's hardwood forests blaze with red and orange foliage and overnight lows in the 40s make for cozy campfires. Winters here are cold and snowy (January averages 19 to 32°F), so most campgrounds, including Locust Lake, close mid-October through mid-April.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Shenandoah?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in a small town like Shenandoah where you're not battling city traffic from the start. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slides, hookups, water system, and dash before you drive off. If you're nervous about driving, choose a travel trailer with a tow vehicle you're comfortable in, a Class B campervan rental Shenandoah option (essentially a tall van), or simply book a host who offers delivery. Stick to Route 54 or I-81 for your first miles, both are wide and well-maintained. Within an hour, you'll feel like a pro.
penndot.pa.gov/safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan, so a single call connects you with help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, tows, and most mechanical issues anywhere in Pennsylvania. Shenandoah sits right off I-81, so help can reach you quickly even from remote spots near Weiser State Forest or Locust Mountain. Your host is also a message away through the RVezy app and often knows local repair shops if something rig-specific comes up. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Shenandoah RV rental into other states or across the Canadian border?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed on most RVezy rentals from Shenandoah, and you've got incredible options just hours away. From Shenandoah you can be in New York City in about 2.5 hours, the New Jersey Shore in 2 hours, Washington D.C. in about 3.5 hours, the Finger Lakes in around 4 hours, or Niagara Falls in roughly 5 hours, making this a great launch point for an RV road trip from Shenandoah. Cross-border travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the host and insurance, so message the owner before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Heads up: travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance doesn't extend there.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and you won't be shocked at the pump. Class C motorhomes around Shenandoah typically get 8 to 12 mpg, Class A rigs 6 to 10 mpg, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg), and a campervan rental Shenandoah option like a Class B can hit 16 to 20 mpg. Pennsylvania gas prices generally run a bit above the national average, with stations along I-81 in Schuylkill County offering some of the more competitive prices. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop through the Poconos and back, budget roughly $80 to $150 in fuel for a mid-size motorhome. Pro tip: fill up in Frackville or Hazleton rather than at highway exits closer to tourist areas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Shenandoah?
For the best sites, book early. Pennsylvania State Parks (including Locust Lake and Tuscarora) open reservations 11 months ahead through the official ReserveAmerica system, and the prime lakeside and full-hookup sites at Locust Lake often fill 4 to 6 months out for summer weekends and fall-foliage weekends in October. Private campgrounds like Mountain Springs Camping Resort and Hidden Cove typically take reservations year-round and can sometimes accommodate last-minute bookings mid-week. Pro tip: if you're flexible, Sunday through Thursday nights are far easier to grab, and many private parks in Schuylkill County offer reduced mid-week rates that pair perfectly with a cheap RV rental Shenandoah deal on RVezy.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Shenandoah?
Driving around Shenandoah is very RV-friendly once you know the lay of the land. Route 54 and Route 61 are the main local highways with gentle grades, and I-81 (just 10 miles west via Frackville) gives you fast, four-lane access to the rest of Pennsylvania. The terrain is rolling Appalachian foothills, so you'll handle a few climbs around Locust Mountain and Mahanoy Mountain, nothing extreme, but use lower gears on descents. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and in winter (November through March) expect snow and ice on side roads. Pro tip: avoid the narrow, winding old coal-town streets in downtown Shenandoah itself with larger Class A motorhomes; stick to the main routes and use municipal lots if you need to stop.
511pa.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Shenandoah offer, and where can I dump tanks or fill water?
Local campgrounds make RV life easy. Locust Lake State Park has a sanitary dump station, potable water fills, modern restrooms, hot showers, and 50-amp electric sites, with some full-hookup sites being added as the park expands. Mountain Springs Camping Resort and Hidden Cove offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric) plus laundry and Wi-Fi. Need to dump between trips? Hazleton, Pottsville, and Frackville all have public dump stations at select truck stops and travel plazas along I-81. Pro tip: top off freshwater before you leave the campground each morning, water spigots are reliable at Pennsylvania state parks but harder to find roadside in the coal-region back roads.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/state-parks/find-a-park/locust-lake-state-park.htmlWhat's included inside a typical Shenandoah RV rental?
You will be impressed by how turnkey a motorhome rental in Shenandoah typically is. Most rigs on RVezy come with real beds (queen master plus convertible dinette or bunks), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with AC and a propane furnace, and seatbelted travel seats. Many hosts include linens, towels, outdoor chairs, a coffee maker, and a starter kit of paper goods. Larger Class A and C rigs often add a generator and TV, while compact campervans focus on efficient living essentials. Pro tip: review the listing's amenities list and message the host about anything specific (like a child car seat anchor or extra propane) so it is ready at pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shenandoah%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Shenandoah offer plenty of useful add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include camping kits (chairs, table, lantern), bike racks, kayak or paddleboard mounts, generators, propane refills, linen packages, and pre-stocked kitchens, typically $15 to $75 each. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Shenandoah with flexible 2 to 4 hour windows. Delivery and setup to Locust Lake, Tuscarora, or your driveway is widely available, often $2 to $5 per mile. Mileage allowances vary, with 100 to 150 free miles per day being typical and unlimited mileage on some weekly bookings. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a camping kit and you will arrive to a fully ready camp, just bring food and clothes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shenandoah%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, handled entirely through the RVezy platform with no cash exchanged with the host. You pay your rental total (nightly rate, fees, any add-ons, and your chosen protection plan) at booking using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup, typically a few hundred to about $1,500 depending on the rig, and released after drop-off assuming the RV is returned in good shape. To avoid issues, do the walkthrough with your host at pickup, take dated photos inside and out, and return the RV at the agreed fuel and tank levels.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Shenandoah during winter?
Yes, and it's a quietly magical time to do it. Winter RV rental in Shenandoah, PA is offered by select hosts who keep their rigs ready year-round, often with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces sized for Pennsylvania cold (January lows average 19°F). While Locust Lake State Park closes mid-October to mid-April, you can stay at year-round private parks like Mountain Springs or set up on a friend's driveway with shore power. Winter is also prime time for snowmobiling, ice fishing on Locust Lake, and quiet Pocono getaways under fresh snow. Pro tip: filter for winter-ready RVs and message the host about cold-weather prep, including how to keep your freshwater hose from freezing overnight.
