Camping near Shippensburg, Pennsylvania
Shippensburg sits in the Cumberland Valley of south-central Pennsylvania, with the ridges of South Mountain to the east and the Tuscarora Mountains to the west. The location puts RVers within a short drive of several Pennsylvania state parks in the South Mountain and Tuscarora regions, plus a cluster of private family campgrounds along the I-81 corridor.
The closest state-park option is Chinquapin Hill - Caledonia State Park, a forested campground midway between Chambersburg and Gettysburg with non-electric sites, electric sites, and 18 full-hookup sites. Pine Grove Furnace State Park lies to the northeast in Michaux State Forest, with 70 modern tent and trailer sites near Laurel and Fuller Lakes. Fowlers Hollow State Park sits west in a narrow valley on the edge of Tuscarora State Forest, offering a smaller, more remote base.
Private options round out the picture. Dogwood Acres Campground, Inc. is a family-run park at the foot of Blue Mountain outside Carlisle, and Twin Bridge Meadow Family Campground sits in farmland outside Chambersburg near I-81 and Route 30.
Things to do around Shippensburg
Hiking is the headline activity. The Appalachian Trail passes through Caledonia State Park and continues north through Pine Grove Furnace, where the Appalachian Trail Museum and the Pole Steeple trail offer a moderately challenging climb to a rocky overlook. Fowlers Hollow connects directly into the Tuscarora State Forest trail network, including access to the long-distance Tuscarora Trail.
Water recreation is close by. A swimming pool operates seasonally at Caledonia, Pine Grove Furnace has Laurel Lake and Fuller Lake for swimming and paddling, and Fowlers Hollow Run flows through the park and supports stocked trout fishing.
Private parks add pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities, and Gettysburg National Military Park sits roughly 20 to 30 minutes east for a history-focused day trip.

Private parks like Twin Bridge Meadow typically operate spring through mid-October.
Summer is peak season. Weekends fill early, especially around holidays, and traffic increases on Friday afternoons as vacationers head into the area. Spring brings wildflower displays and cool nights, while fall delivers foliage across the ridges with lighter crowds after Labor Day.

How to book campgrounds near Shippensburg
Pennsylvania state park sites are booked through the DCNR reservation system. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival, either online at the visitPAparks portal or by phone at 888-PA-PARKS. That system covers Chinquapin Hill - Caledonia State Park, Pine Grove Furnace State Park, and Fowlers Hollow State Park.
Private parks book directly. Dogwood Acres Campground, Inc. and Twin Bridge Meadow Family Campground both take reservations by phone and through their own websites.
For summer weekends and holidays, reserve as early as possible. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak season when Appalachian Trail hikers frequent the area. Cell service is spotty inside the state parks, so confirm details before arrival.
What to expect on site
Hookup levels vary widely. Caledonia accommodates RVs up to 45 feet with full hookups alongside electric and non-electric sites. Pine Grove Furnace offers 70 modern campsites for tents or trailers, with electric service available at most sites, plus a sanitary dump station but no individual water hookups. Fowlers Hollow has flush toilets, a water spigot, and a sanitary dump station, but no showers, and its 12 electric and water sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet.
Expect wooded, hilly terrain at the state parks. Some sites sit on steep slopes that affect RV leveling, so scouting site photos ahead is worthwhile for larger rigs. Pets are prohibited in the Chinquapin Hill campground, but permitted at Hosack Run, Pine Grove Furnace, and Fowlers Hollow.
Cell service is limited inside the state forests, so download maps ahead of time. Groceries and RV supplies are available in Shippensburg, Chambersburg, and Carlisle.

Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in the best-priced rigs before summer weekends sell out.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shippensburg%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Shippensburg, PA?
Good news: your regular Pennsylvania Class C driver's license is all you need for virtually every RV rental in Shippensburg. Pennsylvania only requires a Non-Commercial Class A or B license for rigs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and almost every RV on RVezy falls comfortably under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy as an approved driver. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). ID verification happens right through the platform, so there's no extra DMV trip.

Every RVezy booking in Shippensburg includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 11 with confidence. The protection plan covers damage to the RV, giving you peace of mind whether you're parking at Pine Grove Furnace State Park or driving the winding roads through Michaux State Forest. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Shippensburg RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy platform-wide, not the host, and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. If life changes or weather turns, refund options are based on how far out your trip is and the circumstances. You won't see cancellation terms buried inside individual listings because the same RVezy policy applies across the platform. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs for Gettysburg battlefield weekends or Shippensburg Community Fair week, knowing you have clear flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Shippensburg?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Shippensburg is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs from local hosts who welcome dogs. Once you're on the road, your pup will enjoy Pine Grove Furnace State Park, which permits leashed pets at designated pet-friendly campsites, plus dog-friendly Appalachian Trail sections that pass through the park. Caledonia State Park and Cowans Gap State Park also allow leashed dogs at marked sites. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee, and pack a tie-out and extra water bowl since summer humidity in Cumberland County can climb fast.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/pine-grove-furnace-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Shippensburg?
Yes, RV delivery in Shippensburg is a popular option, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV straight to your campsite at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Caledonia State Park, or a private campground like Drummer Boy Camping Resort, level it, hook up utilities, and walk you through every system. That means no learning to back into a wooded site on day one. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which rigs offer it along with the per-mile rate from the host's base. Pro tip: delivery is a smart pick if you're flying into Harrisburg International Airport (MDT), about an hour away, and don't want to tow.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shippensburg%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow far can I travel on a Shippensburg RV trip?
You can cover serious ground from Shippensburg thanks to its location right on Interstate 81 in the Cumberland Valley. Gettysburg National Military Park sits about 30 miles east, Harrisburg is roughly 45 miles northeast, Hershey is about 60 miles, Washington D.C. is roughly 110 miles south, and Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive entrance is about 100 miles southwest. Each Shippensburg RV trip listing shows the host's daily mileage allowance, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer loop through the Blue Ridge. Pro tip: if you're eyeing a multi-state route, message the host about a custom mileage package before booking.
nps.gov/gett/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Shippensburg, PA?
You have great choices for RV camping near Shippensburg. Top picks include Pine Grove Furnace State Park (74 tent and trailer sites with a dump station, open late March through mid-December), Caledonia State Park about 20 minutes south with big-rig-friendly drive-in sites, Cowans Gap State Park west in the mountains with a swimmable lake, Drummer Boy Camping Resort near the Gettysburg battlefields, and Granite Hill Camping Resort with full hookups. Pro tip: book Pennsylvania state parks up to 11 months in advance through the DCNR reservation system, since summer weekends fill fast, especially around the Appalachian Trail midpoint.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/pine-grove-furnace-state-park.htmlWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Shippensburg, PA?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley, with July highs averaging in the mid-80s and comfortable nights in the 60s. June and September are arguably the best months: long daylight, lighter campground crowds, and fewer mosquitoes than peak July. Fall foliage in Michaux State Forest typically peaks in mid to late October and is genuinely spectacular along the Appalachian Trail. Winters get cold (January highs average around 38 degrees Fahrenheit with moderate snowfall), but many hosts still rent year-round. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season trip and you'll often score weekday rates well below peak summer pricing.
forecast.weather.gov/zipcity.php?inputstring=Shippensburg,PAI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Shippensburg?
You've got this, and Shippensburg is a great place for your first time renting an RV. The town sits on the flat valley floor with wide rural roads, easy access to Interstate 81, and minimal big-city traffic compared to Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering hookups, slide-outs, leveling, propane, and dump procedures, so you won't be left guessing. If you're nervous about driving, choose a Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Shippensburg under 25 feet, or book delivery and skip driving the rig entirely. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on US Route 11 before heading into the South Mountain curves toward Pine Grove Furnace.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002975853-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Shippensburg booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns. If the fridge stops cooling on a hot July day at Caledonia State Park or you can't get the slide-out to retract, message your host first since they know their rig best, then loop in RVezy support if you need backup. Cell coverage is reliable across most of Cumberland and Franklin counties, though it gets spotty deep in Michaux State Forest, so screenshot your roadside number before heading into the trees. Help is genuinely a phone call away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take my Shippensburg RV rental out of state or across the Canadian border?
Yes to multi-state trips, and Shippensburg's location makes it an ideal launchpad for an RV road trip from Shippensburg. Maryland is about 20 minutes south, West Virginia about an hour, Virginia under 90 minutes, and New Jersey or New York within a half-day drive. Most hosts welcome travel through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, so confirm your route in the booking message. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so ask before you book. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Popular routes from Shippensburg include Gettysburg to Antietam, the Skyline Drive loop, and the Pennsylvania Wilds up north.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Shippensburg RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your trip budget. Expect Class C motorhomes to get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A rigs 6 to 10 mpg, and a campervan rental in Shippensburg 16 to 20 mpg. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, with Sheetz and Rutter's stations on US Route 11 and along I-81 offering reliable diesel and DEF. For a 200-mile loop to Gettysburg, Hershey, and back, plan on roughly $80 to $140 in fuel for a midsize motorhome. Pro tip: fill up in Shippensburg or Chambersburg before heading west into Fulton County, where stations get sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Shippensburg?
For peak weekends, book your campsite as soon as your RV is reserved. Pennsylvania State Parks like Pine Grove Furnace, Caledonia, and Cowans Gap open reservations up to 11 months ahead through the DCNR reservation system, and Memorial Day, July 4th, and fall-foliage weekends sell out months in advance. Private parks like Drummer Boy Camping Resort and Granite Hill Camping Resort take direct bookings and fill up fast for Civil War reenactment weekends. For midweek or shoulder-season family RV trip Shippensburg dates, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: if your first choice is full, set a cancellation alert since openings happen daily.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/pine-grove-furnace-state-park.htmlWhat are the local driving conditions like around Shippensburg?
Driving is genuinely easy here. Shippensburg sits in the broad, flat Cumberland Valley with US Route 11 running north-south through town and Interstate 81 just minutes away, both wide, well-maintained, and RV-friendly. The drives get more interesting heading east on PA Route 233 into Michaux State Forest, with tighter curves and grades climbing into South Mountain toward Pine Grove Furnace. Winter brings moderate snowfall, so November through March trips need attention to forecasts. Pro tip: avoid downtown Shippensburg's tight historic streets near Shippensburg University if you're in a Class A; stick to King Street (PA Route 696) and Route 11.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Shippensburg?
Local campgrounds range from rustic to resort, so you can match the trip to your style. Pennsylvania State Parks like Pine Grove Furnace offer electric hookups at many sites, modern shower houses, flush toilets, and a dump station, but no individual water hookups, so fill your freshwater tank on arrival. Caledonia State Park has similar amenities plus a swimming pool. Private RV parks such as Drummer Boy, Granite Hill, and Gettysburg Battlefield Resort offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Pro tip: plan an end-of-trip dump at a state park or private campground dump station before returning the RV.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/pine-grove-furnace-state-park.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Shippensburg?

A typical motorhome rental in Shippensburg sleeps 4 to 8 with a real queen bed, fold-out dinette, kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge and freezer, full bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and a TV. Many rigs include a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays in Michaux State Forest, plus seatbelts for safe travel between Gettysburg and Hershey. Class B campervans are more compact but still pack a wet bath, mini kitchen, and sleeping for 2 to 4. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count on RVezy to match your group, and check listing photos for Wi-Fi hotspots if you need to work from the road.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shippensburg%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

Common extras include linen and kitchen packages, camp chairs and outdoor mats, generators or extra propane for boondocking in Michaux State Forest, bike racks, and pet packages. Pro tip: bundle delivery and setup for a true zero-stress arrival.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shippensburg%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through the RVezy platform, with no cash and no awkward handoffs with the host. You pay for your Shippensburg booking securely online with a credit or debit card when you reserve. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup, snap photos of any existing scuffs, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels noted on your agreement. Transparent and protected end-to-end.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park overnight if I'm not at a campground?
You have real options for overnight stops around Shippensburg. Some Cracker Barrel and Walmart Supercenter locations along I-81 traditionally allow free overnight RV parking with a manager's approval, so always call ahead since policies vary by store. Pennsylvania welcome centers along I-81 permit short rest stops but not overnight stays. For scenic low-cost camping, Michaux State Forest offers primitive motorized camping with a free DCNR permit, suited to self-contained rigs. Pro tip: never park overnight on Shippensburg University property or on downtown borough streets where it's prohibited. When in doubt, book a site at a nearby private campground and enjoy a hot shower.
