Campgrounds and RV parks near Swartzville, PA

Adamstown, immediately northeast of Swartzville, is known as an antique-market hub, with large indoor and outdoor markets clustered along Route 272 that run heaviest on Sundays. Reading, Lancaster, and Rockvale outlet shopping are all within a short drive, along with the Green Dragon Farmers Market in Ephrata on Fridays. Families typically pair a stay here with day trips to Dutch Wonderland, the Strasburg Rail Road, and the Amish farm attractions south of Lancaster city. Hershey is roughly an hour west by road. For outdoor time, French Creek State Park is the largest public land within easy reach. It offers more than 35 miles of trails, two lakes for paddling and fishing, and a swimming pool at Scotts Run. Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, north of Swartzville near Kleinfeltersville, is a popular stop for birding, especially during the snow goose and tundra swan migration in February and March.

The Swartzville area follows a humid continental pattern with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm, humid, and wet, and winters are cold with regular snowfall. Most private campgrounds around Swartzville, including Shady Grove Campground, operate on a seasonal calendar that runs roughly April through the end of October, so winter RV options are limited to the small number of year-round parks and to state-park cabins. Memorial Day through Labor Day is peak season. Weekend sites at Shady Grove Campground, Dutch Cousin Campground, and Woodcrest Retreat book up well ahead, and holiday weekends often carry multi-night minimums at private parks. Confirm minimum-stay policies directly with each operator when booking summer or holiday dates. Spring and fall are quieter and generally more comfortable for touring. September is typically the wettest month on the local climate record, and October is prime foliage in the surrounding hills. Winter travel is viable for cabin stays and for visitors targeting the snow-goose staging at Middle Creek in late February and into March.

Roads into the campgrounds off Route 272 and Route 897 are two-lane and rural, with some tight turns near Poplar Drive and West Swartzville Road. Larger Class A rigs and long fifth-wheels are accepted at Shady Grove Campground, which lists a 60-foot maximum length and pull-through options, but drivers should scout the final approach before committing. Expect a mix of gravel and grass sites, terraced where the terrain slopes. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are common but not universal, and cell coverage is generally solid across the East Cocalico area, with campground Wi-Fi available at most parks. Quiet hours, pet rules, and alcohol policies vary between parks, so check each operator's rules before arrival. Pennsylvania state parks including French Creek prohibit alcohol and restrict outside firewood. Buy firewood on site or from local vendors to comply with invasive-species rules.
