Campgrounds and RV parks near Throop, PA

Water is the main draw. At Lackawanna State Park, the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake is surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest, and boating, fishing, mountain biking and swimming are popular activities. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort adds a full resort layer, with lake and solar-heated pool swimming, a pet beach, rowboats, aqua cycles, kayak, canoe and paddleboard rentals, plus a scheduled activity program that runs through the summer. Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc. offers a quieter alternative, with a 21-acre spring-fed lake for swimming and fishing and rowboats on site. Off-site, Scranton is minutes from Throop and puts Steamtown National Historic Site, the Electric City Aquarium, and Montage Mountain within an easy afternoon loop.

The camping window in northeastern Pennsylvania is tight. The Lackawanna State Park campground opens the second Friday in April and closes October 14. Private resorts follow a similar pattern: Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc. typically operates from May 1 to October 31, and Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort runs from early May through Columbus Day in early to mid October. July and August are peak season. Weekends fill fastest, especially around the July 4 holiday, and lakefront and full-hookup sites go first. Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots for RV travelers who want cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier bookings. Fall color across the Poconos typically peaks in mid to late October, after most private campgrounds have closed. Winter is not a general RV season here. Snow, freezing temperatures, and closed water systems mean private campgrounds shut down entirely, and state park camping is not offered. Travelers set on a cold-weather visit should call the park office directly to confirm what is open.

Sites in this area are typically wooded, and terrain is rolling rather than flat. RV sites at Lackawanna State Park include electric hookups, and a sanitary dump station sits near the campground entrance. Full hookups with sewer are found mainly at private resorts such as Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort and Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc., where 30 and 50 amp service is standard. Pets are welcome at most nearby campgrounds but often restricted to designated loops or sites. At Lackawanna State Park, pets are limited to designated pet-friendly sites. One rule matters for every RV traveler: bringing firewood into Pennsylvania is prohibited and could result in a citation. Buy firewood locally at the campground store or a nearby vendor. Cell service can be spotty in wooded valleys, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.
