Camping near Vandling, Pennsylvania
Vandling is a small borough in Lackawanna County in northeastern Pennsylvania, sitting on Route 171 between Forest City and Carbondale in the upper Lackawanna River valley. The area functions as a quiet base for RV travelers heading into the northern Pocono Mountains and Wayne County lake country, with Scranton about a half hour south via the Casey Highway and the New York state line a short drive north.
Private campgrounds dominate the immediate area. Closest options include Valley View Farm and Campground and Ponderosa Pines Campground in the surrounding hills, while Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort and Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc. sit a short drive east in Wayne County. Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday, a full-service KOA off Route 670, rounds out the nearby full-hookup choices.
For public land, Lackawanna State Park is the anchor site to the south. The 1,445-acre park is centered on 198-acre Lackawanna Lake, and its campground offers electric sites, tent sites, cottages, and yurts, all bookable through the Pennsylvania state parks reservation system.
Things to do around Vandling
The D&H Rail-Trail passes directly through Vandling. A stone-dust improved section covers roughly ten miles from Vandling to Herrick Center along the Upper Lackawanna River, suitable for hybrid and mountain bikes and shared with hikers, runners, and equestrians. Rougher graded railbed continues north toward the New York border along a total corridor of about 38 miles, and the parallel O&W Rail-Trail offers another eight miles of graded railbed from Simpson to Stillwater Dam.
Water recreation centers on Lackawanna Lake at Lackawanna State Park, where visitors boat, kayak, fish, and swim, and on the private lake at Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort, which offers boating, a swimming beach, and family activities.
Elk Mountain Ski Resort sits a short drive from the borough for winter trips, and Steamtown National Historic Site and downtown Scranton are within easy day-trip range to the south.

The main RV season in northeastern Pennsylvania runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Lackawanna State Park's campground opens the second Friday in April and closes in mid-October, and Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday runs on a comparable spring-through-fall schedule with on-site activities from Memorial Day through mid-October.
Summer is the busiest window. July and August bring warm days, active lake use, and full activity calendars at family campgrounds like Keen Lake and the Honesdale KOA. Holiday weekends fill early, and the Honesdale KOA lists no refunds for cancellations on Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Columbus weekends, though bookings can be rescheduled to another weekend within a year.
Spring shoulder weeks can be wet and cool, and fall brings foliage color and quieter sites into October. Winter camping options are limited: most private parks close, though the Honesdale KOA offers long-term winter sites, and nearby Elk Mountain draws skiers to the area.
How to book a campsite near Vandling
For state land, use the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system for Lackawanna State Park. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance and must be reserved at least three days ahead of arrival, with some first-come, first-served availability at the campground when space allows. Reservations can also be made by phone at 888-PA-PARKS.
Private parks each run their own systems. Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday books through KOA.com or by phone, with a strict no-refund policy on major holiday weekends, a 14-day notice requirement for cabins, and a 7-day notice for RV and tent sites, each with a cancellation fee. Keen Lake, Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc., Valley View Farm and Campground, and Ponderosa Pines Campground each take reservations through their own websites or by phone, and several offer monthly and full-season sites for extended stays.
For peak summer weekends and holidays, book several months out. Shoulder-season midweek stays are typically easier to secure on shorter notice.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of forested, rolling terrain and small lakes rather than dramatic wilderness. Roads into private campgrounds can be narrow and tight in places, so drivers of larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before arrival and follow campground-provided directions rather than GPS, which the Honesdale KOA specifically advises against for RVs approaching on Route 670.
Full-hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, water, and cable are standard at the Honesdale KOA, while Lackawanna State Park offers electric sites plus a sanitary dump station near the campground entrance, along with cottages and yurts in the Carpentertown loop. Cell service can be spotty in and around the state park, so downloading maps in advance is wise.
Pets are welcome at most parks with restrictions: Lackawanna State Park designates specific pet-friendly facilities, and the Honesdale KOA limits pets to pet-friendly units with an added nightly fee and a two-pet limit per site.
