Campgrounds and RV parks near Wakefield, PA

Water recreation anchors most trips. The lower Susquehanna River and Muddy Run Reservoir are close by, and the reservoir offers kayak, canoe, rowboat, and paddleboat rentals from the park boat dock. Swimming is not permitted in the reservoir, so plan on paddling, fishing, and shoreline picnics rather than a swim day at the lake itself. On land, the area is known for Amish country drives, farm stands, covered bridges, and Lancaster County back roads. Muddy Run Park itself adds hiking trails, a snack bar, a camp store, coin-operated laundry, and the Ryan Observatory, which hosts public stargazing nights. Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Quarryville, PA typically build the trip around on-site pools, character events, and mini-golf, then day-trip to Lancaster city and Strasburg rail attractions.

Most private campgrounds around Wakefield run a spring-through-fall season rather than year-round. Muddy Run Recreation Park - Utility is open from around March 1 through October 31, and other Lancaster County parks follow a similar window, opening in late March or April and closing between mid-October and early November. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Quarryville, PA and similar family parks typically open earlier for weekend traffic and stay open through the fall foliage season. Summer weekends are the busiest stretch. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day sell out weeks in advance, and full-hookup sites go first. Fall is quieter but still popular for foliage weekends in October, when Lancaster County farm events draw heavy day-use traffic. Winter overnight camping options are limited. The Muddy Run campground closes for the season, while the surrounding park stays open year-round and free to the public, so off-season visitors can still hike and fish even when overnight sites are closed.

Sites in this part of Lancaster County range from open, big-rig friendly pads to shaded wooded loops. Muddy Run Campground has 189 sites, including 148 trailer sites with electric and water hookups, 38 tent sites, and 3 primitive group sites. Each site has a picnic table, a charcoal grill, a fire ring, and a paved parking pad, and sites are wired for 30 and 50 amp service. Sewer hookups are not universal in the area. Muddy Run does not offer sewer at the site but provides two sanitary dump stations, so plan on using a dump station on the way out if the site is water and electric only. Quiet hours and visitor rules are enforced at most family parks in the area, and security is on-site during the camping season at Muddy Run.
