Camping near Waymart, Pennsylvania
Waymart is a small borough in Wayne County, in the northern Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. The area sits in rolling forested terrain roughly a half-hour east of Scranton and just north of Honesdale, making it a practical base for RV travelers who want lake access without the traffic of the central Poconos resort corridor.
Private campgrounds dominate the local supply. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort anchors the area with lakefront RV sites, cottages, glamping tents, and a private spring-fed lake. Ponderosa Pines Campground, Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc., and Valley View Farm and Campground provide additional wooded and rural options within a short drive, and Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday rounds out the mix with the standard KOA hookup layout.
Public land is close but limited for overnight stays. Prompton State Park sits minutes from town and offers day-use lake recreation, though it has no developed campground of its own. That pattern pushes most RV travelers toward the private parks listed above.
Things to do around Waymart
Water recreation drives most trips. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort centers on a roughly 90-acre spring-fed lake with fishing, swimming, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and a dedicated pet beach. A few miles away, Prompton State Park surrounds a 290-acre reservoir open to non-powered boats and motors up to 10 horsepower, with about 26 miles of hiking trails around the shoreline. Swimming is not permitted in the reservoir.
Off the water, day trips work well. Honesdale is a short drive and offers small-town shops, restaurants, and the Wayne County Historical Society. Scranton adds Steamtown National Historic Site and the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour. Waymart itself preserves a Delaware and Hudson Gravity Railroad depot listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The RV season in the northern Poconos runs roughly from late April into mid- or late October, with most private campgrounds around Waymart open through that window. Summer is peak: July averages near 81°F for the daytime high and delivers the warmest lake temperatures, and it is also the season for the busiest activity calendars at family resorts like Keen Lake.
Spring brings mild days, wildflowers, and cool nights that can still drop below freezing in March and early April. Fall is a strong pick for RV travelers who want quieter sites and foliage color. October highs sit around the upper 50s Fahrenheit, and campgrounds across the Pocono region fill for foliage weekends, so book well ahead.
Winters are cold and snowy. Honesdale averages roughly 52 inches of snow per year, with measurable snowfall typical from November through April. Most private RV parks close for the winter, and Prompton State Park stays open for day-use activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing but has no camping.
How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds around Waymart handle their own reservations. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort books through its own website, and the Honesdale/Pocono KOA Holiday books through koa.com. Ponderosa Pines Campground, Cherry Ridge Campsites and Lodging, Inc., and Valley View Farm and Campground take reservations directly through their operators. Summer weekends, holiday weeks, and October foliage weekends sell out earliest, so lock in dates as far ahead as possible.
For public land, Pennsylvania state parks use a single reservation portal at pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, with new inventory released at noon Eastern Time. Prompton State Park has no reservable overnight facilities, so plan on a nearby private campground for RV stays.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the Waymart area follow US 6 and PA 170 through rolling terrain. Sites at Keen Lake range from full-hookup RV pads with 20, 30, and 50 amp service to tent areas and safari-tent glamping, with a heated pool, playgrounds, sports courts, a snack bar, and scheduled activities through the summer. Some interior loops are tight, so oversized rigs should ask for a suitable site at booking.
Expect standard Pocono conditions: shaded wooded sites, mosquitoes and black flies in late spring and early summer, and cool overnight temperatures even in July. Cell service is inconsistent around the state park and some private campgrounds, so download maps ahead of time. Pennsylvania state parks prohibit alcohol, and pets are welcome at most private parks in designated sections on a leash.

Pro tip: ask your host to record a short walkthrough video on your phone, you'll thank yourself at the campsite.

RVezy customer support is also available around the clock to coordinate with your host and arrange backup plans if needed. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave Waymart, cell service can get patchy in the deeper Pocono valleys.

Canadian travel may be permitted depending on the host and the protection plan you choose, so message the host through the listing to confirm before booking. Plan smart and you'll cruise affordably. Class C motorhomes around Waymart typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A coaches 6 to 9 MPG, campervans 15 to 20 MPG, and trucks towing travel trailers 10 to 14 MPG. Pennsylvania regular unleaded usually runs a bit above the national average; you'll find competitive prices at the Sheetz and Pilot stations in Honesdale (about 7 miles away) and along I-84 near Lake Ariel. A weekend loop to Lake Wallenpaupack, Steamtown, and back to Waymart (about 120 miles) often costs $40 to $70 in fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Honesdale before heading deeper into the Poconos, rural stations charge more.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book my campground?

Pennsylvania state parks like Promised Land and Tobyhanna release reservations up to 11 months ahead through the Pennsylvania DCNR reservation system, and prime summer weekends sell out months in advance. Private parks like Keen Lake Camping & Cottage Resort and Valley View Farm and Campground take direct online bookings, with July and August holiday weekends often filling by late spring. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or early October, you can usually find sites two to four weeks out. Pro tip: midweek arrivals at Lake Wallenpaupack campgrounds give you better site selection and quieter nights.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhat are the driving conditions like around Waymart?
Driving an RV around Waymart is genuinely manageable, even for first-timers. The main routes (US-6, US-191, PA-296, and I-84) are well-paved two- and four-lane roads with moderate Pocono grades, no white-knuckle mountain passes. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Wayne County has a high deer population), and slow down on rural backroads after rain since they can be slick. In winter, lake-effect snow squalls can roll in fast between December and March. Pro tip: avoid driving narrow residential streets in downtown Honesdale with a big rig, stick to US-6 and use larger lots near the Wayne County Fairgrounds when stopping for supplies.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Waymart?
Expect comfortable, well-equipped sites. Most campgrounds near Waymart offer water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer hookups (full hookups at Keen Lake and Valley View Farm), plus on-site dump stations, potable water fill, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi in common areas. Keen Lake adds a private swimming lake, boat rentals, and a camp store; Promised Land State Park has lake swimming and boat launches but typically no individual sewer hookups (use the on-site dump station). A refundable security deposit is held separately before pickup and released back to your card after the trip, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid holdups, take time-stamped photos and a short video at pickup and drop-off, refuel to the level noted in the agreement, and empty the tanks at a dump station like the one at Keen Lake before returning. Pro tip: message your host the moment you spot anything unusual, fast communication keeps deposits flowing back smoothly.
