Campgrounds and RV parks near Wayne Heights, PA

Wayne Heights sits in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, along the eastern flank of South Mountain and within an hour's drive of a cluster of federal and state park campgrounds. The area is nestled within South Mountain, the northern terminus of the Blue Ridge, which contains four state parks and 84,000 acres of state forest land, giving RV travelers an unusually dense concentration of public campgrounds in one region. The closest options span two states. Immediately south in Maryland, Owens Creek Campground in Catoctin Mountain Park offers 48 single campsites with a maximum trailer length of 22 feet and maximum RV length of 30 feet, and neighboring Cunningham Falls State Park runs the Houck and Manor campgrounds. To the north in Pennsylvania, Chinquapin Hill at Caledonia State Park and the private Granite Hill Campground near Gettysburg round out the choices. Gettysburg National Military Park, Antietam National Battlefield, and the Appalachian Trail are all reachable as day trips, making this a practical base for families combining outdoor camping with Civil War history.

Each park uses a different reservation system. Owens Creek is federal: reservations are required, walk-ups are not accepted, and bookings can be made up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777. Cunningham Falls uses the Maryland state system, and reservations can be made online at parkreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 1-888-432-CAMP. Caledonia State Park uses Pennsylvania's system. Reservations can be made for today and up to 11 months in advance, through the state park reservation site or by phone. Granite Hill Campground takes bookings directly through its own office and website. For summer weekends and holidays, book several months out. Cancellations do open up, but a cancellation is considered late if it occurs the day before or the day of arrival, with a service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee at Owens Creek.
