Camping near West York, Pennsylvania
West York sits just west of the city of York in south-central Pennsylvania, within easy reach of the Susquehanna River, the South Mountain foothills, and the historic corridors linking Gettysburg, Lancaster, Hershey, and Baltimore. RV travelers use it as a base for York County attractions, Amish Country day trips, and Civil War battlefields, with campgrounds ranging from small in-town parks to a large lakefront state park.
Close-in options include Indian Rock Campgrounds, a small park along the York County Heritage Rail Trail that specializes in shorter RV rigs, and Ben Franklin RV Park, a family-owned park off US Route 30 with full-hookup sites for larger rigs. Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground lies northeast toward the Susquehanna, while Cedar Lake Resort offers a lake-oriented stay within a short drive.
For a public-land experience, Gifford Pinchot State Park in northern York County anchors the region with one of Pennsylvania's largest state park campgrounds on 340-acre Pinchot Lake, drawing families for swimming, boating, and fishing.
Things to do near West York
The Heritage Rail Trail County Park runs from downtown York south to the Maryland line and is directly accessible from Indian Rock Campgrounds, making it an easy option for cycling, walking, and stroller-friendly outings. In town, families visit the York County History Center and the historic Gates House and Plow Tavern tied to York's role as the seat of the Continental Congress in 1777, when the Articles of Confederation were adopted there.
At Gifford Pinchot State Park, 340-acre Pinchot Lake supports swimming, boating, and fishing in the warm season, along with an ADA-accessible swimming beach. Day trips within about an hour reach Gettysburg National Military Park, Hersheypark, and Lancaster County's Amish farmland.

The camping season in York County is shaped by Pennsylvania's state park calendar. Gifford Pinchot State Park's campground operates from mid-April through late October, so shoulder-season RV trips before mid-April or after late October must rely on year-round private parks such as Indian Rock Campgrounds and Ben Franklin RV Park.
Summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day are the busiest window. Lakeside sites at Gifford Pinchot fill quickly, and a 14 consecutive night stay limit applies between those holidays, with a 21 consecutive night limit during the rest of the camping season. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, lighter crowds, and easier same-week reservations, with fall foliage in October a strong draw.
A multi-year shower house renovation project is underway at Gifford Pinchot beginning in 2027, and portions of the campground will be temporarily closed in phases while other loops stay open. Sites affected by the phased work are blocked in the reservation system, so any bookable date shown online is not currently impacted.

How to book a site
Gifford Pinchot State Park is reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance and must be reserved at least three days ahead of arrival, online or by calling the toll-free reservation line at 888-PA-PARKS. Reservations are required year-round, even though the campground itself operates from mid-April through late October.
Private parks handle bookings directly. Indian Rock Campgrounds, Ben Franklin RV Park, Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground, and Cedar Lake Resort take reservations by phone or through their own booking pages, and some are also listed on third-party platforms. For summer weekends and holiday stretches, booking two to three months out is a safer plan than waiting for cancellations.
What to expect on-site
Sites vary widely across the area. Ben Franklin RV Park offers 35 full-hookup sites plus 10 water-and-electric sites with 20/30/50-amp service, paved interior roads, and access for big rigs up to about 60 feet. Indian Rock Campgrounds is smaller, with roughly 40 sites offering water, electric, and sewer at 20/30-amp service, and is best suited to rigs up to about 34 to 35 feet.
At Gifford Pinchot State Park, all 289 campsites have macadam pads that fit rigs from large motorhomes down to tents. Many sites have electric hookups, 22 sites offer full connections, and the campground is divided into pet and pet-free areas. Pennsylvania state park admission and parking are free, though some activities such as boat launches and pavilions carry separate fees.
