Wind Gap camping overview
Wind Gap sits on the southern edge of the Pocono Mountains in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, where the Appalachian Trail crosses Blue Mountain at the PA 33 corridor. The borough is a common jumping-off point for the Poconos and puts RV travellers within a short drive of the Lehigh Valley and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which protects roughly 40 miles of the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Private campgrounds in the surrounding area range from lake-oriented family parks to full-hookup RV sites tucked into wooded terrain at the base of Blue Mountain. Evergreen Lake Campground in nearby Bath, established in 1965, sits on a 300-acre property with roughly 250 wooded sites and a 25-acre spring-fed lake. Silver Valley Campsites, Camp Charles Campgrounds, and Hickory Lake Campground round out the closer options, while Pocono Vacation Park sits just outside Stroudsburg.
Elevations in the immediate area run roughly 500 to 1,200 feet, so summer nights tend to be noticeably cooler than in the Lehigh Valley cities to the south.
Things to do near Wind Gap
Hiking dominates the outdoor calendar. The Appalachian Trail crossing at Wind Gap gives direct access to ridge walks along Blue Mountain, with the point-to-point stretch from Wind Gap to the Delaware Water Gap rated moderately challenging and popular with backpackers. The AT parking area near the PA 33 bridge fills quickly on fair-weather weekends.
On the water, the Delaware River offers paddling, fishing, and swimming inside the national recreation area, with public beaches including Smithfield and Milford staffed by lifeguards in season. Anglers can also fish the stocked lake at Evergreen Lake Campground for trout, bass, catfish, and sunfish, with no state licence required on-property.
Families staying at Pocono Vacation Park have access to on-site recreation, and Bushkill Falls and Raymondskill Falls, the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania, are both within reasonable driving distance.

Most private campgrounds near Wind Gap operate seasonally, typically opening in mid-April and closing in mid-October. Evergreen Lake Campground, for example, runs from about April 15 through October 15. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day and again during autumn foliage weekends, when sites at the lake-based parks fill first. Reservations well in advance are strongly recommended for summer weekends and holiday periods.
Spring is wet. March and April bring long-duration light rain and occasional late snow along the ridges, and campfires are restricted along stretches of the AT corridor where camping is permitted only at designated sites. Summer is warm and humid in the valley, but ridge campgrounds run cooler, with nighttime lows dipping into the 50s Fahrenheit even in July.
Fall brings the region's most reliable weather and heavy AT traffic. Frost typically arrives on the ridge by mid-October, which affects tent campers and unheated cabins. Winter camping is limited, since snow and freezing rain can close roads in the Poconos.

Great weekend getaway!
Kami A. - Nov 2024
Great vehicle and friendly owners. This compact camper has a lot of creature comforts while allowing one to maneuver and park in regular parking lots. The van is really easy to drive and handles really nice. The beds were comfortable and IMO accommodate 2 adults (top bed) and 1 adult or 2 kids in the lower bed. We were able to use the bike rack, too, and that worked great for a road bike and mountain bike (I think 2 mountain bikes might not fit unless the handle bars were turned on 1 of them). We didn't use the, generator, heater, hot water, shower, sink, microwave or toilet so I can't comment on them but I wish we rented it longer so we could've taken advantage of all this van has to offer. We would absolutely rent again.

Great holiday weekend in Dalton's camper! He was an amazing host, and everything was as described. We had the camper delivered and picked up by Mike, who was also awesome! Thanks for a great weekend!
Stephanie H. - Sep 2026
Dalton's Jayco is the perfect option for a small family. There's plenty of sleeping options for the kids, and the tub is a great bonus for bath time. The camper is well maintained and everything was functional. Delivery and pick up to the site went smoothly. We're hoping it's available next year too!

How to book a campsite near Wind Gap
Private campgrounds around Wind Gap take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Pocono Vacation Park handles booking through its office and offers full hookup, water and electric, and seasonal sites. Evergreen Lake Campground books directly with the property and often sells out summer weekends months ahead. Silver Valley Campsites, Camp Charles Campgrounds, and Hickory Lake Campground follow the same direct-booking pattern.
For public land, developed and river campsites inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area are reserved through Recreation.gov, where bookings typically open several months ahead. Riverside primitive sites are paddler-only, are limited to one night per zone, and are booked through a zone reservation system on Recreation.gov.
Backpacker camping along the AT near Wind Gap is restricted to designated shelters and campsites, with no dispersed camping allowed.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the ridge campgrounds are paved but narrow, and some of the private parks sit on winding back roads off PA 33, US 209, or SR-512. Larger rigs should confirm site length and turning access before booking, particularly at wooded properties where tree canopy limits maneuvering. Cell coverage is generally reliable along PA 33 and thins out inside the national recreation area.
Expect standard Pocono amenities at the private parks: picnic tables, fire rings, camp stores, and playgrounds. Full hookups are common but not universal; water may be shut off shoulder-season at some campgrounds even when sewer and electric remain available.
Black bears are present throughout the region, so food and trash must be secured. Firewood must be purchased locally or brought in as heat-treated certified bundles, since bringing outside firewood into Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is prohibited.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Wind Gap, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Wind Gap, PA?
RV rental in Wind Gap is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Poconos and Delaware Water Gap region. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $275 per night, and Class A motorhomes running $250 to $400 per night. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can score a cheap RV rental in Wind Gap by booking midweek, traveling in the late April or early November shoulder season, or filtering for travel trailers if you already have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: bundle multiple nights to unlock weekly discounts many local hosts offer, and you'll stretch your Pocono budget even further.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wind%20Gap%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Wind Gap, Pennsylvania?
Good news: a regular Class C driver's license is all you need to drive virtually every RV listed on RVezy in Wind Gap. Pennsylvania only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and almost no rental on the platform comes close to that threshold. You must be 25 or older to book, and ID verification happens right in the RVezy app, so there's no DMV trip required. Visiting from overseas? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before your flight and you're ready for your Pocono RV trip.
pa.gov/agencies/penndot/driver-vehicle-services/driver-services/drivers-license/non-commercial-drivers-license.htmlWhat protection comes with my RVezy rental in Wind Gap?
Every RV rental in Wind Gap booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Pocono backroads with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you (not the host) choose your coverage level inside the booking flow, picking the option that matches your comfort level and budget. Coverage levels vary, so review the details before you confirm. That means if you tap a low-hanging branch on Route 191 or scuff a step at Driftstone Campground, you're not on the hook for the full repair bill.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Wind Gap RV rental?
You're not locked in the moment you book. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is when you cancel. The policy is standardized across the platform, so you won't see different cancellation terms on different Wind Gap listings. If your host cancels, RVezy will help you secure a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in your favorite rig, and reach out to RVezy support right away if your plans change, so they can walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Wind Gap?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental in Wind Gap that allows dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you're on the road, the area is a dog-lover's paradise: leashed pups are welcome on most trails inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, including the climb to Mount Tammany and the boardwalk at Raymondskill Falls. Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center, just 15 minutes south, has miles of shaded creek-side paths perfect for a midday leg-stretcher. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and breed/size rules so check-in is seamless.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Wind Gap?
Yes, RV delivery in Wind Gap is one of the most popular ways to book, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig down Route 33. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome rental in Wind Gap directly to nearby parks like Delaware Water Gap/Pocono Mountain KOA, Driftstone on the Delaware, or Mountain Vista Campground, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Just use the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination address to see hosts who serve your spot. Pro tip: delivery fees usually scale with distance, so picking a campground within 30 to 40 miles of Wind Gap keeps costs lowest.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/developed-campgrounds.htmHow far can I travel on a Wind Gap RV trip, and is there unlimited mileage?
You've got plenty of road to roam. Most hosts in the area include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer add-on mileage packages or even an RV rental with unlimited mileage option, perfect for a longer Wind Gap RV trip. From Wind Gap you can reach Jim Thorpe in about 45 minutes, the Catskills in roughly 2 hours, Cape May beaches in 3 hours, and Niagara Falls in around 6 hours. Even Acadia National Park in Maine is a doable multi-day haul. Pro tip: check the mileage policy on each listing before booking, and if you're planning a big loop, message the host about an unlimited add-on, it's often cheaper than paying per-mile overages.
fhwa.dot.gov/trip-planning/What are the best campgrounds near Wind Gap, PA for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Wind Gap. Top picks within a short drive include Driftstone on the Delaware (riverfront sites with water and electric, about 20 minutes north), Delaware Water Gap/Pocono Mountain KOA in East Stroudsburg (full hookups, pool, mini-golf), Mountain Vista Campground near East Stroudsburg (shaded sites, family-friendly), Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia, NJ (home to the famous Lakota Wolf Preserve), and Worthington State Forest Campground inside Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (rustic riverside sites, no hookups). Pro tip: Driftstone sits on a quiet bend of the Delaware River and is one of the most scenic spots in the region, book early for summer weekends.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/developed-campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Wind Gap?
The sweet spot for an RV trip from Wind Gap is mid-May through mid-October, when daytime highs sit between 68°F and 83°F and the Pocono nights cool into the comfortable 50s and 60s. Late September and early October are arguably the most magical, that's peak fall foliage in the Kittatinny Ridge and along the Delaware River, with crisp blue-sky days perfect for hiking. Summer weekends are lively and best booked weeks ahead. Winter rentals are possible for adventurous travelers (think snowshoeing near Camelback), and many local hosts can prep their rigs with heated tanks and shore-power hookups. Pro tip: target the first two weekends of October for the best leaf-peeping color.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Wind Gap?
Yes, and you're far from alone, first time renting an RV is one of the most common scenarios in the Poconos. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, leveling, awnings, water, propane, and the toilet system, and you can text or call them anytime during your trip. Wind Gap itself sits just off PA Route 33, a wide, modern four-lane that's easy to navigate, and back roads like Route 512 toward Bangor are gentle and scenic. If the idea of driving still feels big, just filter for Delivery and let the host bring the RV to you. Pro tip: do a slow loop around the Wind Gap Park & Ride before hitting the highway to build confidence.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking in Wind Gap includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is just a phone call away whether you've got a flat on Route 209, a dead battery at Worthington State Forest, or a tow situation along I-80. Your host is also your first lifeline for quirks specific to their rig, like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip through the app. Pro tip: save the host's contact info and the RVezy support number before you leave pickup, so it's handy even when cell service dips in the Poconos.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Wind Gap RV rental into other states or across the Canadian border?
Yes, road-tripping out of state is part of the fun. From Wind Gap you can easily cross into New Jersey (just 15 minutes east over the Delaware), New York's Catskills, or south to Maryland's Assateague Island. A popular RV road trip from Wind Gap runs north through the Finger Lakes to Niagara Falls and into Ontario, Canada, which many hosts allow as long as you let them know in advance for insurance purposes. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan doesn't extend there. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm cross-border travel so your Canadian leg is squared away from day one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for a Wind Gap RV trip?
Budgeting for fuel is easier than you'd think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get roughly 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A rigs sit around 7 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but cut your tow vehicle's MPG by about 25 to 30 percent. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and Wind Gap has convenient fill-ups at the Sunoco and Turkey Hill on PA Route 512. For a 200-mile weekend loop through the Delaware Water Gap, plan on $60 to $120 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: fill up in nearby Bangor or Stroudsburg, where prices often beat highway exits along I-80.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wind Gap?
For the best campgrounds near Wind Gap, book as early as you can, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage season. Worthington State Forest Campground in New Jersey and other regional sites are reservable through Recreation.gov or state systems several months ahead, and Pennsylvania State Parks like Hickory Run open bookings up to 11 months out via the state's online reservation system. Private parks like Driftstone on the Delaware and the Delaware Water Gap KOA typically fill 2 to 4 months ahead for July and October weekends. Pro tip: if you're flexible, target a Sunday-through-Thursday stay, you'll often walk in with no reservation at all and have your pick of riverfront sites.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Wind Gap?
Driving an RV around Wind Gap is refreshingly manageable. The town sits right at the namesake gap in the Blue Mountain ridge, with PA Route 33 (a four-lane divided highway) running north-south as your main artery to I-80 and the Poconos. Expect rolling hills, a few steep grades on Route 191 toward Mount Pocono, and the occasional narrow covered-bridge detour, none of which are a problem for standard RVs. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, sudden afternoon thunderstorms in summer, and snow squalls between December and March. Pro tip: avoid the Lehigh Tunnel on the Northeast Extension if you're in a tall Class A, take Route 33 to I-80 instead for a stress-free climb out of the Lehigh Valley.
511pa.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Wind Gap?
Campgrounds around Wind Gap range from full-service resorts to rustic state and national park sites, so there's a fit for every comfort level. Private parks like the Delaware Water Gap KOA and Mountain Vista offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, laundry, and camp stores. State and national park options like Worthington State Forest and Hickory Run State Park provide vault or flush toilets and potable water spigots, but most have no hookups, so you'll rely on your RV's fresh tank and house battery. Dump stations are available at most KOAs and at Hickory Run. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks before heading into Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, services inside the park are limited.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/HickoryRunStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhat's typically included inside a Wind Gap RV rental?
You're getting a fully equipped home on wheels. Most RVs on RVezy in Wind Gap come standard with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks (so a Class C easily sleeps a family of 5 or 6), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink and cookware, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace, and DOT-rated seatbelts for every traveler. Many include a TV, outdoor speakers, awning, generator or solar, and even starter kits with bedding and towels. Campervan rental Wind Gap options keep things simpler with a bed, cooler or fridge, and small galley, perfect for couples. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities tab before booking so you know exactly what's included and what to bring.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options do Wind Gap hosts typically offer?

Pickup is normally at the host's driveway just outside Wind Gap, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary by listing but commonly land between 100 and 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a propane fill at booking, you'll arrive at Driftstone or the KOA to a fully primed RV with zero setup stress.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/directions.htmHow does the security deposit and payment work for a Wind Gap RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, no cash, no awkward driveway handoffs. You'll pay for your booking with a credit or debit card through RVezy, and a refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is held separately a few days before pickup. As long as you return the RV in the agreed-upon condition with the right fuel and tank levels, the deposit is released back to you shortly after your trip wraps. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with your host at pickup and dropoff in Wind Gap, it's the easiest way to keep your deposit return fast and friction-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Wind Gap, PA?
Wind Gap is a launchpad to some of the Northeast's best RV destinations. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is just 20 minutes north for hiking Mount Tammany and paddling the Delaware. Jim Thorpe, the 'Switzerland of America,' is 45 minutes west for Victorian charm and Lehigh Gorge rail-biking. Hickory Run State Park and its famous Boulder Field sit about 1 hour northwest. Cape May, NJ beaches are 3 hours south, the Finger Lakes wine country is 4 hours northwest, and Niagara Falls is roughly 6 hours via I-81. Pro tip: for a perfect long-weekend RV road trip from Wind Gap, loop north through Jim Thorpe, Hickory Run, and Delaware Water Gap, three very different landscapes in under 150 miles.
