Camping near Yorklyn, Pennsylvania
Yorklyn is a small census-designated place in Springettsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, sitting just east of the city of York in the Susquehanna Valley. The wider area is served by a mix of state park facilities and private camping resorts, with Gifford Pinchot State Park located northwest of York and Codorus State Park situated southwest near Hanover, both offering waterfront access. That makes Yorklyn a practical base for RV travelers who want quick access to south-central Pennsylvania attractions including York, Lancaster, and Hershey.
Campgrounds close to Yorklyn range from riverside quarry sites to full-service resort parks. Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground and Indian Rock Campgrounds sit closest, while Hershey Road Campground, Ben Franklin RV Park, and the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday extend options toward the Hershey and Lancaster corridors. The region includes several privately operated campgrounds that cater to both short-term visitors and seasonal campers.
Most sites in the area accommodate travel trailers and motorhomes with electric and water hookups, and larger private resorts add pools, playgrounds, and organized activities aimed at families.
Things to do around Yorklyn
Day trips from a Yorklyn base cover a lot of ground. Hershey's Chocolate World, the AACA Museum in Hershey, and Amish country in Lancaster are all within a short drive, and Gettysburg National Military Park lies to the southwest. Downtown York offers the Colonial Complex, the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, and a growing craft brewery scene.
On-water recreation is a draw for families. Fishing, swimming, and boating are available at both Gifford Pinchot and Codorus State Parks. Both parks have beach areas, boat launches, and trail networks suitable for kids and casual hikers.
At the private resorts, expect the usual family amenities. The Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday and similar parks offer pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities. The Susquehanna River corridor also supports kayaking and shoreline birding within a short drive of Bainbridge.

South-central Pennsylvania has a humid continental climate that shapes the local camping calendar. Summers are warm and humid, winters are cold, and precipitation is spread relatively evenly throughout the year, though winter tends to be the driest season. Peak camping runs late spring through early fall, with July and August the busiest months for family travel around Hershey and Lancaster.
Many private campgrounds in the York area operate seasonally, typically opening in April and closing in late October or early November, though some, including Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground, operate year round. Reservations are strongly recommended for weekend stays during summer months, when waterfront sites fill quickly. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book earliest.
Spring and fall are quieter shoulder seasons with milder temperatures and better site availability. Fall foliage across the Susquehanna Valley typically peaks in mid to late October, and cooler nights mean fewer bugs and easier walk-in availability at private RV parks.

How to book a campground
For state park campgrounds like Gifford Pinchot and Codorus, reservations go through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system, which allows booking up to 11 months in advance of the arrival date. Popular waterfront and electric sites at both parks are typically claimed months ahead for summer weekends, so booking early is the safest approach.
Private parks near Yorklyn, including Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground, Indian Rock Campgrounds, Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday, Ben Franklin RV Park, and Hershey Road Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Book early during peak seasons and confirm amenities beforehand.
When reserving an RV site, confirm rig-length limits, hookup type (electric only versus full hookup), and pet and generator rules. Weekend minimum-stay requirements are common in July and August.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the campgrounds around Yorklyn run through farmland and small towns, and most private parks sit on paved or well-graded gravel access roads suitable for larger RVs. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the US-30 and I-83 corridors and weaker in the wooded pockets near the Susquehanna.
Facilities at the private parks tend to be family-oriented, with clean shower buildings, electric hookups, and in many cases swimming pools. State park loops at Gifford Pinchot and Codorus are more rustic, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites and centralized shower buildings.
Summers bring humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, and mosquitoes, so bring shade, bug spray, and a plan for indoor day trips when storms roll through. Campers are urged to buy firewood locally to help reduce the spread of tree pests.
