There are few better places to get outdoors than the Sunshine State. With sundrenched barrier islands overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, subtropical swamps in the Everglades, and a fascinating array of flora and fauna throughout the state, Florida offers adventures you won't find anywhere else.

If you're looking to step off the beaten track and discover the best of Florida's wilderness, spend a few days at the Everglades National Park. The biggest subtropical wilderness in the country, the Everglades encompasses over 1.5 million acres of lush wetlands, forests, and marshes. One unique way of seeing the Everglades is on an airboat. Glide across the region's swamps while keeping an eye out for elusive critters like manatees, alligators, and Florida panthers. Despite the vast area it covers, Everglades National Park is less than an hour from downtown Miami and some of the best RV campgrounds in Florida — perfect for those looking to mix the big city with the great outdoors.

Campers searching for an epic wilderness adventure closer to Tampa and Orlando should check out the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park. One of the few remaining dry prairie ecosystems in the state, this park is superb for hiking and birdwatching, with rare species like grasshopper sparrows, swallow-tailed kites, and burrowing owls frequenting the area. Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park is also one of the only parks in the state recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association, making it ideal for a night of stargazing from your campervan.

Alternatively, head north towards Jacksonville and escape civilization at Ocala National Forest. The second-largest national forest in the US, Ocala National Forest boasts over 600 rivers and lakes making it ideal for water sports, including kayaking, swimming, and even snorkeling. Ocala National Forest is also excellent for RVers, with several year-round campgrounds within two hours of major cities like Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tampa.

But what about Florida's iconic beaches? Anybody planning an RV rental along the Florida Panhandle should swing by the beaches at Henderson Beach State Park near Destin. Or, take a short detour from Tampa to Sarasota and check out Siesta Key. These beaches are renowned for their dazzling white sand made primarily from Appalachian quartz. Miami's South Beach is also great for campers looking to catch some rays during the day and party through the night.
