Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Lumby, BC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lumby, BC?
Great news: an RV rental in Lumby, BC is one of the most affordable ways to explore the North Okanagan and Monashee Mountains. Most travel trailers in the Lumby area run roughly $100 to $180 CAD per night, while Class C motorhomes typically range from $200 to $325 CAD per night, with larger Class A rigs going higher in peak summer. To save, book midweek, travel in the shoulder months of May, June, or September, and look for hosts offering multi-night discounts. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book to lock in your dates fast for Lumby Days in early June, when prices climb across the valley.
destinationbc.ca/things-to-do/regions-cities/thompson-okanagan/What licence do I need to rent an RV in Lumby, BC?
You're in luck: for most RV rentals in Lumby a regular Class 5 BC driver's licence is all you need, with no special endorsement required. Visiting from another province, a US state, or overseas? Your home licence is valid in British Columbia for up to six months, so just bring it along (an International Driving Permit is a smart add-on for non-English licences). All RVezy guests must be 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform. One exception: if you're renting a large diesel Class A with air brakes or towing a trailer over 4,600 kg fully loaded, additional endorsements apply. Most Lumby-area rentals are travel trailers and Class C motorhomes that fall well under that line.
icbc.com/driver-licensing/types-licences/Towing-a-recreational-trailerIs my RV rental in Lumby protected if something goes wrong?
Absolutely, and that peace of mind is built right in. Every RVezy booking in Lumby includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered for eligible damages to the vehicle and never stranded on Highway 6 or Mabel Lake Road. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip (hosts do not set this, you do), so you can tailor coverage to your comfort. Combined with the host's pickup orientation, you will head into the Monashee foothills feeling confident. Pro tip: save RVezy's support contact in your phone before you head toward Mabel Lake, since cell coverage drops off past Lumby village.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Lumby RV trip?
Booking your Lumby RV trip is low risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, which includes a money-back grace period shortly after you book. The refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel, and RVezy support can help when circumstances like wildfires or evacuation orders affect travel in the BC Interior. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you are not left without options. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Mabel Lake weekend, and contact RVezy support right away if plans change. Full cancellation policy details are on the RVezy Help Center.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lumby RV trip?
Yes, Lumby is genuinely dog country, and a pet-friendly RV rental in Lumby is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search. Many hosts welcome dogs for a small cleaning fee, and your pup will love the Salmon Trail network along the creek beds right in the village. Mabel Lake Provincial Park allows leashed pets on trails and beaches outside of designated swim areas, and the wide-open Monashee logging roads east of town are a paradise for sniff walks. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details, and pack a tick check kit since the North Okanagan grasslands have them in spring.
bcparks.ca/mabel-lake-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in the Lumby area?
Yes, RV delivery in Lumby is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game changer for first timers. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental in Lumby directly at Mabel Lake Provincial Park, Echo Lake Fishing Resort, Lumby Lions Campground, or a private property in Cherryville. They will level the rig, hook up water and power if available, and walk you through every system before leaving. Delivery fees are typically charged per kilometre from the host's location. Pro tip: delivery is a smart pick if you are flying into Kelowna International Airport (YLW) about 75 km away and want to skip driving an unfamiliar RV up Highway 97.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lumby%2C%20British%20ColumbiaHow far can I drive on a Lumby RV trip?
You have a huge playground from Lumby, and mileage works in your favour. Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy, with many offering 100 to 200 km per day included and some offering an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer loops. Realistic distances from Lumby: Mabel Lake Provincial Park (about 36 km), Silver Star Mountain Resort (about 50 km), Kelowna (about 75 km), Revelstoke (about 150 km), Banff National Park (about 545 km), and Jasper (about 600 km). Pro tip: if you are planning a Kootenays loop through Nakusp and the hot springs, choose a listing with unlimited or high daily mileage to avoid overage fees on scenic detours.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lumby%2C%20British%20ColumbiaWhere are the best campgrounds near Lumby, BC?
You are spoiled for choice with the best campgrounds near Lumby. Top picks include Mabel Lake Provincial Park (reservable sites, sandy beaches, sani-station, about 36 km north of Lumby), Echo Lake Fishing Resort on Creighton Valley Road (full-service sites with showers, great for families), Lumby Lions Campground right in the village (walkable to coffee and groceries), Shuswap Falls RV Resort along the Shuswap River, and Cherryville's Gold Panner Campground about 20 minutes east. Pro tip: book Mabel Lake through the BC Parks Discover Camping system, which opens reservations several months in advance and sells out fast for July and August weekends.
bcparks.ca/mabel-lake-park/When is the best time to rent an RV in Lumby, BC?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Lumby is mid-May through late September, when daytime highs sit between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius and Mabel Lake warms up enough for swimming. July and August are peak with highs around 25 C and the most sunshine, while June can still be cool and slightly wet in this humid-continental valley. September is a local insider favourite: warm days, cool nights perfect for campfires, fewer bugs, and easier campsite availability. Winter rentals are possible for skiers heading to Silver Star Mountain Resort, just confirm the RV is winterized. Pro tip: aim for the second half of August for the warmest lake swims and the area's lowest rainfall.
weather.gc.ca/en/location/index.html?coords=50.25%2C-118.967I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Lumby?
You'll do great, especially in the Lumby area where the roads are wide, traffic is light, and most rentals are easy-to-drive Class C motorhomes or travel trailers. Your host gives a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, the dump valves, and driving tips before you leave. Highway 6 from Vernon into Lumby is gentle two-lane pavement, and once you're in town the village is calm and RV-friendly. If you're nervous about your first time renting an RV, pick the delivery option so the host parks and sets up for you. Pro tip: practice a couple of turns in the Charles Bloom Secondary School parking lot before heading up to Mabel Lake Road.
icbc.com/driver-licensing/driving-guidesWhat happens if the RV breaks down on my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on Creighton Valley Road or a dead battery at Echo Lake is one phone call away from help. The dispatch team can send a tow, a tire change, fuel delivery, or a lockout service to your location anywhere in BC. Your host is also typically just a text away for quick questions about the rig's quirks. Pro tip: snap photos of the propane shutoff, breaker panel, and tire pressures during your walkthrough so you can quickly send them to support if you need help diagnosing something near Mabel Lake.
www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/driving-and-cycling/traveller-information/currentCan I take my Lumby RV rental into Alberta or across the US border?
Cross-border road trips from Lumby are absolutely doable, and they're one of the best ways to make the most of your RV. Interprovincial travel into Alberta (Banff is about 470 km east) is welcome on most RVezy listings, but a US trip down through Washington or Idaho usually requires host approval and confirmation of insurance coverage, so message the host from the listing page before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. A great RV road trip from Lumby is the Powder Highway loop through Revelstoke, Golden, and Nakusp Hot Springs, all reachable without leaving BC. Pro tip: if you do cross into the US, bring your passport, vehicle registration, and the host's authorization letter.
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlHow much will fuel cost on my Lumby RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it's manageable. Expect roughly 18 to 25 litres per 100 km for most Class C motorhomes and 14 to 18 L/100 km for travel trailers pulled by a half-ton truck. Gas in Lumby and Vernon typically runs a bit cheaper than Kelowna or Vancouver thanks to lower Interior taxes; check current pump prices before you fill up. Fill up at the Lumby Petro-Canada or Esso before heading up Mabel Lake Road, because there's no fuel at the lake. Pro tip: a 300 km weekend loop to Mabel Lake and back to Silver Star will typically use $80 to $120 in gas for a Class C, so budget accordingly.
www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/sales-taxes/motor-fuel-carbon-taxHow far in advance should I book a campground near Lumby?
Plan ahead and you'll get exactly the site you want. Mabel Lake Provincial Park is 100% reservable from April through mid-October and opens its booking window several months in advance through BC Parks' Discover Camping system at camping.bcparks.ca; July and August weekends sell out within hours. Private parks like Echo Lake Fishing Resort and Shuswap Falls RV Resort typically open winter bookings for the following summer and are easier to grab. For shoulder-season trips in May or September, two to four weeks is usually enough. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the BC Parks booking window opening, then have a backup Cherryville site lined up just in case.
camping.bcparks.ca/What are the driving conditions like around Lumby?
Driving conditions in and around Lumby are friendly, especially compared to mountain passes elsewhere in BC. Highway 6 from Vernon to Lumby is paved, gently rolling, and easy in any RV. Mabel Lake Road has 36 km of pavement plus a 1 km gravel stretch into the park, which is fine for most rigs taken slowly. In winter, Highway 6 east toward the Monashee Pass to Cherryville and Needles requires winter tires (mandatory October 1 to April 30 in BC) and the road can be snowy. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and the occasional moose near Mabel Lake. Pro tip: download the DriveBC app to check road conditions before heading toward the Kootenays.
drivebc.ca/What amenities do campgrounds near Lumby offer for RVs?
You'll find a good mix. Echo Lake Fishing Resort and Shuswap Falls RV Resort offer full hookups (power, water, sewer) plus showers and laundry, ideal if you want the comforts. Mabel Lake Provincial Park has no hookups but provides flush toilets, drinking water taps, and a sani-station for $5 per discharge, perfect for dry camping with a swim-up beach. Lumby Lions Campground in the village has limited power and water. For dumping and fresh water on the way out, the Mabel Lake sani-station is the closest official option. Pro tip: top up fresh water in Lumby village before heading to Mabel Lake, and bring cash since the park is cash-only for first-come sites.
bcparks.ca/mabel-lake-park/What's actually included inside the RV I rent in Lumby?
Most RVs on RVezy come ready to roll. Expect a queen or king bed plus bunks or convertible dinettes (sleeping anywhere from 2 to 8), a propane stove, fridge, microwave, full bathroom with shower and toilet, furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many Lumby-area listings also include a generator for off-grid stays at Mabel Lake, an outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a basic kitchen kit. Wi-Fi and TVs are less common but some hosts add them. Each listing page shows exactly what's included. Pro tip: filter for a generator if you're staying at Mabel Lake Provincial Park, since there's no shore power and you'll want to run the fridge and charge phones.
hellobc.com/things-to-do/camping-rving/What add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Lumby?
This is where you customize your trip. Popular add-ons from Lumby-area hosts include delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per km), kitchen kits, bedding packages, generators, bike racks, kayaks (perfect for Mabel Lake), portable propane fire pits, and pet packages. Mileage policies vary by host, with many offering 100 to 200 free kilometres per day; some offer unlimited mileage which is golden for a Kelowna-Revelstoke-Banff loop. Pickup is usually at the host's property in Lumby, Vernon, or Coldstream, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation. Pro tip: ask about a kayak or paddleboard add-on, because Mabel Lake's 35 km of shoreline is made for paddling.
hellobc.com/things-to-do/parks-trails/How does payment and the security deposit work for a Lumby RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform when you book, with no cash exchanged with the host: your card is charged for the rental, fees, and chosen protection plan. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically a few hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on the RV) and released after return assuming no damage or extra cleaning. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, take photos and videos of any existing scratches or interior wear, return the RV with the same fuel and propane level, and empty the black and grey tanks at the Mabel Lake sani-station before drop-off. Pro tip: keep your fuel and dump-station receipts, they are handy if any questions come up at return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping possible around Lumby?
Yes, and it's an underrated adventure. Lumby winters are cold (average highs around -2 to -3 C in January, lows near -10 C) with reliable snow, making it a launch pad for Silver Star Mountain Resort just 45 km away. Some RVezy hosts in the Lumby and Vernon area offer winterized RVs with heated holding tanks, propane furnaces, and skirting kits; filter your search and message hosts to confirm. Most BC Parks campgrounds including Mabel Lake close mid-October, so plan to stay at private parks that keep power on, or arrange driveway camping with delivery. Pro tip: a cheap RV rental in Lumby during shoulder-season ski weekends often beats hotel prices at Silver Star, and you wake up minutes from the chairlifts.
