Very simple to book, reserve, communicate, meet-up, operate, return, etc. I would recommend to all! Perfect size RV and amenities for what I was looking for. Family of five. We had everything we needed, with nothing too fancy that may be difficult to operate or take away from the camping experience.

Wonderful across the board. The RV was clean, drove perfectly (mountains of Colorado and New Mexico), and was impeccably organized. They have clearly thought through all the things that might be needed on a long trip and made them easily accessible. The toilet cassette was easy to empty (particularly in a latrine -- 3-5 minutes with no mess). The refrigerator and cabinets have plenty of space and beds were comfortable. It was easy to stop and sleep overnight in parks. We were really pleased and would happily rent this RV again.

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Winnetka, IL

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Winnetka, IL?

An RV rental in Winnetka is more affordable than most first-time renters expect, especially when you split costs with family or friends. On RVezy, travel trailers in the North Shore area typically start around $80 to $150 per night, while Class B campervans and Class C motorhomes generally range from $150 to $250 per night. Looking for a cheap RV rental in Winnetka? Filter by towables, book midweek, and aim for shoulder season (late April or September) to avoid peak summer Chicago festival pricing. Pro tip: many Winnetka hosts include generators, camp chairs, and kitchen kits at no extra charge, so check the listing details before adding paid extras to your booking.

What kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Winnetka?

Good news: for nearly every RV rental in Winnetka, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. Illinois only requires an upgraded non-CDL license if the motorhome's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeds 16,000 pounds, which applies mostly to large Class A coaches. The travel trailers, campervans, and Class C motorhomes most renters book on RVezy fall well under that limit. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID directly through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly into O'Hare, and you're set to roll.

Is insurance and roadside assistance included with my Winnetka RV rental?

Yes, every RV rental in Winnetka booked through RVezy comes with a built-in protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of the driveway with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle and gives you significant financial protection during your trip. You choose your coverage level during booking, not the host, so you can tailor it to your comfort. If you get a flat on the Edens Expressway or need a jump at Illinois Beach State Park, one phone call gets help dispatched. That safety net is a huge reason first-time renters feel confident hitting the road from Chicago's North Shore.

What if I need to cancel my Winnetka RV trip?

Booking an RV rental in Winnetka is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without overthinking it. If Lake Michigan weather, a Chicago travel disruption, or an unexpected natural event changes your plans, RVezy's support team is available to help walk you through your options. Pro tip: book early to secure the best North Shore inventory for summer weekends, since you have flexibility built in from the start. Full policy details are available on the RVezy website before you confirm your trip.

Can I bring my dog on a Winnetka RV rental?

Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Winnetka is easy to find on RVezy. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching listings near the 60093 ZIP code and you'll see motorhomes and trailers whose owners welcome four-legged co-pilots. Winnetka is a famously dog-loving suburb, and you'll find off-leash time at nearby Centennial Park and miles of leashed trails along the Skokie Lagoons and Green Bay Trail. Heading farther out? Illinois Beach State Park and Indiana Dunes National Park both allow leashed pets in their campgrounds. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and ask for tips on their favorite dog-friendly stops along your route.

Can the RV be delivered to me in Winnetka?

Yes, RV delivery in Winnetka is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you've never towed or driven a big rig before. Many North Shore hosts will deliver the RV straight to your driveway, a local campground like Illinois Beach State Park, or even to a Chicago-area festival site. They'll level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through the systems so you're not guessing about anything. Use the Delivery filter when browsing listings and message the host to confirm their delivery radius and fee. For first-time renters in the Chicago suburbs, this is hands-down the easiest way to start your trip.

How far can I drive on a Winnetka RV trip?

You've got a wide-open Midwest playground from Winnetka, and RV rental with unlimited mileage options does exist on RVezy if you're planning a longer loop. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small per-mile fee beyond that, which is fine for typical regional trips. From Winnetka you're 50 miles to Illinois Beach State Park, 65 miles to Indiana Dunes National Park, 165 miles to Starved Rock State Park, 220 miles to Wisconsin Dells, and about 290 miles to Mackinaw City, Michigan. Pro tip: estimate your route on Google Maps first, then filter listings by mileage policy to find the right match.

Where are the best campgrounds near Winnetka for RV camping?

You have several great options for RV camping in Winnetka and the surrounding North Shore. Illinois Beach State Park in Zion (about an hour north) offers electric sites right on Lake Michigan with sandy beach access. Camp Reinberg in Palatine is a Cook County Forest Preserve campground with paved bike trails through Deer Grove. Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin (about 35 miles west) has full hookups overlooking prairie. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo offers a resort feel with a private lake. Indiana Dunes State Park is 60 miles east and worth the drive for the dunes. Pro tip: weekday arrivals are far easier to book in summer.

When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Winnetka?

Late May through early October is prime time to rent an RV in Winnetka, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-60s in May and September up to the mid-80s°F in July and August. June offers long daylight and lake breezes; September is a local favorite because crowds thin out, mosquitoes fade, and fall color starts creeping into the forest preserves. Winters are genuinely cold along Lake Michigan (often 15 to 35°F with lake-effect snow), so most Winnetka hosts pause bookings from November through March. Local insider tip: target the second or third week of September for a Chicago RV trip; you'll catch warm days, cool nights, and reasonable campground availability at Illinois Beach State Park.

I've never rented an RV before. Will I know what to do?

You'll be in great shape, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and hookups so nothing's a mystery. You can also message the host directly from the listing before you book to ask any question, big or small. Most Winnetka-area hosts are weekend RVers themselves and love helping new renters succeed. Pro tip: start with a shorter shakedown trip to somewhere close like Chain O'Lakes State Park (50 miles) or Illinois Beach (60 miles) before tackling a longer route. You'll build confidence fast, and RVezy's 24/7 support is always a tap away.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.html

What happens if something goes wrong on the road?

Help is one phone call away, day or night. Every RV rental in Winnetka booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. Whether you're stuck on I-94 heading to Wisconsin, in the parking lot of the Chicago Botanic Garden in nearby Glencoe, or deep in Indiana Dunes National Park, dispatch can get a technician to you. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if you have questions about anything else. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so it's easy to share if you ever need to call in.

Can I take my Winnetka RV rental into Wisconsin, Indiana, or Michigan?

Yes, an RV road trip from Winnetka into neighboring states is one of the most popular routes on RVezy. Wisconsin Dells is about 220 miles north, Indiana Dunes National Park is just 65 miles east, and the Lake Michigan loop into Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a bucket-list drive. Cross-state travel is fully covered by your RVezy protection package. Travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the specific host and listing, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: confirm your route with the host and you're cleared for a true Great Lakes adventure.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/directions.htm

What kind of fuel mileage should I budget for from Winnetka?

Budgeting fuel is straightforward once you know your rig. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes usually deliver 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches sit around 7 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 20 to 30 percent dip in MPG. Gas prices in the Chicago metro tend to run higher than the national average (often $3.80 to $4.50 per gallon in 2024 and 2025), so consider filling up in Indiana or Wisconsin where prices typically drop 30 to 50 cents per gallon. Pro tip for your Winnetka RV trip: use the GasBuddy app and fuel up before crossing back into Cook County.

How far in advance should I book a campground near Winnetka?

For the best campgrounds near Winnetka, plan ahead, especially for summer weekends and holidays. Illinois state parks like Illinois Beach and Chain O'Lakes use ExploreMoreIL.com and open reservations up to six months in advance; popular Lake Michigan sites can fill within hours of release. Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds (like Camp Reinberg) book through fpdcc.com and tend to sell out 2 to 3 months ahead. Indiana Dunes and Wisconsin state parks have their own systems and similar lead times. Pro tip: if you're locked out of weekend dates, look at Sunday-through-Thursday stays. You'll find more openings, lower nightly rates, and a much quieter campground vibe along the lakefront.
camp.exploremoreil.com/

What are the local driving conditions like around Winnetka?

Winnetka itself is calm tree-lined suburb driving, but you'll want a few tips for the wider Chicago area. The Edens Expressway (I-94) and Tri-State Tollway (I-294) are the main routes out of town, and traffic stacks up weekdays from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., so plan departures outside those windows. Avoid Lower Wacker Drive and Lake Shore Drive in a tall RV; LSD has a 12-foot 6-inch height restriction in spots. Winters bring lake-effect snow and salt-coated roads from December to March. Local insider tip: many Winnetka renters choose RV delivery to skip city driving entirely and start their trip on the open highway heading north toward Wisconsin.
illinoistollway.com/

What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Winnetka?

Campgrounds around Winnetka offer a nice range of amenities depending on the park. Illinois Beach State Park has electric hookups, modern shower buildings, a dump station, and beach access; sites do not have individual water, so fill your fresh tank on arrival. Cook County Forest Preserves like Camp Reinberg offer electric sites, drinking-water spigots, and shared dump stations. Private parks like Fish Lake Beach in Volo provide full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and laundry. For dump and water fill in a pinch, Paul Wolff Forest Preserve and Love's Travel Stop along I-90 are reliable options. Pro tip: always top off fresh water before leaving the metro area, as backwoods fills can be slow.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.html

What's actually inside a typical Winnetka RV rental?

You'll be surprised how complete a modern motorhome rental in Winnetka really is. Most RVs on RVezy come with sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, a dinette, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, outdoor camp chairs, and a generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi is sometimes included via a mobile hotspot, but plan to use your phone's hotspot in remote campgrounds. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities checklist carefully, and message the host to request specific extras like bedding kits, kitchen packs, or bike racks before booking.
rvezy.com/

What add-ons and options can I add to my Winnetka RV rental?

Hosts in the Winnetka area offer plenty of popular add-ons to make your trip easier. Common extras include bedding and towel kits ($25 to $75 per trip), kitchen packs, generator hours, bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, and propane fills. Some hosts charge a small dump-and-clean fee if you'd rather skip emptying tanks; others include it free. Pickup and drop-off usually happen at the host's home in Winnetka or surrounding North Shore communities like Glencoe, Wilmette, or Northbrook, but many offer delivery for a per-mile fee. Each host sets their mileage allowance and overage rate. Pro tip: ask the host to bundle their most popular extras during booking, which often gets you a better total than adding things piecemeal.
rvezy.com/

How does payment and the security deposit work for a Winnetka RV rental?

Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform; you'll never hand cash directly to a host. When you confirm your booking, your credit card is charged for the trip plus your chosen protection plan. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid issues: do the pre-trip walkthrough carefully, snap photos of any existing scratches or dings, follow the mileage and generator policies, and return the RV with the same fuel and waste levels you got it with. Pro tip: clean up the cabin before drop-off; it speeds up your deposit refund.
