Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Schererville, IN
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Schererville, IN?
RV rental in Schererville is one of the more affordable ways to explore Northwest Indiana and the southern shore of Lake Michigan. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes from $150 to $250, and larger Class A rigs from $200 to $350. Hosts set their own nightly rates, so booking midweek or in the shoulder seasons (late April or September) is the easiest way to find a cheap RV rental in Schererville. Filter for Instant Book to skip the wait, and consider a travel trailer if you already own a tow-capable SUV or truck, which can reduce your nightly rate by 30 to 40 percent.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Schererville%2C%20IndianaDo I need a special driver's license to rent an RV in Schererville?
A standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Schererville for virtually every motorhome and trailer on RVezy. Renters must be 25 or older to book, and you'll verify your ID securely through RVezy during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can obtain from your local auto association for around $20. Hosts will confirm your license at pickup before handing over the keys.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Schererville RV rental?
Yes, and it's one of the best parts of booking through RVezy. Every RV rental in Schererville includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your booking, so you're covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level during the booking flow so you can pick the peace of mind that fits your trip. If you get a flat tire heading to Indiana Dunes or need a battery jump at your campground, one phone call gets help on the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every Schererville RV rental, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in a great rig with confidence. Refund amounts after that depend on how far out you cancel from your trip start date. Full details are available on the RVezy Help Center and in your booking confirmation. If you're eyeing a summer weekend near Indiana Dunes, book early: cancellations on the platform refresh inventory, but peak July sites go fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Schererville RV trip?
Yes. A pet-friendly RV rental in Schererville is easy to find on RVezy: toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see plenty of rigs whose owners welcome four-legged guests. Once you're on the road, Indiana Dunes State Park allows leashed dogs on most campground loops and many trails, and Indiana Dunes National Park welcomes them at Dunewood Campground and on designated pet-friendly beaches like Kemil and Lake View. Closer to home, Centennial Park in Munster has a popular off-leash dog area for a pre-trip romp. Bring a 6-foot leash (the park standard), waste bags, and your pet's vaccination records in case the campground asks.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in Schererville is one of the most popular options for first-timers and families who'd rather skip the driving. Many hosts will tow or drive your motorhome straight to your campsite at Indiana Dunes State Park, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Portage, or your home driveway in Schererville, St. John, or Crown Point. They'll level it, connect water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and their per-mile delivery fees. Delivery to a nearby campground (within 30 miles) typically runs $100 to $250 round trip, a great value compared to backing a 30-foot rig into a wooded site yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Schererville%2C%20IndianaHow far can I drive, and what does mileage cost?
You've got room to roam. Most Schererville hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips, which is perfect for an RV road trip from Schererville. For reference: Indiana Dunes National Park is about 35 miles east, Chicago is 35 miles west, Warren Dunes State Park in Michigan is roughly 70 miles northeast, Shipshewana Amish country is around 110 miles east, and Starved Rock State Park in Illinois sits about 95 miles southwest. Additional miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each, but you can avoid that fee by filtering for unlimited-mileage listings. Message your host with your planned route, they'll often bump your mileage allowance for free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Schererville%2C%20IndianaWhere are the best campgrounds near Schererville to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Schererville include Indiana Dunes State Park Campground in Chesterton (about 40 minutes east) with electric sites and a beach minutes away; Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park, with 66 wooded sites (no hookups, but modern restrooms); Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Portage, popular with families thanks to pools and mini-golf; Sand Creek Campground in Chesterton, a quiet full-hookup option; and Oak Lake Family Campground in Cedar Lake. For RV camping near Schererville with quick highway access, Lakeshore Camp Resort in Portage is a reliable pick. Book Indiana Dunes State Park six months out, it fills the day reservations open.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/indiana-dunes-state-park/When is the best time to visit Schererville in an RV?
Late May through early October is prime time for a Schererville RV trip, with July averaging highs in the low 80s and lows in the mid-60s, perfect for Lake Michigan beach days at Indiana Dunes. June and September are sweet spots: warm enough to swim, but with fewer crowds and easier campground reservations. Fall (late September to mid-October) brings golden maples along the Calumet Trail and crisp campfire nights in the 50s. Winters here are cold, with January highs near 30°F and lows around 19°F plus snow, so most campgrounds close from November through March. Book a September Indiana Dunes trip and you may catch monarch butterfly migration along the lakeshore.
weather.gov/lot/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you won't be left guessing. Every RVezy host does an in-person walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slides, awning, generator, water systems, and dump valves. They'll answer every question, and many send you off with a printed cheat sheet or video. For a first time renting an RV in the Schererville area, conditions are forgiving: the roads are flat, the highways (I-80/94, I-65, US-30) are wide and well-maintained, and you're 30 minutes from open countryside heading south. Ask for a Class C motorhome or a 20 to 24 foot travel trailer for your first trip. They drive more like a large van than a bus, and parking at Indiana Dunes State Park sites is a breeze.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down or have trouble on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you've got a flat on the Indiana Toll Road, a dead battery at Dunewood Campground, or a generator that won't start at 9 PM, one phone number gets help dispatched. Common services like tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery are covered. Your host is typically a phone call or text away for quick questions about the RV's quirks, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Schererville, and snap a photo of your RV's VIN and license plate.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV across state lines or up to Canada?
Yes. Crossing into Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, or Ohio is completely standard for an RV road trip from Schererville. The Illinois state line is only minutes west, and Michigan is about 30 miles east, so multi-state loops to Chicago, Saugatuck, and Lake Geneva are easy. Canadian travel may also be allowed depending on the host and protection plan: message your host through the listing first if you're dreaming of Niagara Falls or Toronto. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection plan does not cover it. A popular 4-day loop heads east into Michigan wine country (Saugatuck and South Haven) before circling back through the Indiana Dunes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any RV budget, but it's predictable here. Northwest Indiana gas prices typically run lower than the Illinois average thanks to lower state taxes, so fueling up in Schererville before crossing into Chicago is smart. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, and 15 to 22 MPG for a campervan or tow vehicle pulling a small trailer. For a typical 3-day Indiana Dunes trip (about 150 total miles), most renters spend $60 to $120 on gas. The Costco on Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond and the Sam's Club off US-30 in Merrillville are among the cheapest fill-ups in the region.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground?
Book early to get the pick of the litter. Indiana Dunes State Park Campground takes reservations up to six months in advance through the Indiana DNR reservation system, and summer weekends (especially July 4th and Labor Day) sell out within hours of opening. Dunewood Campground in Indiana Dunes National Park books through Recreation.gov and fills just as fast. Private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Portage and Sand Creek Campground in Chesterton are usually bookable 2 to 3 months out for prime weekends. For a spontaneous trip, aim for Sunday or Monday night arrivals: you'll find open sites even in July.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234070What are the local driving conditions like around Schererville?
Schererville is one of the easier metros to RV out of, but a few local tips help. The roads are flat, the I-80/94 corridor moves fast but carries heavy truck traffic, and rush hour northbound toward Chicago (7 to 9 AM) and southbound on the return (4 to 6 PM) is worth avoiding in a big rig. US-30 (Lincoln Highway) running through Schererville is RV-friendly with wide lanes and plenty of gas stations. Winter (December to March) can bring lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Michigan, so check the National Weather Service forecast before heading out. Take Indiana 49 north to the Dunes instead of I-94 on summer weekends, it's slower-paced and far less stressful for first-time motorhome drivers.
weather.gov/lot/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Schererville?
You'll find a strong mix of options. Indiana Dunes State Park Campground offers 50/30-amp electric hookups, water fill stations, a dump station, heated bathhouses with hot showers, a camp store, and a playground. Dunewood Campground in the National Park is more rustic with potable water and modern restrooms but no hookups, which is great for self-contained motorhomes. Private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Portage offer full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. For dumping and water fills on the road, the Pilot Travel Center in Lake Station and Love's Travel Stop off I-65 both have RV dump stations. Top off your fresh water in Schererville before heading to Dunewood, since there are no individual site hookups.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's actually inside a typical Schererville RV rental?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome rentals in Schererville come stocked with a real bed (often a queen) plus convertible dinette and sofa sleepers, a kitchen with a fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, A/C and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, and an onboard generator for off-grid power. Campervan rentals in Schererville (Class B) are more compact but include the essentials plus better fuel economy. Hosts often add kitchen kits, bedding, camp chairs, and outdoor rugs, just check the listing's amenities section. Wi-Fi isn't standard, so plan to use your phone hotspot or grab a campground Wi-Fi pass for streaming at night.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Schererville%2C%20IndianaHow does pickup, drop-off, and add-ons work?
It's flexible and built around your schedule. Most Schererville hosts offer pickup from their home (commonly in Schererville, St. John, Crown Point, Dyer, or Merrillville) with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough, while others offer RV delivery in Schererville straight to your campground. Pickup is usually 1 to 3 PM and drop-off by 11 AM, but many hosts will flex if you ask. Popular add-ons include bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and tables ($10 to $25), generators or extra propane, bike racks, and pet cleaning fees ($50 to $100). Mileage allowances vary by host, with many offering unlimited miles for trips over 3 nights. Message the host about a same-day return time bump if you're driving back from Michigan on a Sunday afternoon.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Schererville%2C%20IndianaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
It's simple and secure. You pay for your RV rental in Schererville directly through RVezy with a credit card during checkout: no cash, no Venmo, and no awkward driveway transactions. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is placed as an authorization hold on your card before your trip rather than charged outright, and it's released after your return assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick walkaround with photos at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the same fuel and propane level, and empty the tanks at a dump station if the host requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Schererville during winter?
Yes, and winter rentals can be a hidden gem. Some Schererville hosts keep their motorhomes available year-round for winter getaways, ice fishing trips on Cedar Lake, or simply lower nightly rates from November through March. The key is choosing the right rig: look for RVs listed with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, a working furnace, and shore-power capability so you can plug in at any winterized campground (Sand Creek Campground in Chesterton and a handful of Porter County parks stay open). Message the host before booking to confirm cold-weather readiness. Skip dry camping below 25°F (water lines freeze fast in Northwest Indiana), book a full-hookup site, and you'll have a cozy winter base camp 35 miles from Chicago.
