My wife and I both want to thank Juan for making the start of our camper trip great. Juan met with us and introduced himself, he had the camper already set up for preview and gave us a detailed tour of the camper, including sanitation, and instrumentation. We then went over the paperwork and everything went smoothly. I can honestly say it was a pleasure dealing with Juan. Our trip in itself was great as we took off to see Americana covering from Florida to Iowa and back. It was beautiful country, and the people were very pleasant. Just to see those beautiful cornfields for miles in rows humble you. God bless our farmers. The camper itself ran smoothly with no mechanical failures or concerns. The vehicle is well maintained. Now for the negative. I may have lost or had stolen off the vehicle three hubcaps. Lesson learned: equipment security is important and a check should be done periodically. When checking tires make sure you hubcaps are there. My overall evaluation is that I would gladly do business with Juan again. I know I could count on him and His Sunseeker camper. Thanks again Juan We appreciate you.

What a great host! Jerry was the man! He is such a nice nice fella. He went above and beyond. The world would be such a better place if more people tried a little harder to go a little more out of their way to make people stay great. The trailer worked great. The AC was cold and I appreciated that as it was out. At the end, Jerry is a top-notch fella and I hope that you contact him and ask him how your website can be better and offering better service. He’s an older fella and you young pups on the Internet need to learn something from the old timers.!!!!!

Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Urbandale, Iowa?

Good news: a standard Class C (regular) Iowa driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Urbandale, Iowa, and out-of-state and Canadian licenses work the same way. Iowa law does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for motorhomes or trailers used recreationally, so you can drive a Class A, Class C, campervan, or fifth wheel with the license already in your wallet. You'll just need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right in the app before pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're set to roll.

When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Urbandale?

Late April through mid-October is prime time for an Urbandale RV trip, with the sweet spot from June through early September when daytime highs typically sit in the upper 70s to mid 80s F and Iowa's lakes are warm enough to swim. Spring brings wildflowers at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge but also thunderstorms, while fall delivers crisp 60 to 70 F afternoons and great color along the Raccoon River Valley Trail. Most Iowa state park shower buildings and dump stations are open roughly May 1 through mid-October. Tip: aim for late September after Labor Day for warm days, smaller crowds, and a perfectly timed visit to Madison County's covered bridges.

Is winter RV camping in Urbandale possible?

Yes, winter RV trips around Urbandale are doable for those who love quiet trails and frozen-lake sunsets. Walnut Woods State Park accepts campground reservations year-round, and select private parks like Timberline keep some sites open. Most Iowa state park water hookups and shower buildings shut down from roughly November 1 through April 15, so look for RVezy listings with heated tanks, enclosed underbellies, and a working furnace, and plan to fill fresh water before you leave Urbandale. Tip: ask your host about cold-weather prep during the walkthrough, pack extra propane, and pair the trip with holiday lights and ice skating around the Des Moines metro.

First time renting an RV? You are in great shape starting from Urbandale. If you are nervous about backing in or driving through downtown Des Moines, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Urbandale, or book a host who offers delivery so the rig is parked and leveled when you arrive. Confidence builds fast once you are rolling.

Can I take my Urbandale RV rental across state lines or into Canada?

Interstate road trips are not just allowed, they are encouraged. From Urbandale you can easily cross into Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, and South Dakota with your RV rental. Travel into Canada may be possible with some hosts, but message the host before booking to confirm and to make sure protection coverage applies for cross-border travel. One firm rule across RVezy: travel into Mexico is not permitted because insurance coverage does not extend south of the border. Popular cross-state runs include the Badlands (about 9 hours west) and Wisconsin Dells (about 5 hours northeast).

What kind of fuel mileage should I budget for an Iowa RV trip?

Iowa's flat-to-rolling terrain is friendly to your fuel tank, which keeps the budget realistic. Expect roughly 7 to 10 MPG for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for a campervan (Class B), and 10 to 15 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer or fifth wheel. Gas prices in the Des Moines metro typically run a bit below the national average, with cheaper fill-ups at Costco in Clive and Casey's locations across town. Tip: drive 60 to 62 mph on I-80, use cruise control, and plan fuel stops in advance to save 10 to 15 percent on a week-long Urbandale RV trip.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/

How far in advance should I book a campsite near Urbandale?

Booking ahead is the single best move for a smooth Iowa RV trip. Iowa state parks (including Walnut Woods and Ledges) take reservations up to 3 months in advance through the Iowa DNR reservation portal, and weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill quickly. Saylorville Lake's Cherry Glen and Prairie Flower campgrounds are booked through Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window. Private parks like Timberline and Des Moines West KOA accept reservations even earlier. Tip: for Iowa State Fair week in mid-August or RAGBRAI overnight towns, book the moment your window opens.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2733

What are local driving conditions like around Urbandale?

Driving an RV around Urbandale is about as low-stress as Midwest road trips get. Most of the metro features wide lanes, gentle grades, and easy interstate access via I-35, I-80, and I-235, with 65 to 70 mph speed limits on the interstates. Watch for summer thunderstorms with high winds (pull off at a rest stop until they pass) and occasional tornado watches in spring; the National Weather Service Des Moines office posts real-time alerts. Avoid taking large Class A rigs through downtown Des Moines at rush hour, instead loop around on I-80 and I-35. Tip: the Mixmaster interchange (I-235/I-35/I-80) is best avoided 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.
weather.gov/dmx/

What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Urbandale?

Central Iowa campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Most full-service sites at Timberline and Des Moines West KOA offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, while Saylorville Lake and Jester Park typically offer electric with shared water fill and dump stations. Modern shower houses, flush toilets, and dump stations are standard from May through mid-October. Walnut Woods State Park has paved pull-throughs and year-round electric. Most state park dump stations are free for registered campers, and many Casey's and Love's travel centers along I-80 also offer dump and water services. Tip: download the AllStays or Sanidumps app to find facilities along your route.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2733
