My wife and I both want to thank Juan for making the start of our camper trip great. Juan met with us and introduced himself, he had the camper already set up for preview and gave us a detailed tour of the camper, including sanitation, and instrumentation. We then went over the paperwork and everything went smoothly. I can honestly say it was a pleasure dealing with Juan. Our trip in itself was great as we took off to see Americana covering from Florida to Iowa and back. It was beautiful country, and the people were very pleasant. Just to see those beautiful cornfields for miles in rows humble you. God bless our farmers. The camper itself ran smoothly with no mechanical failures or concerns. The vehicle is well maintained. Now for the negative. I may have lost or had stolen off the vehicle three hubcaps. Lesson learned: equipment security is important and a check should be done periodically. When checking tires make sure you hubcaps are there. My overall evaluation is that I would gladly do business with Juan again. I know I could count on him and His Sunseeker camper. Thanks again Juan We appreciate you.

What a great host! Jerry was the man! He is such a nice nice fella. He went above and beyond. The world would be such a better place if more people tried a little harder to go a little more out of their way to make people stay great. The trailer worked great. The AC was cold and I appreciated that as it was out. At the end, Jerry is a top-notch fella and I hope that you contact him and ask him how your website can be better and offering better service. He’s an older fella and you young pups on the Internet need to learn something from the old timers.!!!!!

This was our first time using an RV while camping and we'll probably never go back to using a tent. Blake and Heather definitely set a high standard for future rentals. They had it set up and ready to go upon our arrival. It was very clean and fully stocked. Blake took time to show us around and explain where to find things. Everything worked great without any problems. We definitely recommend renting from them, as they will be our first choice for future rentals.

Do I need a special license to rent an RV in West Des Moines?

Good news: in Iowa, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in West Des Moines, whether it's a campervan, travel trailer, or full-size Class A motorhome. The state does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers nearly every rental on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and we'll quickly verify your ID through the platform. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in, and you're ready to roll out of Des Moines International Airport (DSM) and onto Interstate 80.

What happens if I need to cancel my West Des Moines RV trip?

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a consistent cancellation policy for every rental in West Des Moines, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. If life happens, weather turns severe, or plans shift, refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel from your trip start. Hosts don't set or change these terms, RVezy does, which keeps things predictable across every listing. Pro tip: book early to secure peak summer dates around the Iowa State Fair, knowing you have built-in flexibility if something changes.

When is the best time of year to rent an RV in West Des Moines?

The sweet spot for RV camping in West Des Moines runs from late April through mid-October, with average July highs around 86°F and pleasant 70s in May, September, and early October. Iowa state parks generally turn on water and open shower buildings around May 1 and start winterizing in mid-October, so plan modern hookups within that window. Summer is gorgeous but humid with afternoon thunderstorms, while September delivers crisp air, fall colors, and far fewer crowds. Local insider tip: avoid the second and third weeks of August unless you're going to the Iowa State Fair, because every nearby campground books solid months in advance for that 11-day event.

I've never driven an RV before. How does pickup and orientation work?

First time renting an RV? You're going to be fine, and your host has your back. At pickup in West Des Moines, your host walks you through every system step by step: how to start the generator, dump the tanks, hook up at a campground, run the awning, and operate the propane stove. Most orientations last 30 to 60 minutes, and you can record video on your phone for later reference. Hosts also share their cell number so you can text questions from the road. If big-rig driving feels intimidating, start with a Class B campervan rental in West Des Moines or a small Class C, both easy to handle on Interstate 235 around the metro.

What happens if something breaks down on the road?

Don't worry, every motorhome rental in West Des Moines on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so you're never stranded. If you get a flat on Interstate 80 near Waukee, run out of fuel heading to Saylorville Lake, or have an engine issue on a backroad to the Bridges of Madison County, one call connects you to dispatch any time, day or night. Your host is also a phone call or text away for quick troubleshooting on quirks like a tripped breaker or a stuck slide-out. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's roadside assistance card and your host's number before pulling out of the driveway so everything's at your fingertips.

What kind of fuel mileage should I budget for, and how much is gas in Iowa?

Good news for your wallet: Iowa consistently ranks among the five cheapest states in America for gasoline, recently averaging around $2.50 per gallon for regular unleaded according to AAA. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 18 to 22 MPG for a Class B campervan, and however your tow vehicle handles a travel trailer. For a typical 500-mile loop from West Des Moines to Okoboji and back, budget around $125 to $175 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: Casey's General Store locations across central Iowa often have the friendliest pricing and easy RV access.

How far in advance should I book a campground near West Des Moines?

For Iowa state parks, the magic number is 3 months: reservations open exactly 90 days before your arrival date through iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com, and popular spots like Walnut Woods can book out within hours for summer weekends. Private parks like Des Moines West KOA, Cutty's, and Griff's Valley View take reservations further out, often 6 to 12 months ahead, especially for Iowa State Fair week in August and any Adventureland or Iowa Speedway event weekends. The reservation cutoff for paying by card is 2 days before arrival, except at Walnut Woods which accepts same-day bookings until 9 PM. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the 3-month mark and book the second the window opens.

What are the driving conditions like in and around West Des Moines?

Driving conditions around West Des Moines are some of the easiest in any US metro: flat to gently rolling terrain, well-maintained interstates (I-35, I-80, and I-235 wrap the city), and no mountain passes or coastal cliffs to worry about. Summer can bring quick thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches (May and June are peak), so check the Iowa 511 app before long drives. Winter brings snow, ice, and wind from December through March. Watch for the I-235 mixmaster downtown and the West Mixmaster at I-35/I-80, both can get busy at rush hour. Local insider tip: avoid Mills Civic Parkway and Jordan Creek Town Center on weekend afternoons if you're driving a big rig.

What amenities will I find at campgrounds around West Des Moines?

Campgrounds near West Des Moines are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Most private RV parks like Griff's Valley View, River Oaks, and Des Moines West KOA offer full hookups with 30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer, on-site dump stations, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. State park sites at Walnut Woods include electric and water at most pads, plus a dump station with potable water for tank rinses. You can typically fill fresh water at the campground entrance or your site. Pro tip: most Iowa state parks have free dump stations open to overnight guests, while Pilot and Flying J truck stops along Interstate 80 (like the Altoona and Dexter exits) offer paid dump-and-fill stops for travelers between campgrounds.

What's typically included inside an RV rental in West Des Moines?

Your West Des Moines RV rental comes ready to camp. Expect a real bed (or two or three), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class B, C, and A motorhomes, plus seatbelted seating for everyone traveling. Air conditioning, propane heat, and a TV are standard in most listings, and many hosts include sheets, towels, outdoor chairs, and a starter kit of paper goods. Some RVs include a generator for off-grid power, Wi-Fi hotspot, or solar panels. Each listing clearly itemizes what's included, so you'll know exactly what to pack before your Iowa road trip begins.

What add-ons and pickup options do West Des Moines hosts offer?

West Des Moines hosts offer flexible add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include bedding and linen packages, camping chairs and tables, portable BBQs, generators, bike racks, Wi-Fi hotspots, and even kayaks or paddleboards for trips to Saylorville Lake or Lake Red Rock. Pet fees, extra mileage packages, and dump-station service after your trip are also frequently available. For pickup, you can collect the RV from the host's home in the metro (often near Jordan Creek, Clive, Waukee, or Urbandale) or arrange delivery to your campsite. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than later, since hosts often offer trip-long discounts versus daily rates.

How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

Payment is straightforward and secure: when you book a cheap RV rental in West Des Moines (or any rig on the platform), you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup and released back to you shortly after a smooth return, typically within a few business days. The deposit amount is shown clearly on every listing. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup and dropoff, take date-stamped photos and videos, return the RV with the agreed fuel level and tanks dumped, and respect the mileage limit. Easy as that.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-works

Can I park overnight in West Des Moines outside of a campground?

Yes, with a little planning. For a quick overnight, some Walmart Supercenters in the Des Moines metro have welcomed RVers in the past, but always call the store manager first since policies vary by location. Cracker Barrel restaurants, Cabela's, and Iowa rest areas along Interstate 80 are reliable backup options for a single night. For anything longer, book a real campground like Walnut Woods, Timberline, or Cutty's: you'll have hookups, showers, and a much better sleep than a parking lot. Insider tip: the Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott (about 90 minutes east) is the world's largest and a fun overnight stop.
