2018 Thor Motor Coach Class C
Bryan was an excellent host! He was very friendly and flexible with the rental and we appreciated him so much! The rental was clean and comfortable and had literally everything you would need for a trip! We’ve rented RVs before for festivals and had to buy/bring everything so it was very much appreciated! Also Bryan was very thorough with explaining how to use different aspects of the RV and was available through text if you did have any questions! We definitely will be renting again when we come back!

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Shelby, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Shelby, MI?
An RV rental in Shelby, MI is one of the more affordable ways to explore West Michigan's Lake Michigan coast and the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run roughly $125 to $225, and Class C motorhomes generally land between $175 and $325. Weekly bookings and shoulder-season dates in May or September often unlock lower nightly rates. To score a cheap RV rental in Shelby, book midweek, filter by your exact sleeps count, and message hosts about multi-night discounts. Rates climb fastest during the Silver Lake ORV peak weekends in July, so locking in early saves real money.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shelby%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Shelby, Michigan?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Shelby, MI. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, including Class A motorhomes, Class C motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, and fifth wheels listed on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association before your trip. That's it, you're cleared to cruise US-31 toward the dunes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Shelby?
Every RVezy booking in Shelby comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can head to the Hart-Montague Trail or Silver Lake Sand Dunes with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (it isn't host-defined, you decide). Coverage tiers vary in deductible and limits, so review them before you book to pick the option that fits your trip length and comfort level. Once selected, you can enjoy your Lake Michigan getaway knowing meaningful financial protection is in place.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Shelby RV trip plans change?
You can book with confidence: RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy for every reservation (it is not host-defined and is not shown on individual listings), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you have breathing room if plans shift. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so you are not left stranded. Lock in your Silver Lake summer dates early since the best Shelby RV rentals fill fast, knowing RVezy's cancellation framework has your back if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Shelby?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Shelby is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Shelby and surrounding Oceana County are genuinely dog-friendly. Silver Lake State Park allows leashed pets on most trails and designated areas (pets are not permitted on the designated swim beach), and the Hart-Montague Trail State Park is a 22-mile paved rail-trail great for morning walks. Many private campgrounds in the area also welcome pets. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, and pack a 6-foot leash since Michigan state parks require it at all times.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/pets-in-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Shelby?
Yes, RV delivery in Shelby is a game-changer, especially if you're new to RVing or just want to skip the drive. Many RVezy hosts in the Oceana County area will deliver and set up the motorhome or travel trailer directly at Silver Lake State Park, nearby private RV parks, or a private property along Lake Michigan. They'll level the RV, connect water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your campsite info. Charles Mears State Park in nearby Pentwater is another popular delivery target for a walk-to-beach experience without ever towing.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/silver-lakeHow far can I drive on a Shelby RV trip, and what about mileage limits?
You've got plenty of range for a memorable Shelby RV trip. Many RVezy hosts in Michigan offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some list RV rentals with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer loops. From Shelby you can comfortably reach Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (about 110 miles north), Traverse City (about 140 miles), Grand Rapids (about 90 miles), Mackinaw City (about 240 miles), or cross into Wisconsin via the SS Badger car ferry from Ludington, about 20 miles north. Filter for unlimited mileage on RVezy if you're planning a multi-stop Lake Michigan road trip to avoid per-mile surprises.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shelby%2C%20MichiganWhat are the best campgrounds near Shelby, MI for an RV?
Shelby is surrounded by some of West Michigan's best RV camping. Silver Lake State Park Campground (about 8 miles west) offers around 200 modern sites with electric hookups, easy Lake Michigan access, and views toward the sand dunes. Sun Retreats Silver Lake features full-hookup sites with a pool and resort amenities. Charles Mears State Park in nearby Pentwater is a small lakefront gem with a short walk to the beach and downtown shops. For a quieter inland option, several private RV parks operate just south of Silver Lake. Book Silver Lake State Park through MiDNRReservations.com six months ahead for July weekends, since prime sites go quickly.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Shelby?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Shelby runs late May through early October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s F and Lake Michigan beach days are at their best. July and August are peak season with warm water and full campgrounds. September is a local favorite: temperatures often still reach the 70s, crowds thin out, and the sand dunes glow gold at sunset. May is mild and quieter, while October brings stunning fall color along the Hart-Montague Trail. Winters are cold and snowy with significant lake-effect snowfall, so most campgrounds close November through April. Book September for the best weather-to-crowds balance.
weather.gov/grr/I'm a first-time RV renter, will I actually know what I'm doing?
Yes, and you're in great hands. First time renting an RV is one of the most common scenarios on RVezy, and every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery if they bring the RV to you). They'll walk you through the slide-outs, water systems, propane, generator, awning, and dump procedures step by step, then stay reachable through the RVezy app for the whole trip. You can also message your host before booking with any questions. Pick a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer for your first Shelby trip: the roads around Silver Lake and the Hart-Montague corridor are flat and easy, perfect for building confidence on day one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007133-RentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so whether you've got a flat tire on US-31, a dead battery at Silver Lake State Park, or a propane question late at night near Pentwater, help is one phone call away. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for anything RV-specific, like how to reset the inverter or start the generator. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip too. Save the roadside number in your phone the moment you confirm the booking and snap a photo of the RV's spare tire location during your walkthrough.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Shelby RV rental out of state or across the border?
Yes, an RV road trip from Shelby opens up much of the Midwest. Most RVezy hosts welcome travel throughout Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin, and the SS Badger car ferry from nearby Ludington puts you in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in roughly 4 hours. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so confirm directly with the host before booking and bring your passport. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Shelby include the Lake Michigan Circle Tour and a Wisconsin Dells loop via the Badger, both stunning in late summer.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip from Shelby?
Easy to plan for: most Class C motorhomes around Shelby get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans average 16 to 20, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Michigan regular unleaded prices typically run close to the national average. For a 4-day local trip staying within Oceana County and Silver Lake, budget roughly $80 to $150 in fuel. Add another $60 to $100 if you're looping up to Sleeping Bear Dunes. Fuel up at the larger stations in Hart or Ludington before heading north, since prices in smaller dune-area towns can run higher in peak summer.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Shelby?
Book early and you'll thank yourself. Michigan State Parks open reservations 6 months in advance through MiDNRReservations.com, and Silver Lake State Park's prime July and August weekends can sell out within minutes of the booking window opening. For Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends at Silver Lake or Charles Mears State Park, set a calendar reminder for the 6-month mark. Private campgrounds in the area typically fill 2 to 4 months ahead for peak summer. Midweek stays (Sunday through Thursday) are far easier to grab last-minute and often cheaper, an underrated win for flexible travelers.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Shelby in an RV?
Driving conditions around Shelby are about as friendly as RV travel gets. US-31 is a wide, well-maintained divided highway running right through Oceana County, and the back roads to Silver Lake, Pentwater, and Hart are flat, paved, and low-traffic, with no mountain passes and no big-city congestion. One important note: the soft sand at the Silver Lake ORV Area is for permitted off-road vehicles only, so never drive your rental RV onto the dunes. Winter (November to March) brings lake-effect snow and ice, so most travelers visit May to October. Pull into Mears or Pentwater for fuel and dump-station access: the streets are RV-friendly and the lakefront views make the stop worth it.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Shelby?
You'll find a great mix. Silver Lake State Park's modern campground offers electric hookups, potable water spigots throughout the loops, modern restrooms with hot showers, and an on-site dump station. Private parks like Sun Retreats Silver Lake step it up with full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. For dumping mid-trip, the Silver Lake State Park dump station is available to registered campers, and several private parks offer dump access for a small fee. Top off your fresh water tank in the morning before peak check-in, and pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose since some Michigan sites have the spigot farther from the pad than you'd expect.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat's actually inside a typical Shelby motorhome rental?
Plenty of comforts. A typical motorhome rental in Shelby on RVezy includes a queen or king bed (often plus convertible dinette and bunk options), a full kitchen with refrigerator, freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, and a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower. Most Class C and Class A units include roof-mounted air conditioning, a furnace, generator, awning, and seatbelted seating for your party. TVs are common, and many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots or starter kits with linens, cookware, and camp chairs. Filter RVezy by your exact sleeps count and check the photos for the bathroom layout, since a dry bath is a noticeable upgrade for family RV trips in Shelby.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shelby%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Lots of flexibility here. Popular add-ons on a Shelby RV rental include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, generator hours beyond the included allotment, bike racks, outdoor grills, and the all-important delivery and setup option. Most hosts offer pickup at their location near Shelby, Hart, or Pentwater, and many also deliver right to Silver Lake State Park or your private cottage. Mileage policies typically range from 100 free miles per night up to unlimited mileage on select listings. Bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit on your first booking and you'll arrive to a ready-to-camp RV, skipping the learning curve entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shelby%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Shelby, MI, RVezy charges your card through the platform, never directly to the host, so everything is tracked and protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV and your chosen protection level) and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good condition with no damages, excess mileage, or missing items. You'll never pay cash on pickup. Do a thorough walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off and send it through the RVezy message thread for a faster, smoother deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Shelby during winter, and is cold-weather camping doable?
Yes, winter RV camping near Shelby is possible and genuinely scenic, with the Silver Lake ORV Area open to fat-tire biking and other winter recreation during the seasonal off-road closure, and snow-covered dunes that are unforgettable. Availability on RVezy thins out November through April since many hosts winterize their units, but you can still find four-season campervans and motorhomes with heated holding tanks, propane furnaces, and shore-power compatibility. Many private campgrounds close, but a few sites stay open year-round with electric hookups. When booking a winter RV rental in Shelby, ask the host about heated tanks and freshwater fill procedures, and bring a heated water hose if you plan to stay hooked up overnight in sub-freezing temperatures.
