Campgrounds and RV parks near Cap-Chat, QC

The coastline is the main draw at river level: beach walks, sunsets over the St. Lawrence, and the Phare de Cap-Chat lighthouse site with interpretive trails and the cat-shaped rock that gives the town its name. Projet Éole, the former vertical-axis wind turbine, sits just outside town. For hiking, Parc national de la Gaspésie holds 25 mountains above 1,000 metres in the Chic-Choc and McGerrigle ranges and shelters the only woodland caribou herd south of the St. Lawrence, plus a large moose population. A section of the International Appalachian Trail runs through the park. The Réserve faunique de Matane is known for one of the highest moose densities in Quebec, with brook trout fishing on its lakes and watercraft rentals in the Étang à la Truite sector.

Cap-Chat has a short, cool camping season. Most coastal campgrounds open in spring and close in fall, and Sépaq campgrounds in Parc national de la Gaspésie generally run from mid-May to mid-October, with similar windows in the Réserve faunique de Matane. Peak demand is July and August, when daytime highs climb into the low twenties Celsius and the long-distance trails in Parc national de la Gaspésie are accessible. Backcountry huts along the International Appalachian Trail section open in summer and stay available into early fall. Spring brings cold nights and lingering snow at elevation, and many backcountry services only spin up in late June. Fall is short but scenic, with cooler nights, foliage, and quieter campgrounds through September. Winter is freezing, snowy, and windy, with the coast effectively shut down for RV travel. Parc national de la Gaspésie itself stays open year-round for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing, with rental gear available at the Discovery and Visitors Centre during the winter season.

Coastal campgrounds along Route 132 tend to have open, exposed sites with sea views and steady wind off the St. Lawrence. Sites are often close together, typical for the river corridor, and bathrooms are usually basic but functional with flush toilets and hot showers. Both French and English are commonly spoken in the area, though French is the working language. Inside Parc national de la Gaspésie, campgrounds range from semi-serviced and two-service sites at Mont-Albert to unserviced wooded sites at Cascapédia and Mont-Jacques-Cartier. Note that Cascapédia and Mont-Jacques-Cartier do not have potable water on site. Cell coverage is patchy in the mountains and along forest roads. Access to Étang à la Truite involves a long gravel-road drive, so allow extra time and check tire and fuel status. Wildlife, especially moose, is common, so drive cautiously at dawn and dusk.
