Campgrounds near Squaw Valley, California
Squaw Valley sits along Highway 180 in Fresno County, California, at roughly 1,600 feet elevation in the Sierra foothills. The town functions as the closest staging point for RV travelers heading into Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, with the Big Stump Entrance Station roughly 22 miles east on the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. Highway 180 climbs steadily from the San Joaquin Valley floor into mixed oak woodland and then conifer forest, so rigs should expect a sustained grade with limited passing lanes.
Campground options fall into two tiers. Private parks along the Highway 180 corridor, including Sequoia RV Park, Sequoia Mountain Farms, Sequoia Resort & RV Park, and Riverbend RV Park, offer full or partial hookups, easier big-rig access, and lower-elevation operation. Inside the parks, Sunset Campground at Grant Grove Village provides a forested national park experience at about 6,500 feet, but operates seasonally and has no hookups. Most travelers split the trip between a hookup base near Squaw Valley and a night or two inside the park.
Things to do near Squaw Valley
The dominant draw is the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. From Squaw Valley, Highway 180 leads to the Big Stump Entrance, Grant Grove Village, and the General Grant Tree, the third-largest tree in the world by volume and the nation's official Christmas tree. The General Grant Tree Trail is a short, paved loop suitable for children and passes a fallen sequoia trunk visitors can walk through. Beyond Grant Grove, the byway drops into the South Fork Kings River canyon and ends at Road's End in Cedar Grove, where the Mist Falls Trail follows the river through granite gorges.
Hume Lake, in Sequoia National Forest off Highway 180, offers fishing, swimming, and an easy paved loop. Closer to town, the Squaw Valley-Miramonte AVA has small family wineries set among oak-covered hills. Grant Grove Stables runs guided one- and two-hour trail rides through the sequoias in summer.

Squaw Valley itself stays accessible year-round, but the route into Kings Canyon is highly seasonal. The segment of Highway 180 from the Hume Lake junction east to Cedar Grove closes for the winter in mid-November and typically reopens the fourth Friday in April, depending on Caltrans repairs and snow. Travelers aiming for Cedar Grove, Zumwalt Meadow, or Mist Falls must time the trip for late spring through mid fall.
Summer is peak season. Days at Squaw Valley elevation run hot and dry, frequently in the 90s, while Grant Grove at 6,500 feet stays noticeably cooler and is the more comfortable place to sleep. Wildfire smoke can affect visibility from mid-summer into early fall, and air-quality alerts are common in the San Joaquin foothills.
Winter brings rain at town elevation and snow above about 4,000 feet. Tire chains are routinely required on Highway 180 above Squaw Valley during storms. Spring brings wildflowers and high water in the Kings River; fall offers cool nights and lower crowds before the high-country road closes.

We rented this RV for the long weekend for our first camping trip with our 1-year-old and 5-year-old, and we had such a wonderful time! The RV was incredibly clean, new, and comfortable. We also needed the trailer to be delivered, and the entire communication and delivery process was so smooth and right on time. We really appreciate all of the help and kindness from the owner. On our way back, our car wouldn’t start when he came to pick up the trailer. He took the time to help us with our car and suggested something that actually worked and got it started! We truly appreciated him going above and beyond to help us. We would definitely book another trip with him in the future.

RV was nice and clean, a couple of mishaps refrigerator door does not lock so our food fell out all over the floor neither does the cabinet door and our dry goods also flew out onto the floor, battery would not hold a charge.

Its was our first time camping and we are very lucky we found this one. Alex is a great host and explained everything before we departed. We were a little stressed as it was our first time camping in King's Canyon, but Alex made us feel comfortable with the trailer and walked us through everything. The trailer is super neat and clean we didn't have to do anything to set up. We put our stuff in it and it was ready to go which made our trip a lot easier. Alex is very friendly and was available throughout our whole trip in case we had questions and needed help. We will definitely be coming back to Alex for all our camping adventures. Thank you it was a great experience!

We had a great week in the Sequoias using Alex’s trailer. It was extremely clean and had great supplies available. The kids loved their bunkbeds plus the option to sleep on the fold-down dinette area. Communication with Alex was great - he provided lots of helpful details and helped us resolve one minor issue right away. Definitely recommend!

How to book campgrounds
National Park Service sites inside Kings Canyon, including Sunset Campground at Grant Grove, are reserved through Recreation.gov or by phone at 877-444-6777. Sunset is generally open from late May through the week after Labor Day, with individual sites bookable up to one month in advance and group sites up to four months out. Because the window is short, summer weekends often book the moment they open, so travelers should set a reminder for the release date and log in at 7 a.m. Pacific time.
Private parks along Highway 180, including Sequoia RV Park, Sequoia Resort & RV Park, Sequoia Mountain Farms, and Riverbend RV Park, are reserved directly through the operator's website or phone. These fill more slowly than in-park sites but still sell out for holiday weekends and peak July and August dates. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is a reasonable target for summer; shoulder seasons are usually flexible.
What to expect on the ground
Squaw Valley is a small, strung-out community with a market, gas, and basic services along Highway 180. Fuel up and pick up groceries here, because options inside the parks are limited and pricier. Cell coverage is reasonable in town but drops off quickly once the highway begins climbing.
Bear-resistant food storage is mandatory inside the national parks. Sunset Campground provides a metal food locker at every site, and food, coolers, and scented items must be stored in it whenever they are not in immediate use. Vehicles over 22 feet long should enter the parks via Highway 180 rather than the Generals Highway from the south, and the road into Cedar Grove has tight switchbacks that are not recommended for the largest trailers. Expect cool nights even in summer above 6,000 feet.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Squaw Valley, CA?
Good news: an RV rental in Squaw Valley is one of the more affordable ways to explore Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. On RVezy, travel trailers in the area typically start around $90 to $140 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs run $250 and up. Because Squaw Valley sits at the gateway to Kings Canyon, summer weekends fill up fast, so booking 4 to 8 weeks ahead unlocks the best pricing. Want a cheap RV rental in Squaw Valley? Travel midweek, choose a smaller travel trailer, and look for hosts offering free local delivery to skip the tow vehicle requirement. Bundling 5+ nights often unlocks weekly discounts too.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/fees.htmWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Squaw Valley, California?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Squaw Valley. California does not require a special endorsement or commercial driver's license for motorhomes or travel trailers under 40 feet, so your standard Class C license works for nearly every RV on RVezy. Renters must be 25 or older, and you'll verify your ID quickly through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), available from your local auto club for around $20. Once that's sorted, you're ready to roll into Kings Canyon Scenic Byway with confidence.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/Is RV rental insurance and protection included for my Squaw Valley trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Squaw Valley booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head up Highway 180 toward Kings Canyon with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV and provides liability coverage during your trip. At checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip (you pick it, not the host), which adjusts your deductible and coverage limits. Roadside help is built in, so a flat tire on the climb to Grant Grove or a dead battery at your campground is one phone call away. Book confidently knowing your RV rental in Squaw Valley is covered from pickup to return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Squaw Valley RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates without stress. After that window, your refund depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your payment or provides travel credits so your trip can still happen. If Kings Canyon road conditions or wildfire smoke force a change, RVezy support is a quick message away. Plan ahead, book early, and know flexibility is built into the platform.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Squaw Valley?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Squaw Valley is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs. Once you arrive you have great options nearby: dogs on leash are allowed in Sequoia National Forest, at most Pine Flat Lake recreation areas, and around Hume Lake. Pets are not allowed on most trails inside Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, so plan paw-friendly hikes in the surrounding national forest instead. A small pet cleaning fee from your host is common, just confirm in the listing before booking.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Squaw Valley?
Yes, RV delivery in Squaw Valley is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campground at Pine Flat Lake, Hume Lake, Princess Campground, or even straight to a private property or driveway. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave, so you don't have to worry about backing into a tight site or operating the awning solo. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it and how far they'll travel.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/sequoia/recarea/?recid=80138How far can I drive on my RV rental, and what mileage policy should I expect?
You have plenty of room to roam. Most Squaw Valley hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and additional miles typically run about $0.30 to $0.45 each. Some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for an ambitious Sierra Nevada loop. From Squaw Valley you are roughly 13 miles to the Kings Canyon National Park entrance road, about 55 miles to Grant Grove Village, about 75 miles to Sequoia's Giant Forest, and roughly 175 miles to Yosemite's south entrance. If you are planning a big Squaw Valley RV trip across multiple parks, message the host before booking to discuss a higher mileage cap. Many will say yes.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat are the best campgrounds near Squaw Valley for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Squaw Valley. Top picks include Princess Campground in Sequoia National Forest (about 35 miles up Highway 180, with paved sites under tall pines), Hume Lake Campground (lakefront sites with swimming and a small store nearby), Pine Flat Lake recreation areas like Island Park and Trimmer (boat-friendly with partial hookups), and Sentinel Campground in Kings Canyon along the Kings River. For full-hookup comfort, Sequoia RV Ranch in Three Rivers and Sun and Fun RV Park in Tulare are within about an hour. Pro tip: book national forest sites through Recreation.gov six months in advance for summer weekends.
recreation.gov/When is the best time to visit Squaw Valley, CA in an RV?
Squaw Valley shines almost year-round thanks to its mild Mediterranean foothill climate. The sweet spot for an RV trip is April through June, when wildflowers explode along the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, daytime temps hover in the 70s and 80s, and waterfalls inside the national park are roaring. September and October are equally magical, with crisp 75 to 85 degree days, fewer crowds, and stunning fall color around Hume Lake. Summer (July to August) is hot, often pushing into the 90s, so target higher-elevation campgrounds at 6,000+ feet for cooler nights. Winters are mild in town (40s to 60s), but Highway 180 into Kings Canyon closes from roughly mid-November to mid-April due to snow.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/weather.htmI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Squaw Valley?
You've got this. First time renting an RV is genuinely easier than most people expect, and Squaw Valley is a friendly place to start. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or delivery), walking through propane, water, slides, the generator, and dump procedures, so you're never guessing. The roads around Squaw Valley are wide and rural, with Highway 180 offering a gradual climb into the mountains rather than steep switchbacks. For your first day, stick to nearby spots like Pine Flat Lake before tackling the more winding stretch up to Kings Canyon. Hosts encourage questions over message, and 24/7 RVezy roadside assistance is a single phone call away.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if my RV breaks down on a Squaw Valley road trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, covering tire changes, lockouts, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. If you have an issue along Highway 180 between Squaw Valley and Kings Canyon, where cell service can drop in the canyon, drive to the nearest pullout with signal (the Hume Lake area and Grant Grove Village both have coverage and a ranger station). Then call the RVezy roadside number in your booking confirmation and message your host so they can help. For minor mechanical questions, hosts can often troubleshoot a fix over the phone in minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take my RV on a road trip from Squaw Valley to other destinations?
Absolutely, an RV road trip from Squaw Valley puts some of California's greatest hits within easy reach. Popular routes include Squaw Valley to Sequoia National Park (about 75 miles via the Generals Highway), Squaw Valley to Yosemite's south entrance (around 175 miles), Squaw Valley to Morro Bay on the Central Coast (about 200 miles), and Squaw Valley to Death Valley (around 270 miles, a great shoulder-season drive). Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations, so keep your itinerary inside the U.S. Cross-state trips into Nevada or Oregon are typically allowed, just confirm with your host before booking so mileage and travel plans are clear.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Squaw Valley RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is simpler than you'd think. Class C motorhomes in the Squaw Valley area typically average 8 to 10 mpg, Class A's run 6 to 8 mpg, campervans (Class B) hit 15 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg towing). California gas prices in the Fresno County area generally hover around $4.50 to $5.00 per gallon, with a Valero in Squaw Valley and several stations in nearby Sanger and Clovis offering the best pre-mountain prices. Pro tip: fill up before heading up Highway 180, because gas inside Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park runs about $1 more per gallon. Plan roughly $1 per mile in fuel for a Class C.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Squaw Valley?
Earlier is better, but you've got options. National forest and national park campgrounds (Princess, Hume Lake, Sentinel, Lodgepole) open reservations on Recreation.gov exactly six months in advance, and the prime summer weekends often book within the first hour, so set a calendar reminder. Pine Flat Lake's Island Park and Trimmer sites, run by Fresno County and the Army Corps of Engineers, take reservations 4 to 6 months ahead. Private RV parks like Sequoia RV Ranch usually have availability 1 to 2 months out. Pro tip: many smaller Sierra National Forest campgrounds remain first-come, first-served, so if you strike out online, arrive Thursday before a weekend and you'll usually score a spot.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Squaw Valley?
Driving an RV around Squaw Valley is very manageable with a few smart tips. The town sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills at about 1,700 feet, with Highway 180 (Kings Canyon Road) being your main artery, a wide, well-paved road that climbs steadily into the mountains. Once you pass Grant Grove and descend into Kings Canyon proper, the road gets steeper with sharper switchbacks, and rigs over 22 feet are not recommended past Hume Lake junction. Highway 245 from the south is windy and narrow, so most RVers use Highway 180 east out of Fresno instead. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms in summer and snow chain requirements November through April at higher elevations.
roads.dot.ca.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Squaw Valley have for RVs?
You'll find a healthy mix to match every comfort level. Full-hookup parks like Sequoia RV Ranch and Sun & Fun offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, and laundry. National forest campgrounds (Princess, Hume Lake, Stony Creek) provide picnic tables, fire rings, vault or flush toilets, and potable water spigots, but no hookups, so you'll boondock on your tanks. The closest dump stations and freshwater fills are at Princess Campground, Azalea in Grant Grove, and the Chevron in Squaw Valley itself. Pine Flat Lake offers a mix of partial hookup sites. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Squaw Valley before heading up, and dump on your way out at Grant Grove to avoid lines.
fs.usda.gov/recmain/sequoia/recreationWhat's included inside an RV rental in Squaw Valley?
Most RVs in Squaw Valley come ready to roll the moment you turn the key. Standard features include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable beds sleeping 2 to 8 depending on the rig, climate control with both AC and heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many motorhome rental Squaw Valley listings also feature generators (key for boondocking at Hume Lake), outdoor awnings, TVs, and increasingly, Starlink or hotspot Wi-Fi. Campervan rental Squaw Valley options skew smaller and more nimble, perfect for solo travelers or couples chasing Kings Canyon overlooks. Each listing on RVezy spells out exactly what's included, plus you can message the host to confirm anything specific.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhat add-ons can I get with my Squaw Valley RV rental?
Hosts in Squaw Valley love making your trip easier with thoughtful add-ons. Common options include kitchen kits ($30 to $75) with cookware, plates, and utensils; bedding and linen packages ($15 to $25 per person); camp chairs and outdoor tables ($10 to $20); generators for dry camping at Princess or Sentinel ($25 to $50 per day); and bike or kayak racks for Pine Flat Lake adventures. Pickup and dropoff happen at the host's location or, more conveniently, via delivery directly to your Sequoia or Kings Canyon campground. Mileage policies are listed up front on each listing, typically 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle a kitchen kit and bedding for a true turn-key experience.
gofresnocounty.com/How do payments and security deposits work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and entirely digital, with no cash or paper checks. When you book your RV rental in Squaw Valley, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, with the balance charged before your trip begins. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, separate from your booking payment, and is not charged unless damage occurs. After your trip ends and the host confirms everything is in order, the hold is released. To protect your deposit: do a thorough walkaround at pickup, photograph the RV inside and out, and return it clean with a full fuel tank as agreed in the listing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs family RV camping a good fit for Squaw Valley?
Squaw Valley is fantastic for a family RV trip thanks to its central location near three of California's most iconic parks. Kids love Hume Lake's swim beach and snack shop up Highway 180, the General Sherman Tree in Sequoia (the largest tree on Earth by volume), and the Roaring River Falls walk inside Kings Canyon. Pine Flat Lake offers swimming, fishing, and boat rentals close to home. Families renting an RV in Squaw Valley often pick a Class C or bunkhouse travel trailer sleeping 6 to 8, with seatbelted seating and a dedicated bunk area for kids. Pro tip: stop in town for fresh apple pie, a local Squaw Valley tradition.
