Campgrounds near Biwabik, Minnesota
Biwabik sits on Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range in St. Louis County, roughly 20 miles east of Virginia and within a short drive of Lake Vermilion and the Superior National Forest. The town serves as the gateway to Giants Ridge resort, with two golf courses, a ski area, and connecting trails, and it draws RV travelers year-round for fishing, biking, and winter sports.
Campground options range from in-town municipal parks to state-park campgrounds close to the Boundary Waters. West Forty RV Park and Campground and Fortune Bay Resort Casino and RV Park cover the full-hookup end of the market, while Hoodoo Point Campground on Lake Vermilion offers a mix of lakeside and wooded municipal sites. For state-park camping, Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park and Bear Head Lake State Park provide reservable drive-in sites, camper cabins, and access to trails and beaches.
The surrounding forest is a mix of aspen, birch, and pine, so most sites feel wooded even when hookups are available, and elevation across the area runs roughly 1,400 to 1,600 feet.
Things to do near Biwabik
Fishing anchors most trips. Bear Head Lake State Park has a sandy swimming beach, a fishing pier, and lakes that support walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish, and Lake Vermilion is known regionally for walleye and muskie. Boat launches at Hoodoo Point Campground and Fortune Bay Resort Casino and RV Park put anglers on the water quickly.
On land, the paved Mesabi Trail runs through the area for cycling and inline skating, and Giants Ridge offers lift-served mountain biking and cross-country trails in summer. Families can tour the historic Soudan Underground Mine at Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park, descending to the 27th level of Minnesota's oldest iron mine, and explore Bear Head Lake by canoe or kayak.

Camping in the Biwabik area is largely a May through October pursuit. Most developed campgrounds operate seasonally from May through September or October, with limited winter camping options. Hoodoo Point Campground runs from May 1 through October 1, and Vermilion Ridge Campground at Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park typically opens in early May and closes in late October.
Summer is peak season. Black flies and mosquitoes are heaviest from late May through June, then taper. July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures and the busiest weekends around Independence Day and county-fair events. Fall color usually peaks from mid-September into early October and pairs well with cooler nights and fewer bugs.
Winter shifts activity to Giants Ridge and to state-park trails. Bear Head Lake State Park stays open year-round with camper cabins, a guesthouse, and access to cross-country ski and snowmobile trails, so RV travelers with four-season rigs still have options after the municipal parks close.
How to book campgrounds near Biwabik
State-park sites are booked through Minnesota's centralized system. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance through the Minnesota DNR reservation system, either online at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone. A Minnesota state-park vehicle permit is required in addition to the campsite fee and can be purchased daily or annually. All state park and recreation area campsites are reservable, including winter sites.
Municipal and private parks book directly. Hoodoo Point Campground takes reservations through its own website or by phone, and Fortune Bay Resort Casino and RV Park handles bookings through the resort. Popular holiday weekends and fall-color weekends at Bear Head Lake and Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park often fill the moment the 120-day window opens, so plan the reservation date, not just the trip date.
What to expect
Sites tend to be wooded and reasonably private by regional standards. State-park campgrounds have modern shower buildings, flush toilets, dump stations, and a mix of electric and non-electric drive-in sites. Bear Head Lake State Park's campground has 73 sites, 45 of which have electric hookups, plus five camper cabins. Vermilion Ridge Campground at Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park has 32 drive-in sites with 30- and 50-amp electric service, suitable for larger rigs.
Cell coverage is patchy once trips push north toward the Boundary Waters, and grocery runs are easiest from Virginia, Tower, or Ely. Bears are active from spring through fall, so food and coolers should be stored inside the RV overnight. Firewood must generally be purchased locally to comply with Minnesota's rules on transporting wood.
