Campgrounds near New Freedom, Pennsylvania
New Freedom sits in southern York County, Pennsylvania, right on the Mason-Dixon Line and just north of the Maryland border. The area works well as an RV base because it combines quiet farm-country roads with quick access to I-83, putting Baltimore, Harrisburg, York, and Gettysburg all within roughly an hour's drive.
Campground options within a short drive include Merry Meadows Recreation Farm just across the state line in Freeland, Maryland, Indian Rock Campgrounds outside of York, Ben Franklin RV Park, and Cedar Lake Resort. For a public-land experience, Codorus State Park lies to the west near Hanover, with the 1,275-acre Lake Marburg anchoring the day-use area, where the Codorus State Park Gift Shop and Museum is located.
Most private parks in this corridor are family oriented, with pools, playgrounds, and full-hookup sites geared to weekend and long-weekend RV trips. The state park is the go-to for water-based recreation and larger, more spread-out sites.
Things to do near New Freedom
The Heritage Rail Trail County Park runs directly through New Freedom, offering a paved and crushed-stone route for biking, walking, and jogging that connects south to Maryland's NCR Trail and north toward York. Steam and diesel excursion trains operate seasonally from the restored New Freedom station.
Codorus State Park draws campers for boating and warmwater lake fishing on the 1,275-acre Lake Marburg with 26 miles of shoreline, plus a swimming pool, disc golfing, and picnicking. Families often pair a camping trip with day trips to Hershey, the Gettysburg battlefield, the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, or outlet shopping in Lancaster.
Closer to town, wineries, cideries, and farm stands are common stops during harvest season.

Private parks such as Merry Meadows Recreation Farm stay open year-round, though amenities like pools and organized activities are limited to the warmer months.
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots: mild days, cool nights, and lighter bug pressure. Summer weekends are the busiest, with holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) filling private resorts months in advance. Humidity and afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August.
Fall brings reliable foliage color from mid-October through early November across the York County hills. Winter camping is possible at year-round private parks, but expect freezing overnight lows, potential snow, and reduced services.

Fantastic experience! The RV delivery and pick up were easy, the RV was clean and comfortable- our granddaughter loved the top bunk- and Owen communicated effectively, even when I texted him kind of late to ask about the stove. I would highly reccomend Owen!

How to book a campsite
Codorus State Park reservations are handled through the Pennsylvania State Parks system online or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, and reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival. Pennsylvania opens reservations 11 months in advance at 12:00 PM noon Eastern Time, an unusual release time among state park systems, and popular summer weekends go quickly.
Private parks in the area, including Merry Meadows Recreation Farm, Indian Rock Campgrounds, Ben Franklin RV Park, and Cedar Lake Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone.
For summer stays, plan to book six to eight weeks ahead for standard weekends and earlier for full-hookup pull-throughs or lakefront sites.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around New Freedom is rolling farmland and hardwood forest, with modest elevation changes and narrow rural roads leading into most campgrounds. Big-rig drivers should check length limits and turning radius before committing to smaller back-in sites, though several nearby parks accommodate larger RVs with pull-throughs and 30/50-amp service.
Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and along I-83 but can drop off inside Codorus State Park and in wooded valleys. Downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is a good idea.
Expect a family-camping atmosphere at private resorts, with pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities. State-park sites are quieter, more spread out, and better suited to campers focused on the lake, trails, and wildlife watching.

nps.gov/gett/index.htmWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?

Pennsylvania State Parks like Codorus and Gifford Pinchot use the official reservation system, and sites open up to 11 months in advance. Private parks like Drummer Boy in Gettysburg and Indian Rock near York take direct reservations and tend to book 3 to 6 months out for high season. Tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are far easier to snag and often $10 to $20 cheaper per night.
