Scotland camping overview
Scotland is a small community in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, sitting between Chambersburg and Gettysburg in the South Mountain region. The area places RV travelers within easy reach of several state parks along the northern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains, along with the Gettysburg battlefield to the east. Caledonia State Park sits roughly a dozen miles east along US 30, with Pine Grove Furnace State Park a short drive north into Cumberland County. Both parks anchor a network of state forest land in Michaux State Forest, giving campers hundreds of thousands of acres to explore.
RV options in the area range from state park campgrounds with electric hookups and dump stations to full-service private parks. The terrain is rolling and wooded, elevations are modest, and highway access via I-81, US 30, and US 11 makes the region a practical base for Civil War history, Appalachian Trail day hikes, and orchard country tours in Adams and Franklin counties.
Things to do near Scotland
Gettysburg National Military Park is the headline attraction, with a visitor center, self-guided auto tour, and landmarks including Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and Pickett's Charge. Caledonia State Park adds a swimming pool with a water slide, an 18-hole public golf course, and access to the Appalachian Trail. Pine Grove Furnace State Park offers two swimming lakes at Fuller Lake and Laurel Lake, the Appalachian Trail Museum, and the well-known Half Gallon Challenge at the general store marking the trail's midpoint. Michaux State Forest surrounds the parks with hiking, mountain biking, and fishing on stocked streams. Adams County orchards, local wineries, and the Eisenhower National Historic Site round out the day-trip options.

State park camping in the Scotland area follows a long shoulder-to-shoulder season rather than a strict summer window. Caledonia State Park's camping season opens the day before Pennsylvania trout season in early spring and closes with the end of deer season in December, covering most of the year for RV travelers willing to camp in cool weather. Pine Grove Furnace State Park's Charcoal Hearth Campground runs from late March into mid-December, with 70 tent and trailer sites among oaks and white pines.
Summer weekends are the busiest, driven by families visiting the Gettysburg battlefield, Appalachian Trail hikers, and swimmers heading for the state park lakes and pool. Fall brings cooler nights, foliage across South Mountain, and lighter crowds midweek. Spring can be wet and unpredictable but offers stocked-trout fishing and quieter campgrounds. Winter camping is limited to year-round cabins and the Paymaster's Cabin at Pine Grove Furnace.

Robert was extremely helpful, kind, knowledgeable, and patient with us. He was always available to help on the way and responded as soon he saw or heard. As first time RV renters, he gave us the best possible experience we could of had. We highly recommend.

I recommend this RV, driving this rig was simple and comfortable. The layout and design of the interior space was perfect and roomy. The dining set makes into a very nice long bed. I will rent this one again.

What to expect camping near Scotland
Expect wooded, rolling terrain with modest elevations in the South Mountain range. State park campgrounds in the area provide drinking water, warm showers, flush toilets, and sanitary dump stations, with a mix of non-electric, electric, and full-hookup sites. Chinquapin Hill at Caledonia has 18 full-hookup sites, while Pine Grove Furnace offers electric service at most sites but no individual water hookups, so RVers should arrive with full fresh tanks. Cell service is spotty at Pine Grove Furnace and inconsistent inside the state parks generally. Private parks such as the Gettysburg KOA offer full hookups, WiFi, a swimming pool, and family activities. Pets are permitted at designated sites, with Chinquapin Hill being pet-free and Hosack Run allowing leashed pets.
