Campgrounds near Spry, Pennsylvania
Spry is an unincorporated community in Spring Garden Township, just south of the city of York in south-central Pennsylvania. It sits within easy reach of the Susquehanna River corridor, Lancaster County's Amish farmland, Gettysburg's battlefield, and the Hershey and Harrisburg attractions to the north, making it a practical base for RV travellers exploring the region.
Campground options within a short drive lean toward private RV parks and family campgrounds. Indian Rock Campgrounds sits adjacent to the York Heritage Rail Trail and offers full water, electric, and sewer hookups, though it specializes in smaller rigs up to about 35 feet. Ben Franklin RV Park and Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground provide additional options closer to the Susquehanna, while Merry Meadows Recreation Farm and the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday sit within reasonable towing distance for trips oriented around Hershey or Lancaster.
York has a humid continental climate with a strong seasonal temperature contrast, warm summers and cold winters, which shapes when private parks open and how sites book up.
Things to do near Spry
The area pairs outdoor recreation with dense historical content. The Susquehanna River offers fishing, paddling, and boat access, and the York County Heritage Rail Trail runs from downtown York south to the Maryland line for cycling and walking, with direct access from Indian Rock Campgrounds.
Day trips fan out in every direction. Gettysburg National Military Park is under an hour west, Lancaster County's Amish markets and buggy country lie east, and Hersheypark, ZooAmerica, and Hershey Gardens sit north near the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday. Gifford Pinchot State Park, about 10 miles north of York, has two 18-hole disc golf courses, Boulder Woods and Quaker's Challenge, plus a lake for swimming and small-boat use.
Rainy-day options include the Harley-Davidson factory tour in York and the AACA automotive museum in Hershey.

December - February
39° / 25°F 75 mmCold with occasional snow; most private parks closed
Most private campgrounds around Spry follow a seasonal schedule, typically opening in April and closing in late October, though Indian Rock Campgrounds operates year-round. Pennsylvania state parks such as Gifford Pinchot and Codorus keep their main campground loops open from early spring through mid-December, with a reduced set of sites available in shoulder months.
Late spring and early fall are the strongest windows for RV travel, with mild temperatures and lower humidity. Summer brings warm, humid days and afternoon thunderstorms, plus peak family demand around holiday weekends, so weekends at parks near Hershey and Lancaster tend to fill weeks ahead.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Most private parks close their water systems by early November to prevent freeze damage, and snow can move through between December and March. Travellers heading out in the shoulder months should confirm hookup availability before booking, since many parks switch to electric-only once temperatures drop.

How to book campgrounds near Spry
Pennsylvania state park campsites, including Gifford Pinchot and Codorus, are reserved through the state's official Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations system, operated by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, with the release window opening at noon Eastern Time, and popular summer weekends often sell out quickly.
Private parks such as Indian Rock Campgrounds, Ben Franklin RV Park, Bainbridge Rock Quarry Campground, Merry Meadows Recreation Farm, and the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or through the KOA site for the Hershey location. For summer stays, booking two to three months out is a safe target; for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends, book as early as possible.
What to expect on arrival
Access to campgrounds around Spry is straightforward. Interstate 83 runs north-south through the area and connects to US-30 for east-west travel, so most parks are within twenty minutes of a major highway. Roads narrow quickly once off the main routes, especially east into Lancaster County farmland, so drivers of larger rigs should plan turns in advance.
Many private parks offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer) on pull-through and back-in sites, along with dump stations, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. State park sites are typically electric-only with shared water spigots and a central dump station.
Summer humidity is real. Bring bug spray for evenings near the river, and expect thunderstorms to build quickly. Cell coverage is generally strong across York County and thins only in the deeper valleys west of the Susquehanna.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Spry, PA in an RV?
Spring and fall are pure magic in south-central PA. Winters are cold (20 to 40 degrees) with occasional snow, but many four-season RVs with heated tanks are available on RVezy if you want a quiet, low-cost shoulder trip. Insider tip: aim for the third weekend of September to catch the York State Fair winding down and foliage just starting to turn.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Spry?
First time renting an RV? You're going to do great. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and how to dump tanks, so you're never left guessing. Spry sits in a friendly mix of suburban roads and rural backroads off Route 74 and Route 124, with easy I-83 access for getting out of town. The terrain is gently rolling, not mountainous, which is much more forgiving than driving in the Poconos or Laurel Highlands. Stick with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, and consider a host who offers delivery so the hardest miles are already done. You can also message hosts directly from any listing to ask all your beginner questions before you book.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat if my RV breaks down on the road in Pennsylvania?
You are never alone out there. Every RV rental in Spry, PA booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Lincoln Highway, a dead battery at Codorus State Park, or a lockout at a Sheetz fuel stop is just one phone call away from being solved. The roadside team can dispatch towing, tire service, battery jumps, fuel delivery, and lockout help throughout the US and most of Canada. Your host is also a quick message away through the RVezy app for RV-specific questions like how to reset the inverter. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV VIN and license plate at pickup so you have it ready if you ever need to call for roadside help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV across state lines or into Canada from Spry?
You bet, that's part of the fun. An RV road trip from Spry naturally crosses state lines: you can be in Maryland in 25 minutes, West Virginia in 2 hours, New Jersey in 2.5 hours, Virginia in 2 hours, or New York City suburbs in 3 hours, and the RVezy protection package follows you throughout the US. Canada trips are allowed on many listings but require host approval since insurance terms vary, so message before booking if you're eyeing Niagara Falls or Toronto. Heads up: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits. Insider route from Spry: take US-15 north to the Finger Lakes for a stunning 4-hour scenic drive through Pennsylvania farm country.
cbp.gov/travelHow much should I budget for fuel on a Spry RV trip?
Fuel is the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, and good planning keeps it tame. Class C motorhomes around Spry typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG when towing). Pennsylvania gas prices tend to run a bit higher than the national average due to state fuel taxes, so budget around $4.00 to $4.30 per gallon for regular and a bit more for diesel. For a 3-night, 200-mile loop to Gettysburg and back, plan roughly $80 to $150 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up just over the Maryland line (about 25 minutes south) before long trips, since Maryland fuel taxes are notably lower than Pennsylvania's.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Spry?
Earlier is better, but you have more flexibility than you might think. Pennsylvania state parks like Gifford Pinchot and Codorus open reservations on a rolling 11-month window through the official PA state parks reservation system, and summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) often fill 3 to 6 months ahead. Private RV parks like Indian Rock Campgrounds and Drummer Boy Campground typically book 4 to 8 weeks ahead in peak season but often have midweek openings just days out. Best campgrounds near Spry for last-minute trips include Otter Creek Campground and several private parks along the Susquehanna. Pro tip: aim for a Sunday-through-Wednesday stay and you will often find availability even in July.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhat are local driving conditions like around Spry, PA?
You'll find the driving around Spry refreshingly relaxed compared to big-city RV trips. Spry sits just off I-83 and PA Route 74, with mostly gentle rolling hills, well-maintained two-lane roads, and predictable traffic outside the morning and evening York commuter rush (roughly 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM). Watch for low-clearance railroad bridges in downtown York (some as low as 11 feet) and stick to designated truck routes when in an RV taller than 12 feet. Winter can bring black ice from December through February, and summer afternoons sometimes deliver fast-moving thunderstorms. Insider tip: use US-30 east-west and I-83 north-south as your main RV arteries, and avoid the narrow streets in historic downtown York and Gettysburg town center.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Spry typically offer?
You'll be well taken care of. Most campgrounds within 30 miles of Spry offer 30 and 50-amp electric hookups, potable water fill stations, and dump stations, while many private parks add full sewer hookups at the site, free WiFi, laundry, hot showers, and swimming pools. Indian Rock Campgrounds has full hookups and a creek for fishing; Gifford Pinchot State Park has electric sites, a sanitary dump station, and a swim beach but no individual sewer hookups; Codorus State Park provides electric, water, and a centralized dump station. Need to dump or fill water mid-trip? The Flying J in Carlisle (about 35 miles north) and several Pennsylvania state parks offer public dump stations for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot fresh water hose and a 30-to-50-amp adapter to cover almost any hookup combo.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pages/default.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Spry?
More than you'd expect, and you can pick exactly what fits your trip. RV rental Pennsylvania options on RVezy range from compact campervan rental Spry choices that sleep 2 (think Class B with a kitchenette, wet bath, and bed) up to family-sized Class A and Class C motorhomes that sleep 6 to 8 with full kitchens, queen beds, bunks, dinette conversions, and proper bathrooms with showers. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar layouts at a lower nightly rate. Standard features in most rigs include air conditioning, furnace, refrigerator, microwave, propane stove, TV, and seatbelted seats for traveling passengers. Many also include generators for off-grid power and outdoor speakers for campfire vibes. Use the "Sleeps" and RV type filters on RVezy to narrow down to your perfect rig.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulationsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Spry, PA include linen and bedding packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), outdoor camping chairs and tables, bike racks, generator use ($5 to $15 per hour or daily flat rate), portable propane fire pits, and pet cleaning fees. Many hosts offer delivery to your campsite at a per-mile rate (commonly $2 to $4 per mile round trip). Mileage policies vary, but 100 to 150 free miles per night is typical, with extra miles billed around $0.35 to $0.50 each. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator add-on for a fully hands-off first family RV trip Spry experience.
penndot.pa.gov/Pages/default.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your motorhome rental Spry trip on RVezy, you pay the rental cost, service fee, and chosen protection plan upfront through the platform using a credit or debit card, with all transactions processed securely inside RVezy (never hand cash to a host). A refundable security deposit is handled separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), authorized shortly before your trip and released after a damage-free return. Pro tip: do a full time-stamped walkaround video at pickup and again at drop-off so any pre-existing scuffs are documented. That one habit prevents most deposit disputes and keeps your refund moving fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I park my RV overnight in Spry outside of a campground?
Yes, with a few smart tips. Spry is residential and York Township limits on-street RV parking, but you have solid overnight options nearby. The Walmart Supercenter in Red Lion (about 5 miles southeast) and the Cracker Barrel along Route 30 in York commonly allow free overnight RV parking with manager approval. For comfortable hookups, Indian Rock Campgrounds and Gifford Pinchot State Park are both quick drives away. Always call ahead, keep slide-outs and awnings in at retail lots, and be a respectful guest. Insider tip: a Harvest Hosts membership unlocks free overnight stays at York County wineries and farms, a beautiful local twist on RV camping Spry travelers love.
