Campgrounds and RV parks near Volga, SD

Volga sits in Brookings County in eastern South Dakota, roughly 60 miles north of Sioux Falls and a short drive west of Brookings and South Dakota State University. The surrounding Glacial Lakes region is dotted with shallow, connected lakes left behind by retreating glaciers, and most of the campgrounds within an hour of town are lakeside state park units run by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. The closest developed camping is at Oakwood Lakes State Park, about 7 miles north and 3 miles west of Volga off US Highway 14, or Exit 140 on I-29. Eight connected glacial lakes intermingle with oak forests and grasslands, giving RV travelers shaded sites with quick water access. Within roughly an hour, travelers can also reach Campground 1 - Lake Poinsett State Recreation Area to the northwest, Walkers Point Recreation Area on Lake Madison to the south, and Lake Herman State Park near the town of Madison. All four parks accept RVs, take advance reservations, and cluster along the same US 14 and I-29 corridors that pass through Volga.

All four South Dakota state park campgrounds near Volga use the same central reservation system run by Game, Fish and Parks. Reservations can be made online at campsd.com (Go Outdoors South Dakota) or by calling 1.800.710.2267. Sites are reservable up to 90 days before the arrival date, opening in a rolling window, so summer weekends at Campground 2 - Oakwood Lakes State Park and Walkers Point Recreation Area fill quickly once each date opens. A South Dakota park entrance license is required in addition to the campsite fee and can be added at checkout. For holiday weekends, book the moment the 90-day window opens at 7 a.m. Central. If dates are locked, monitor cancellations: sites at Campground 1 - Lake Poinsett State Recreation Area and Lake Herman State Park frequently free up midweek. Cabins at these parks book on the same system.
