2018 KZ Travel Trailer
10/10 host!! This was my first RV rental experience and the host responded to my many questions kindly and promptly. The host went above and beyond to make our needs for our trip met and make it a smooth experience from booking to delivery to pickup. The RV was in excellent shape and had plenty of perks to rave about. From the large bathroom, bonus media entertainment, comfy pullout couch and very well stocked RV, it made it a turn-key escape ready to enjoy from the jump. Cannot say more positive things about this host and our stay on this RV. Have no doubt you’ll be in great hands with this choice of a rental/host - wish I could give even more stars! Will definitely rebook and refer this RV every chance I get.

Yadean was such a great and attentive host, any questions we had he was quick to answer and van was absolutely amazing. So easy to drive (even for me and I’m 5 ft!) and everything was so thoughtfully designed. We feel so spoiled to have gotten to take the rocky roamer on our adventure, 1000% worth it.

Perfect trailer for our family to use to spend time on our land before we build. Opting for delivery, we were able to enjoy our trip without all the hassle of towing. Jeremy even drove out to help one morning when we had a small issue. Him and Meghan were both so helpful, kind, and very responsive. Thanks for a great experience!

What a great pop up. So convenient and easy to tell, quick to set up and breakdown, but has the feel and functionality of a massive trailer or RV. And Joe was great to work with picking up, while in possession, and dropping off.

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Howard, CO
How much does an RV rental in Howard, CO typically cost?
Good news: RV rental in Howard, CO is often more affordable than you'd expect for such a stunning stretch of the Arkansas River Valley. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and larger Class A rigs can land between $250 and $400 nightly. Prices peak from June through August when rafting season is in full swing along the Arkansas. For a cheap RV rental in Howard, look at shoulder months like May or September, when temperatures are still pleasant and listings often drop 20 to 30 percent. Pro tip: weekly bookings frequently unlock host discounts, so if you're staying five nights or more, message the host before booking.
colorado.com/cities-and-towns/howardWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Howard, Colorado?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Howard, Colorado. There is no special RV endorsement or commercial driver's license (CDL) required for the motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens quickly through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country license, and you are good to go. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward the process is, especially given the freedom an RV gives you to explore the Sangre de Cristo and Sawatch ranges right from Howard.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs protection included with my Howard, CO RV rental?
Yes, every booking on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit the winding Highway 50 along the Arkansas River with real peace of mind. You choose your level of coverage at checkout, and the plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection so a small mishap does not derail your motorhome rental in Howard. If something goes sideways on a remote stretch near Bighorn Sheep Canyon, one call gets help dispatched. Pro tip: review the protection tiers carefully at checkout to match your comfort level and trip style.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Howard RV trip?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy on every rental (hosts do not), and there is a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, refunds depend on how far out you are from your trip start date, and special circumstances like natural disasters or wildfires (which occasionally affect Chaffee and Fremont counties) are considered. Because the policy is platform-wide, you will not see different policies listed on individual RVs, which keeps things simple. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for peak rafting season, and reach out to RVezy support if plans change. The team is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Howard, CO RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Howard is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching, and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Many even leave treats and bowls in the rig. Howard is a fantastic dog destination: the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area allows leashed pets along the river, and nearby San Isabel National Forest has miles of dog-friendly trails like Rainbow Trail just south of town. The town of Salida, 20 minutes west, is famously dog-welcoming with patios on F Street. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your pet's size and breed so everyone starts on the same page.
fs.usda.gov/psiccCan the RV be delivered to a campground near Howard?
Yes, RV delivery in Howard is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many hosts in the Arkansas River Valley will drive the rig directly to popular spots like Hecla Junction Campground, Five Points Campground, or Rincon Recreation Site, then level it, hook up utilities, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is perfect if you'd rather skip towing or driving a big motorhome through Bighorn Sheep Canyon. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts offering this service. Pro tip: delivery fees are usually based on distance, so booking a rig already close to Howard saves money.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/ArkansasHeadwatersRecreationAreaHow far can I travel on an RV rental from Howard, CO?
You've got plenty of range. Mileage policies are set per listing, and many hosts on RVezy offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage packages, perfect for a Colorado road trip. From Howard, you're about 20 minutes from Salida, 1 hour from Buena Vista, 2.5 hours from Colorado Springs, 3 hours from Great Sand Dunes National Park, and roughly 3.5 hours from Denver. Mesa Verde is around 5 hours southwest if you want a bigger loop. Pro tip: check the mileage allowance on the listing page before booking, and if you're planning a long RV road trip from Howard, message the host to see if they offer a higher-mileage package upfront.
codot.gov/travelWhere are the best campgrounds near Howard, CO?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Howard sit right along the Arkansas River. Hecla Junction Campground (about 15 minutes west) offers riverside sites with vault toilets and is a rafter favorite. Five Points Campground east of town has paved pull-throughs and great canyon views. Rincon Recreation Site is another riverside gem with first-come, first-served sites. For full hookups, Pleasant Valley RV Park and Cottonwood Cove right in Howard are dependable choices. A bit further out, Mt. Princeton RV Park near Buena Vista pairs camping with hot springs. Pro tip: reserve Hecla Junction and Five Points up to six months ahead through Colorado Parks and Wildlife for summer weekends, they fill fast.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/ArkansasHeadwatersRecreationAreaWhen is the best time to visit Howard, CO in an RV?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Howard. Summer days run 75 to 85°F with cool 45 to 55°F nights, perfect for sleeping with windows open at 6,700 feet elevation. June and July bring peak Arkansas River rafting flows, while September delivers golden aspens along nearby Monarch Pass and far fewer crowds. Winters are surprisingly mild at this elevation compared to higher Colorado towns, but nighttime lows often drop into the teens, so most renters stick to May through October. Pro tip: late August through mid-September is the local sweet spot, warm rivers, ripe peaches at roadside stands in Penrose, and easier campground reservations.
weather.gov/pub/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Howard?
You'll be in great shape. First time renting an RV near Howard is easier than most people expect because Highway 50 through town is wide, well-maintained, and built for big rigs and rafting trailers. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, propane, slides, water systems, and dump procedures, so you won't be left guessing. If you're nervous about driving, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Howard, both handle like an oversized van. Pro tip: practice a few turns in the Salida Walmart parking lot before heading into Bighorn Sheep Canyon, and remember, you can always message your host mid-trip with questions.
codot.gov/travel/colorado-bywaysWhat happens if I have a breakdown near Howard?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 50 or the generator quits at Hecla Junction, one phone call gets help dispatched. Cell service is solid in Howard and along most of the Arkansas River corridor, though it can get spotty deeper in San Isabel National Forest. Your host is typically just a text away and knows the quirks of their rig better than anyone. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps for the Howard to Westcliffe and Cotopaxi areas before you leave town, it is a small step that makes a big difference if you wander off the main highway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Howard RV rental across state lines?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals, and Howard's central Colorado location makes it a fantastic launchpad. Popular cross-state routes include heading south to Taos, New Mexico (about 3 hours), west to Moab, Utah (around 5 hours for arches and red rock), or north to Wyoming's Grand Teton (roughly 8 hours). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations, so plan US-only itineraries. If you're considering Canada, message the host first since some allow it and some don't. Pro tip: a Howard to Moab to Mesa Verde loop is one of the most scenic week-long Colorado RV trips you can do.
nps.gov/arch/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Howard RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variable costs, but it's manageable. Class C motorhomes around Howard typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (often 10 to 14 MPG), and campervans can hit 18 to 22 MPG. Colorado gas prices in the Arkansas Valley tend to run slightly above the national average, with stations in Salida and Cañon City usually cheaper than smaller spots like Cotopaxi. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $150 to $220 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Salida or Cañon City before heading into the mountains, prices climb noticeably once you cross Monarch Pass or head toward Westcliffe.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Howard?
Earlier is better, especially for summer. Most Colorado state-managed sites along the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, including Hecla Junction and Five Points, open reservations six months in advance through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website, and prime June through August weekends often fill within hours of release. Private RV parks in Howard like Pleasant Valley and Cottonwood Cove typically book 2 to 4 months ahead for peak season. Shoulder seasons (May, late September, October) are far more relaxed, often you can grab a spot a week or two out. Pro tip: if everything looks booked, check Recreation.gov for nearby San Isabel National Forest sites, they're often overlooked and have stunning settings.
cpw.state.co.us/buyapply/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat are driving conditions like around Howard, CO?
Generally excellent. Highway 50 through Howard is a wide, well-maintained two-lane that follows the Arkansas River, making it one of the more relaxing mountain drives in Colorado. The main thing to watch for is Bighorn Sheep Canyon east of town, where curves tighten and rafting traffic picks up in summer, just take it steady. If you head west toward Monarch Pass (11,312 feet), expect a steep, winding climb that any well-maintained RV handles fine in low gear. Afternoon thunderstorms are common July through August, so plan to drive in the morning. Pro tip: check CDOT's COtrip app before crossing any pass, it gives live road conditions and webcam views that make planning easy.
codot.gov/travelWhat hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Howard offer?
You've got options ranging from full-service to rustic. Private RV parks in Howard like Pleasant Valley and Cottonwood Cove offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and laundry. Colorado Parks and Wildlife sites along the Arkansas (Hecla Junction, Rincon, Five Points) typically have vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings but no hookups, ideal if your rig has a generator and full tanks. Public dump stations are available in Salida and at the Salida East rest area. Potable water fills are easy to find in Salida and Cañon City. Pro tip: if you want hookups for half your trip and boondocking for the rest, base out of a Howard RV park midweek and grab a riverside site for the weekend.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/ArkansasHeadwatersRecreationAreaWhat's typically included inside RVs rented in Howard?
More than you'd expect. Most RV rentals in Howard come fully stocked: real beds with linens (or available as an add-on), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, pots, pans, and dishes, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, and often a TV with DVD or streaming setup. Many hosts include camp chairs, outdoor mats, and basic tools. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes usually have onboard generators for boondocking, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Wi-Fi varies, so check the listing. Pro tip: at 6,700 feet, Howard nights get crisp even in summer, so confirm the heater works during your walkthrough, and pack a couple of extra blankets just in case.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/ArkansasHeadwatersRecreationAreaWhat add-ons can I get with my Howard, CO RV rental?
Plenty of useful extras. Common add-ons on RVezy listings near Howard include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, bike racks, generators (sometimes included, sometimes $10 to $20 per day), portable grills, fishing gear, and even paddleboards or rafts, perfect for the Arkansas River. Pickup is usually at the host's location in Howard, Salida, or Cañon City, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary by listing, ranging from 100 free miles per day to fully unlimited. Pro tip: bundle linens, a kitchen kit, and outdoor chairs upfront, it's almost always cheaper than buying these in town, and saves you a stop at the Salida Walmart on day one.
colorado.com/cities-and-towns/howardHow does payment and the security deposit work?
It is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Howard through RVezy, payment is processed through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip starts (amount varies by listing) and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup, take photos of any existing dings, return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if required. Pro tip: ask your host for their preferred dump station, most recommend the one in Salida, which is quick and easy on your way back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-works
