Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Thurmont, MD
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Thurmont, MD?
RV rental in Thurmont, MD is surprisingly affordable, especially compared to nearby Washington, DC or Baltimore. On RVezy, you can expect travel trailers from roughly $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400 per night. Because hosts set their own pricing, you'll find plenty of cheap RV rental Thurmont options if you book midweek or in the shoulder seasons of April, May, September, and early October. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings near Frederick County, and message hosts about weekly discounts. Many owners shave 10 to 20 percent off for stays of five nights or more, which pairs perfectly with a full Catoctin Mountain Park exploration.
visitfrederick.org/listing/catoctin-mountain-park-campsites/2109/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Thurmont, MD?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Thurmont, MD. Maryland does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any RV-specific endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, no matter the size you'll find on RVezy. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association, usually under $20. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is, you book, upload your ID, and the host handles the rest at pickup.
mva.maryland.gov/drivers/Pages/license-classes.aspxWhat protection is included with my Thurmont RV rental?
Every RV rental in Thurmont, MD booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built into your booking, so you can head up Route 15 toward Catoctin Mountain Park with real peace of mind. Protection plans cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort at checkout. Higher-tier plans lower your responsibility for damage and add extra benefits, which is a smart pick for first-time renters exploring Cunningham Falls and the Catoctin overlooks. Roadside assistance is included on every plan, so help is one call away if you need it.

Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel before your trip start date, and the policy details are available in the RVezy Help Center so you know exactly what to expect. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund or travel credit. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip if questions come up. Pro tip: book early to lock in fall foliage week in mid-October, and review the cancellation policy at checkout so you understand your flexibility window.

They level the rig, hook up power and water where available, and walk you through every system before leaving. Gambrill State Park, about 20 minutes south near Frederick, has the Rock Run camp area for smaller rigs. Drive Inn Campground and Crystal Rock Campground on the Frederick County line round out the list. Pro tip: Cunningham Falls books up months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve early.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/cunninghamfalls.aspxWhen is the best time of year for RV camping Thurmont?
Thurmont sits in the Catoctin Mountains at roughly 500 to 1,800 feet of elevation, which gives it four real seasons and a longer comfortable camping window than you might expect. The sweet spot for RV camping Thurmont is late April through late October, when daytime highs run from the mid-60s in spring and fall to the mid-80s in summer, with cool 50-degree nights perfect for campfires. Mid-October is magical: fall foliage in the Catoctins typically peaks the second or third week, drawing leaf-peepers to the Thurmont Vista and Hog Rock overlooks. Pro tip: book May or September if you want warm days, fewer crowds, and the best chance at top-rated Cunningham Falls campsites.
weather.gov/lwx/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I be okay in Thurmont?
You're going to be just fine, Thurmont is one of the friendliest places in Maryland for first time renting an RV. Roads in and around town are wide and well-marked, and the routes to Catoctin Mountain Park (US-15 and MD-77) are gentle two-lane highways with clear signage. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to level the rig, run the fridge on propane or shore power, dump tanks, and use the awning. You'll leave with their phone number and step-by-step notes. If anything feels confusing on the road, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking. Pro tip: ask your host to record a quick video of the systems demo so you can replay it at camp.
nps.gov/cato/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You're never on your own, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance from the moment you pick up the rig until you return it. If you get a flat on Route 77 heading toward Catoctin Mountain Park, lose power at Owens Creek Campground, or run into a mechanical issue near Cunningham Falls, one phone call dispatches help to your exact location. Your host is also typically a quick call or message away, since most are local to Frederick County and know the area cold. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after every trip too. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave home, cell service can dip in pockets of the Catoctins.
roads.maryland.gov/Index.aspxCan I take my RV rental across state lines or into Canada from Thurmont?
Yes, interstate travel from Thurmont is allowed and most RVezy hosts welcome trips into Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and beyond. Gettysburg, PA is about 20 miles up Route 15, Harpers Ferry, WV is roughly a 45-minute drive, and Shenandoah National Park is under two hours south. Travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the host and insurance coverage, so confirm directly with your host through RVezy messaging before booking if a cross-border trip is on your list. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a classic MD-PA-WV-VA loop from Thurmont strings together four national parks and battlefields in under 300 miles.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Thurmont RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on any Thurmont RV trip, but it's easy to estimate. Maryland gas prices typically run a few cents above the national average, and you'll find competitive stations along US-15 in Thurmont and Frederick. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, but the tow vehicle averages 9 to 12 miles per gallon. Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 mpg, while Class B campervans can reach 16 to 20 mpg. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop (Thurmont-Gettysburg-Harpers Ferry-Thurmont), budget roughly $80 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Thurmont before heading west on MD-77, prices climb at the smaller stations closer to the park.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Thurmont?
For the best campgrounds near Thurmont, book as early as you can, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage in October. Maryland State Parks (including Cunningham Falls) accepts reservations up to one year in advance, and Recreation.gov, which handles Catoctin Mountain Park's Owens Creek and Camp Misty Mount, opens reservations up to six months out. Popular sites at Houck and Manor at Cunningham Falls often fill within minutes of release for July, August, and the peak foliage weekend in mid-October. Pro tip: if you strike out, check Recreation.gov daily for cancellations, and consider midweek arrivals, Tuesday through Thursday sites are dramatically easier to land.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/247762What are driving conditions like around Thurmont for a larger RV?
Driving around Thurmont is refreshingly low-stress for an RV. US-15 is a divided four-lane highway with generous shoulders, and MD-77 (the main approach to Catoctin Mountain Park) is a winding but well-maintained two-lane road, take it at posted speeds and you'll be comfortable in anything up to a Class A. Watch for two things: Foxville-Deerfield Road tightens as you near Owens Creek Campground, and some Catoctin overlook pull-offs are short (better skipped in rigs over 28 feet). Winter (December-February) can bring snow and ice at elevation. Pro tip: if you're nervous about mountain switchbacks, choose RV delivery Thurmont from your host and let them handle the drive to camp.

Campgrounds near Thurmont range from full-hookup to delightfully primitive, so there's something for every RV style. Cunningham Falls State Park (Houck and Manor areas) offers electric hookups at most sites, flush toilets, hot showers, potable water spigots, and a dump station, perfect for medium and large rigs. Owens Creek Campground inside Catoctin Mountain Park has no hookups but provides flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, fire rings, and picnic tables; the closest dump station is at neighboring Cunningham Falls State Park. Private parks like Crystal Rock and Drive Inn add full water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading into Owens Creek, and dump tanks at Cunningham Falls on your way out, it's only a few minutes between them.
nps.gov/cato/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's typically included inside a Thurmont RV rental?
Motorhome rental Thurmont options on RVezy come stocked for real camping, not just driving. Expect a full kitchen with a propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and basic cookware; a bathroom with a toilet and shower; comfortable beds (queen or king in many Class C and travel trailers, plus convertible dinettes for kids); a roof-mounted air conditioner; a furnace for those crisp Catoctin nights; and seatbelts for travel passengers in motorhomes. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, outdoor chairs, a propane grill, and even leveling blocks. Wi-Fi and generators are common add-ons, useful since Owens Creek has no electric hookups. Pro tip: read the listing's amenities list carefully and message your host to confirm linens and kitchen kits, most include them free, but a few charge a small fee.
nps.gov/cato/planyourvisit/things2do.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts who rent an RV in Thurmont typically offer a handful of useful add-ons during booking: linens and bedding packages, kitchen kits, outdoor furniture, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees if you're bringing the dog. Mileage policies usually include 100 to 150 free miles per day with extra miles around $0.30 to $0.50, and some Frederick County hosts offer truly unlimited mileage, look for the unlimited-mileage badge. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Thurmont, with delivery available for an added fee that scales by distance. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator if you're heading to Owens Creek Campground, since the no-hookup site means you'll want a power source for coffee, devices, and cool nights.
visitfrederick.org/things-to-do/outdoor/camping/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay RVezy directly through the platform when you book your campervan rental in Thurmont or motorhome, never the host in cash. Your booking total covers the nightly rate, taxes, fees, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons you have selected. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is placed as a temporary hold on your card before pickup, with the amount depending on the RV and protection level. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition with no damage, mileage overages, or extra cleaning needed, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video at both pickup and drop-off to protect your deposit and make your next Thurmont family RV trip even smoother.
