Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Summit, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Summit, NJ?
RV rental in Summit is more affordable than most people expect, with nightly rates typically ranging from about $95 for a compact travel trailer up to $350 for a fully loaded Class A motorhome. Campervans and smaller Class C motorhomes usually land in the $150 to $225 per night range. To score a cheap RV rental in Summit, book midweek pickups, travel in May or late September for shoulder-season pricing, and use the price filter on RVezy to set your nightly budget. Many Summit-area hosts also offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, so a Tuesday-to-Tuesday Jersey Shore trip can be a real bargain.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Summit,%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Summit, NJ?
Your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Summit. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License for personal-use recreational vehicles, so even a large Class A motorhome can be driven on a standard Class D license. On RVezy, the approved driver must be 25 or older, and ID is verified securely inside the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home-country license and you are ready to roll toward the Jersey Shore or the Delaware Water Gap.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection or insurance is included with my Summit RV rental?
You can book with confidence because every RV rental in Summit on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, no separate purchase required. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip. During checkout you choose the level of protection that fits your trip so you control your deductible and coverage limits, and hosts do not pick this for you. That means you can hit Route 78 toward the Poconos or cruise down the Garden State Parkway knowing you are backed up if something unexpected happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every Summit RV rental, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without stress. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, which is helpful in a region that can see the occasional nor'easter. You will see the full policy details during checkout and inside your booking dashboard. Book early to grab the best Summit-area Class C motorhomes for summer Jersey Shore weekends, then relax knowing you are covered if life shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Summit, NJ?
Yes, your dog is welcome on the trip. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Summit, turn on the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see only listings whose hosts allow pets. Once you arrive, Summit is a dog lover's launchpad: leashed pets are allowed on the trails of the roughly 2,000-acre Watchung Reservation just minutes away, and Tamaques Park in nearby Westfield has a popular fenced dog run. For overnight stays, Cheesequake State Park and Spruce Run Recreation Area both welcome leashed pets in their campgrounds. Message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/cheesequake.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in Summit, NJ?
Yes, RV delivery in Summit is one of the most popular options on the platform and a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the rig straight to your campground, driveway, or a nearby trailhead, then set up the slide-outs, hookups, and awning and walk you through every system before they leave. Toggle the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination, whether that is Cheesequake State Park, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, or a backyard in Berkeley Heights. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host. Delivery is especially smart for trips to Manhattan-adjacent campgrounds, since you skip city driving entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106154-RV-deliveryHow far can I drive, and what about mileage limits?
You have plenty of range to play with on a Summit RV trip. Most hosts on RVezy include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great for longer hauls. Real distances from Summit: about 25 miles to Manhattan, 90 miles to Atlantic City, 100 miles to the Pocono Mountains, 130 miles to Philadelphia, and roughly 240 miles to the Finger Lakes. Extra miles, when they apply, typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each. Filter listings by Unlimited Mileage if you are planning a big RV road trip from Summit up to Niagara Falls or down through the Outer Banks, and confirm the daily allowance on the listing before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Summit,%20New%20JerseyWhere can I stay overnight in an RV near Summit, NJ?
You have great options for where to park an RV near Summit, even though the city itself is residential. Within an hour's drive you will find Cheesequake State Park in Matawan (about 35 miles southeast, with water and electric sites), Spruce Run Recreation Area in Clinton (35 miles west, lakeside camping), Round Valley Recreation Area near Lebanon (40 miles southwest, reservoir views), Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson (about 30 miles northwest, in Morris County), and Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City (25 miles east, with Manhattan skyline views). Heads-up about parking inside Summit itself: city ordinances restrict overnight on-street parking, so plan to stage your rig at a campground or a host's private driveway.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/camping.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Summit, NJ?
You really do get four seasons here, and the sweet spot for a Summit RV trip is late April through mid-October. May and June bring 65 to 80 degree days, blooming dogwoods, and quieter campgrounds. July and August are peak Jersey Shore season with highs in the mid-80s and humid nights, perfect for AC-equipped rentals. September and October are the local insider favorite: crisp 50 to 70 degree weather, fall foliage across the Watchung Reservation, and apple-picking in Hunterdon County. Winter motorhome rentals from Summit are possible too, with some hosts offering four-season, heated-tank rigs for ski runs to the Poconos. Confirm winterization on the listing.
weather.gov/phi/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
Absolutely. First time renting an RV is more common than you think, and Summit hosts make it easy. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, generator startup, slide-outs, holding tanks, and the propane system before you leave with the keys. For nervous first-timers, choose a Class B campervan or a 24-foot Class C motorhome rather than a 35-foot Class A, especially since Summit's tree-lined streets reward smaller rigs. Book a host who offers delivery to your first campground (Spruce Run is a gentle starter), so your maiden drive is from a state park, not down Springfield Avenue at rush hour.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Summit booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. If anything happens on I-78, the Garden State Parkway, or a country road in the Delaware Water Gap, you call one number and help is dispatched. Your host is also typically reachable through the RVezy app for questions about quirks specific to their rig, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Snap a photo of the roadside assistance number at pickup so it is handy if you lose cell signal in the Kittatinny Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Summit RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on RV camping trips from Summit. Hosts on RVezy generally allow travel throughout the continental United States, so popular routes like the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania (about 90 miles), Cape Cod in Massachusetts (about 250 miles), Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (about 280 miles), and the Finger Lakes in New York (about 240 miles) are all on the table. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and an insurance confirmation, so message the host before booking if Niagara Falls or Montreal is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Budgeting is easier than you think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, and big Class A rigs typically deliver 7 to 10 MPG, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. New Jersey gas prices generally hover near the national average, and stations along Route 22 and I-78 just outside Summit are usually a few cents cheaper than downtown options. A weekend round-trip from Summit to the Delaware Water Gap is about 180 miles total, roughly $55 to $90 in fuel for most rentals. Note that New Jersey is a full-service state by law, so an attendant pumps your gas while you stay seated.
nj.gov/oag/newsreleases19/pr20190806a.htmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near Summit?
You will have the best luck booking campgrounds 3 to 6 months in advance for any summer weekend within an hour of Summit. New Jersey state park sites such as Cheesequake, Spruce Run, Round Valley, and Stephens open reservations through the New Jersey State Park Service reservation portal, and prime July and August Saturdays at Cheesequake fill within minutes of opening. County and private parks like Mahlon Dickerson Reservation and Liberty Harbor RV Park have their own systems and typically need 1 to 3 months lead time. Midweek Tuesday-to-Thursday stays are often wide open even in peak season, so a Summit RV trip from Wednesday through Friday is the local insider move.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Summit?
Driving an RV around Summit is manageable with a little planning. Summit sits in Union County between I-78 and Route 24, both wide highways that handle big rigs comfortably. Avoid the Springfield Avenue and Broad Street downtown corridor in your motorhome during the 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. commuter rush, and skip the low NJ Transit train trestles on River Road. Stick to I-78 west toward the Delaware Water Gap or the Garden State Parkway south toward the Shore (RVs are restricted from the parkway north of exit 105). Watch for summer thunderstorms and the occasional winter snowstorm. Most rigs under 13 feet 6 inches tall clear standard interstate underpasses in the region.
511nj.org/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Summit, NJ?
You will find a great mix. Among the best campgrounds near Summit, Cheesequake State Park offers water and electric hookups, hot showers, and a dump station; Spruce Run Recreation Area has electric sites, lakefront swimming, and a dump station; Mahlon Dickerson Reservation provides electric and some full-hookup sites; and Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City has full hookups with Wi-Fi and Manhattan ferry access. Most New Jersey state parks have a centralized dump station and potable water fill near the campground entrance, included in your site fee. Fill your fresh water tank before leaving the host's driveway in Summit, since not every state park site has individual water hookups, and bring a 25-foot drinking-safe hose.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/cheesequake.htmlWhat features and amenities come with a typical Summit RV rental?
You will be impressed by how loaded these rigs are. A standard campervan rental or Class C motorhome rental in Summit typically includes a queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning, a propane furnace, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone on board. Many listings also include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, and an onboard generator or solar setup, with some offering Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Family RV trip favorites near Summit sleep 4 to 7 people. Check the listing's Sleeps filter and photo gallery to confirm bed configurations.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Summit,%20New%20JerseyWhat popular add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and drop-off work?
You can customize your trip. Popular add-ons from Summit-area hosts include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($40 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes ($25 to $50), generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Summit, Berkeley Heights, Springfield, or New Providence, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough included. Drop-off mirrors pickup, with tanks expected dumped and the rig refueled. Mileage policies are set per listing, commonly 100 free miles per night with $0.35 per extra mile. Book the delivery add-on if you are heading straight to Liberty Harbor RV Park, so you skip Jersey City traffic entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106154-RV-deliveryHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your transaction protected and traceable. A refundable security deposit is placed as an authorization hold on your card around the time of pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig, and it is released after drop-off once the host confirms there is no damage, missed dumping fee, or excess mileage. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround video at pickup, return with a full fuel tank and empty waste tanks, and stay within your mileage allowance. Use a credit card with a generous limit for the deposit hold so your day-to-day spending on the trip is not affected.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksI am nervous about driving an RV into New York City. What are my options?
Smart instinct, and you have an easy workaround. Summit sits just 25 miles from Manhattan, but you really do not want to drive a motorhome into Midtown, where tolls, parkway height limits, and tight streets make it stressful. Instead, park at Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City (full hookups, Manhattan skyline views), then take the PATH train or NY Waterway ferry into the city in under 15 minutes. Want zero city driving? Book a Summit host who offers RV delivery directly to Liberty Harbor. The Watchung Reservation, Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and South Mountain Reservation are all within 15 miles of Summit if you want nature instead of skyscrapers.
