We had an amazing experience renting this camper van for the weekend! The van was clean, comfortable, spacious, and thoughtfully equipped with everything we needed. It easily carried all of our gear, including a cooler and fishing poles, with plenty of room to spare. It truly had all the comforts of home—and more. From the kitchen essentials to the camping accessories, everything was provided, making our trip easy and enjoyable. Mark, the owner, was fantastic to work with. He took the time to thoroughly show us how to operate the van and explained all of its features and accessories before we left. His attention to detail and willingness to answer our questions made us feel confident and well prepared for our trip. We couldn’t have asked for a better rental experience. If you’re looking for a well-equipped camper van and an owner who genuinely cares about his renters, we highly recommend renting from Mark. We would definitely rent from him again!

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Melville, NY

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Melville, NY?

RV rental in Melville is surprisingly affordable when you factor in lodging, transportation, and dining all in one. Travel trailers average around $150 per night, while motorhome rentals near Melville typically run about $225 per night, and many hosts offer 10 to 20 percent discounts on weekly and monthly bookings. To find a cheap RV rental in Melville, aim for shoulder months like late April, May, or October when summer Hamptons demand cools off, then use the price filter to sort by budget. Pro tip: booking a travel trailer with delivery often beats a self-drive motorhome on total cost, since you skip mileage fees and the stress of driving the Long Island Expressway.

What license do I need to rent an RV in Melville, NY?

Good news: a regular New York State driver's license (or any valid US or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Melville. There is no special RV endorsement or commercial driver's license required for Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, or travel trailers on RVezy, even most Class A units. Approved drivers generally need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there is no extra DMV paperwork. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto club before flying in. Once you are approved, you are cleared to roll from Melville out to Montauk or up to the Catskills.

Is protection included when I rent an RV in Melville?

Yes, every RV rental in Melville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. The protection plan helps cover most physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, giving you serious peace of mind whether you are parked at Heckscher State Park or navigating the Long Island Expressway. You choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host, so you can pick the tier that matches your comfort level. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it is the safety net that makes a first-time motorhome rental in Melville feel a lot less intimidating. Lock it in at booking and focus on the trip.

What is the cancellation policy if my Melville RV trip plans change?

You can book your Melville RV trip with confidence, because RVezy (not the individual host) sets a clear, renter-friendly cancellation policy that applies to every reservation on the platform. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, plus additional flexibility based on how far out you cancel. Because RVezy handles the policy centrally, you do not have to decode different rules on every listing, and the policy is not displayed on individual host listings. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you are never left scrambling. If your plans shift, open your trip in the RVezy dashboard or message support and they will walk you through the options.

Can I bring my dog on a Melville RV rental?

Absolutely, and Long Island is a fantastic place for it. Many hosts offering pet-friendly RV rental in Melville welcome dogs on board, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them instantly. From Melville, you are 15 minutes from West Hills County Park's leash-friendly trails (Long Island's highest point at 401 feet), and about an hour east to the dog-friendly off-season beaches at Cupsogue and Smith Point County Park. Most Suffolk County campgrounds allow leashed dogs at RV sites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and to ask about their preferred cleanup routine, and pack a portable water bowl for those humid Long Island summer afternoons.

Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Melville?

Yes, RV delivery in Melville is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-time renter or planning to base yourself at a single campground. Many Melville-area hosts deliver and set up at campgrounds across Long Island, including Heckscher State Park in East Islip, Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage, and Wildwood State Park in Wading River, plus private driveways for stationary stays. The host meets you on site, levels the rig, hooks up power and water, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees are set by each host based on distance and RV type. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see your options instantly.

How far can I drive on a Melville RV trip?

Plenty far, Melville's central Long Island location makes it a perfect launchpad. From Melville you are about 75 miles (roughly 2 hours without traffic) east to Montauk Point at the tip of the South Fork, around 130 miles to the Catskills, 220 miles north to the Adirondacks, and 120 miles up to Mystic, Connecticut via the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry. Each host sets their own mileage policy: some offer a generous daily allowance, others provide RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer RV road trip from Melville. Check the listing's mileage section before booking, and if you are planning a big loop, message the host about a custom package. Pro tip: the ferry saves hours versus driving through NYC.

Where are the best campgrounds near Melville, NY?

You've got some genuinely beautiful options within an hour of Melville. Heckscher State Park in East Islip (about 20 minutes south) offers 69 RV sites near the Great South Bay. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage (15 minutes west) is a year-round Nassau County park with electric hookups and pull-throughs. Wildwood State Park in Wading River (about 45 minutes east) sits on 600 acres of forest overlooking Long Island Sound. For a Hamptons-area RV camping Melville base, Cedar Point County Park in East Hampton is a favorite, and Hither Hills State Park in Montauk is legendary for oceanfront sites. Reserve state park sites through ReserveAmerica and Suffolk County sites through the county system, both open 9 months ahead.

When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Melville?

Late May through mid-October is prime time for a Melville RV trip, but the sweet spot is actually June and September. Summer highs in Melville average 82 to 85°F with humid days and warm nights perfect for beach camping, while shoulder months bring 65 to 75°F days, fewer mosquitoes, and dramatically lower campground demand. Fall foliage peaks mid-October on the North Fork wine trail and is breathtaking. Winters are cold (averaging 25 to 40°F) with occasional nor'easters, but several hosts rent year-round for off-season Hamptons getaways or NYC-adjacent stays. Pro tip: book July and August Long Island state park sites the moment the 9-month reservation window opens, beach sites disappear within minutes.

I've never rented an RV before. Is Melville a good place to start?

Melville is a great spot for a first time renting an RV, because you can lean on host support and avoid the toughest driving entirely. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, slide-outs, leveling, tanks, and the generator, with no time pressure. If city driving worries you, choose a host who delivers directly to your campground so you never touch the Long Island Expressway in a 30-foot rig. Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Melville for an easier learning curve. Book a 2-night shakedown at Heckscher State Park (just 20 minutes south) before tackling a longer trip east to Montauk. You've got this.

What happens if something breaks down during my Melville RV rental?

You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are on the LIE, parked at Wildwood State Park, or out near Montauk. Roadside support covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to a service location. Your host is also a direct resource: most Melville-area hosts answer the phone quickly and can walk you through small fixes like resetting a GFCI outlet or relighting a water heater. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip too. Save the roadside number to your phone at pickup and roll out worry-free.

Can I take my Melville RV rental into Canada or other states?

Multi-state RV road trips from Melville are very doable, you can head south through New Jersey to Cape May, north into the Catskills and Adirondacks, or east via the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point into Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Cape Cod. Many hosts also allow trips into Canada (great for a Niagara Falls or Montreal run), but you'll want to confirm cross-border permission in writing before booking since insurance documentation is required at the border. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: if you're crossing into Canada, ask the host to provide a signed travel authorization letter, and bring your passport plus the RV registration.

What kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?

Plan realistically and you'll avoid sticker shock. Class C motorhomes near Melville typically get 8 to 12 mpg on regular gas, Class A units 6 to 10 mpg, and Class B campervans 16 to 20 mpg, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. New York gas prices on Long Island tend to run about 20 to 40 cents above the national average, so budget around $4.00 to $4.50 per gallon as of 2026. For a Melville-to-Montauk round trip (about 150 miles), expect $50 to $90 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up off-Island before crossing back through Queens, prices drop noticeably once you leave Nassau and Suffolk counties.

How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Melville?

Book early, Long Island campground demand is intense. New York State Parks (Heckscher, Wildwood, Hither Hills) open reservations exactly 9 months ahead through ReserveAmerica, and waterfront sites for July and August weekends often sell out within the first hour. Suffolk County Parks (Cedar Point, Indian Island, Smith Point, Cupsogue) use the county's online reservation system and also fill quickly for summer. For shoulder season (May, June, September, October) you can usually grab sites 2 to 6 weeks ahead. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage accepts reservations year-round and often has midweek availability. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 9 months before your target date and book the minute the window opens at 9 a.m. ET.

What are driving conditions like around Melville for an RV?

Honest take: Melville's location on Route 110 and the Long Island Expressway (I-495) means you can avoid the trickiest driving entirely with smart planning. The LIE gets heavy weekday traffic between 6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., so aim to roll out midmorning or after dinner. Parkways like the Northern State, Southern State, Sagtikos, and Wantagh are off-limits to RVs due to low bridge clearances (some under 8 feet), stick to I-495, Route 25, Route 25A, and Sunrise Highway (Route 27). Avoid driving into NYC; instead head east toward the forks. Use a truck-specific GPS or RV Trip Wizard, and you'll have smooth sailing to the Hamptons.

What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Melville?

Long Island campgrounds are well-equipped overall. Most state and county parks near Melville offer electric hookups (20/30 amp, occasionally 50 amp), potable water fill stations, dump stations, hot showers, flush toilets, and picnic tables with fire rings at each site. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage offers electric and water hookups; Wildwood State Park has electric sites plus a dump station; Heckscher State Park provides electric hookups at trailer sites. Full sewer hookups at the site are rare on Long Island, plan to use the dump station on departure. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank at home or at the campground entrance before parking, and bring a 25-foot drinking-water-safe hose plus a basic water pressure regulator.

What's inside a typical Melville RV rental?

Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. Most motorhome rental Melville listings include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a kitchen with a 3-burner stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower. Standard amenities include roof air conditioning, propane furnace, awning, outdoor speakers, and seatbelted passenger seats. Many rigs include a generator, solar panel, backup camera, flat-screen TV, and Wi-Fi or cellular booster, though Wi-Fi reliability depends on cell signal. Hosts often add starter kits with linens, pots and pans, and basic cookware. Check the Amenities tab on each listing, and message the host if a specific item like a coffee maker or BBQ matters to you.
rvia.org/

What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

Hosts offering RV rental in Melville typically provide a menu of useful add-ons: linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane refills, generator hours, bike racks, kayaks, portable BBQs, and pet cleaning fees. Many offer flat-rate delivery to Long Island campgrounds and even self-park stays in your driveway. Mileage policies vary: some listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, others offer unlimited mileage perfect for a family RV trip Melville to Niagara Falls. Generator hours are usually capped at 2 to 4 free hours per day off-grid. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package up front; it's almost always cheaper than buying these separately on the road.

How does payment and the security deposit work?

Payment is simple and secure: RVezy charges your card through the platform when you book, with the trip total (rental, fees, protection, taxes) clearly itemized before you confirm. You do not pay the host directly in cash, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (usually a few days before pickup) to cover any incidentals like missing equipment, smoking violations, or excess mileage. As long as you return the RV in the same condition you received it, the hold is released after the trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, it is the easiest way to keep your full deposit refund moving without friction.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-works

Can I park or store an RV in Melville overnight if I'm not at a campground?

Yes, with some smart planning. The Town of Huntington (which covers Melville) allows RVs and trailers on residential property under local zoning, but on-street overnight parking is restricted, so plan to keep the rig in a private driveway during your trip. For overnight stops between destinations, Long Island Walmart and Cabela's locations generally don't allow overnight RV parking due to local ordinances, so book a campground or a private driveway through a host site instead. Heckscher State Park (20 minutes south) is the closest legal overnight option with hookups. If you need long-term storage post-trip, several Suffolk County storage yards offer monthly RV spots. Pro tip: confirm driveway parking with your host before arrival to avoid any HOA surprises.
