He was incredibly responsive to our needs and questions, and was very flexible to our situation and always very accommodating. Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Beaufort, SC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Beaufort, SC?
RV rental in Beaufort, SC is one of the more affordable Lowcountry getaways. On RVezy, towable travel trailers and pop-ups typically average around $100 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run about $175 to $250 per night, and larger Class A rigs start near $250 and up. Many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts, so a 7-night Sea Islands trip often beats stacking a hotel plus a rental car. Tip: book mid-week stays in late September or October when summer crowds clear out but the Atlantic is still warm enough to swim, and you will lock in strong value.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Beaufort%2C%20South%20CarolinaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Beaufort?
Good news, no special license is needed for the vast majority of RVs you will rent in Beaufort. South Carolina only requires a Class E or Class F non-commercial license for motorhomes over 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), and virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on RVezy falls well under that threshold. A standard driver's license from any U.S. state or Canadian province is all you need. You also need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform, so the whole process takes minutes. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit before your trip and you are set.
scdmvonline.com/Driver-Services/Drivers-License/Non-Commercial-License---Classes-E-FWhat protection or coverage is included with my RV rental?
Every RV rental in Beaufort booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are never out there alone. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (hosts do not set this). Combined with your host's pre-trip walkthrough, you can hit Highway 21 toward Hunting Island feeling fully supported, especially helpful if it is your first time renting an RV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change, can I cancel my Beaufort RV booking?
Booking your Beaufort RV trip is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a grace period after booking when you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that, the refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel. You will see the exact terms during checkout. The bottom line: you can lock in that fall trip to the Sea Islands now and still have flexibility if life changes. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Beaufort?
Yes, plenty of hosts welcome pups. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see every host who allows dogs (some welcome cats and other pets too). Beaufort is one of the most dog-loving towns in the Lowcountry: Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park downtown welcomes leashed dogs, and Hunting Island State Park allows pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet in the campground and on most beach areas outside the protected shorebird zone. Tip: message the host to confirm any pet fee before you book so check-in is seamless.
southcarolinaparks.com/hunting-island/introductionCan the RV be delivered to my campground or vacation rental?
Yes, RV delivery Beaufort is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to Hunting Island State Park, Tuck in the Wood Campground in Port Royal, or a private driveway on Lady's Island, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Just use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service. Pro tip: ask about delivery to Hunting Island specifically, since the park's sites fill fast and having the RV pre-parked is a huge stress saver.
southcarolinaparks.com/hunting-island/campingHow far can I drive, and what are mileage policies like?
You have great range from Beaufort for an RV trip. Each host sets their own mileage policy: some offer unlimited mileage (perfect for road-trippers), others include 100 to 150 miles per day with a small per-mile fee after that. Beaufort is centrally located: Charleston is about 70 miles north, Savannah, GA is roughly 45 miles south, and Hilton Head Island is about 35 miles southeast. If you are planning a bigger loop, filter listings for RV rental with unlimited mileage so you can roam Charleston, the Lowcountry, or coastal Georgia without watching the odometer.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Beaufort%2C%20South%20CarolinaWhere are the best campgrounds near Beaufort, SC?
Beaufort is spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Beaufort options. The best campgrounds near Beaufort, SC include: Hunting Island State Park on St. Helena Island (16 miles east, beachfront sites with water and 50-amp electric, the only publicly accessible historic lighthouse in SC), Tuck in the Wood Campground in Port Royal (full hookups under a canopy of live oaks just 10 minutes from downtown), Point South KOA Holiday in Yemassee (off I-95 Exit 33, pool and pull-throughs), and Lake Jasper RV Village in Hardeeville (lakeside, midway to Savannah). Sites at Hunting Island require a 2-night minimum and book up to 13 months out, so reserve early.
southcarolinaparks.com/hunting-island/campingWhen is the best time to visit Beaufort in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Beaufort SC RV trip is mid-April through early June and again from September through mid-November. During those windows, daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s and low 80s, humidity backs off, and the no-see-ums (Beaufort's famous biting midges) calm way down. October and early November are the driest months of the year, with just 1 to 2 rainy days per week on average. Summer (June through August) brings 90 degree highs, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and peak hurricane season. Winter is mild (highs in the low 60s, lows in the 40s) and most local campgrounds stay open year-round, making December a hidden-gem month for the historic district.
weather.gov/chs/climateI have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, and Beaufort is honestly one of the friendliest places in America to learn. Every host on RVezy provides a hands-on orientation at pickup that covers driving, leveling, the generator, slide-outs, holding tanks, and the propane system, so you are not figuring anything out alone. They are also a text away during your entire trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is built into every booking. The roads here are flat, traffic is light outside of Charleston and Savannah, and US-21 east to Hunting Island is a wide, scenic two-lane drive with very little stress. Most first-time renters feel completely comfortable within the first 30 minutes behind the wheel.
scdot.org/travel/travel-driving-tips.aspxWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Beaufort booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat tire on Sea Island Parkway, lock yourself out at Hunting Island, or run into a battery issue at Tuck in the Wood, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is reachable directly through the RVezy app to walk you through the smaller stuff (think pilot lights or a tripped breaker), and RVezy customer support is available throughout your trip. Tip: snap a quick photo of the fuse panel and propane shutoff during your walkthrough as an easy reference.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes, interstate travel is part of the fun of an RV road trip from Beaufort. Most hosts allow trips into Georgia (Savannah is just 45 miles south), North Carolina (Asheville and the Outer Banks are popular runs), and Florida (St. Augustine is about a 4-hour drive). Canada trips may be possible with host approval depending on their insurance, so message the host first. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular routes from Beaufort include the coastal US-17 run to Charleston and the I-95 corridor to St. Augustine.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Plan ahead and you will not be surprised at the pump. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but typically knock 3 to 5 MPG off your truck's normal rate. South Carolina has some of the lowest gas prices in the country (often 30 to 50 cents below the national average), so fueling up in Beaufort or at the Parker's on Robert Smalls Parkway before you leave town stretches your dollar. For a 300-mile loop in a Class C, budget around $100 to $130 in fuel.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground?
For Hunting Island State Park, the answer is: as early as possible. South Carolina State Parks open reservations 13 months in advance and Hunting Island is the most popular state park in SC, with over a million visitors a year. Summer weekends and the entire month of October sell out within days of opening. There is a 2-night minimum stay, and same-day bookings must be done by calling the park at 843-838-2011. For private campgrounds like Tuck in the Wood or Point South KOA, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty outside of peak season. Pro tip: if Hunting Island is full, set up a cancellation alert and check the reservation site on Tuesday mornings when bookings often turn over.
southcarolinaparks.com/hunting-island/campingWhat are the local driving conditions like around Beaufort?
Driving an RV around Beaufort is genuinely relaxing compared to most coastal destinations. The terrain is flat as a pancake, roads are wide, and traffic outside of Ribaut Road and US-21 rush hour is minimal. The main routes you will use, US-21 to Hunting Island, SC-170 to Hilton Head, and US-17 north to Charleston, are well-marked and RV-friendly. A few local heads-ups: the Woods Memorial Bridge to Lady's Island is a swing bridge that opens hourly on weekends in summer, so factor in 10 to 15 minutes. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can be intense but brief. Watch for deer at dusk on Sea Island Parkway, and remember most of the historic downtown's narrow side streets are not RV-friendly, stick to Bay Street and Boundary Street.
www511.scdot.org/What amenities will I find at local campgrounds, and where can I dump and fill water?
You will be comfortable. Most campgrounds around Beaufort offer 20/30/50-amp electric service and water hookups; full hookups (including sewer) are standard at private parks like Tuck in the Wood, Point South KOA, and Lake Jasper RV Village. Hunting Island State Park has water and electric at the sites but no individual sewer, and it operates a free dump station near the campground exit that all registered campers can use. Beaufort also has a public RV dump at the Beaufort County Public Works facility on Shanklin Road by appointment. Most parks have hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi (variable strength), and camp stores. For groceries and ice, the Publix on Robert Smalls Parkway is the closest one-stop shop to most campgrounds.
beaufortcountysc.gov/public-works/What should I expect inside the RV: beds, kitchen, bathroom, Wi-Fi?
More than you might think. Most motorhome rentals in Beaufort come fully equipped: a queen or king bed, extra sleeping in convertible dinettes or bunks, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet. Air conditioning is standard and essential, since Lowcountry summers reach 90 degrees with high humidity. Many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor shower (great for sandy feet after Hunting Island), generator, and seatbelted travel seating. Wi-Fi varies, but cell coverage is strong throughout Beaufort and St. Helena, so a hotspot works well. Check each listing's amenities to match your must-haves.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Beaufort%2C%20South%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts in Beaufort offer some genuinely useful add-ons: bedding and linens packs ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, kayaks (popular for the saltmarsh creeks around Lady's Island), generators, and propane fill. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, typically $2 to $5 per mile round-trip with a flat setup fee, and worth every penny for first-timers. Pickup usually happens at the host's home or driveway in Beaufort, Port Royal, Lady's Island, or Bluffton, and most hosts include a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough at no extra cost. Pro tip: ask about generator hours for boondocking, since Hunting Island restricts generator use to certain hours.
southcarolinaparks.com/hunting-island/campingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay entirely through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, no cash, no awkward handoffs with the host. A separate security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after dropoff once the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues: take time-stamped photos and a quick video at pickup and dropoff (most hosts do this with you), refill fuel and propane to the level shown at pickup, empty the black and gray tanks if your agreement requires it, and return on time.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in Beaufort overnight outside of a campground?
Quick heads-up worth knowing before you arrive: overnight RV camping inside Beaufort city limits is not allowed by city ordinance, so plan to base yourself at a nearby campground rather than a downtown street or private driveway in the historic district. The good news is you are surrounded by great options within 10 to 20 minutes: Tuck in the Wood Campground in Port Royal, Hunting Island State Park on St. Helena, and several private parks toward Yemassee and Hardeeville. During the day, downtown Beaufort has more than 500 public parking spaces, though most are sized for cars. Pro tip: park the RV at your campground and use the free Beaufort Water Taxi or rideshare to explore Bay Street, it is the easiest way to do downtown.
