Levi made it real easy to rent his trailer, as well as do the walk through at a separate time. This was my first time with an RV with a black tank, so I sprung for his "Trailer 101" extra. It was well worth it, as it made me confident of a "no mishap" first cleaning. The unit towed nicely, and was great for the rain. The insulation in the roof muffled the rain nicely. And the heater did a great job keeping the inside comfortable. Easy pick up and drop off location.

Plan for most motorhomes to deliver 8 to 12 miles per gallon, while smaller campervan rentals in Clearlake can reach 14 to 18 mpg. Fuel prices in Lake County tend to run slightly above the California average, so it is often cheaper to fill up in larger towns like Ukiah, Santa Rosa, or Napa before heading back. For a 300-mile loop, budget roughly $130 to $200 in fuel depending on the RV. Check current California gas prices through the California Energy Commission before you go.

For top Clearlake campgrounds, reserve at least 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays. Clear Lake State Park and other California State Parks accept reservations up to six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia. Midweek and shoulder-season stays usually have much better availability. Lakefront and full-hookup sites sell out first, so book those as soon as your dates are confirmed. Private parks like Konocti Vista and Edgewater Resort take reservations directly on their websites.

What are the local driving conditions like in Clearlake and surrounding areas?

Driving around Clearlake is generally relaxed. Highway 20 and Highway 29 offer scenic, winding routes with great lake views, and traffic is light most of the year. Watch for deer on rural roads at dawn and dusk, and expect slower speeds on grades near Mount Konocti. Summer weekends bring boaters and festival traffic, so arriving midweek or in the morning makes for an easier drive. Check Caltrans QuickMap for real-time road conditions, especially in winter when mountain routes can see rain or occasional snow.
